23.01.2022 Collaborators DE IV Photographer Rex Boggs, Printmaker Amanda Lawrence Theme: Sea Urchins... Amanda has long time loved collecting sea urchins of all colours and sizes and incorporating them into her printmaking works, one of the most recent was in the 2018 Capricornia Printmakers annual exhibition, ‘Singularity’. When Rex visited Amanda at her home in Keppel Sands last December to chat about their Double Exposure topic, Rex was immediately aware of her passion for sea creatures, and for sea urchins in particular. They were everywhere in her house! So they immediately decided to make that their topic. In January Rex visited again, and Amanda’s husband kindly took them across the creek in his tinny so they could explore one of Amanda’s favourite beaches. Rex took some remarkable photos away from that excursion and these will be included in their final artwork. Amanda has spent at least 18 solid hours of carving her lino plate, sneaking time in between everyday jobs, and will have an amazing print for visitors to the exhibition to view! 22.01.2022 Collaborators DE IV Photographer Sue Kraatz & Printmaker Linda Douglas Theme: The Owl and the Pussycat Almost 150 years ago Edward Lear published his much loved nonsense poem, The Owl and the Pussycat. It’s an unlikely tale about love between these two animals and their friends, a pig and a turkey, who assist them to get married. This very popular poem has inspired many artists over the years to create in their own art form around this story, it never grows old. This y...ear Lu Douglas, who’s preference for strong graphic marks on paper is so easily executed with lino prints, and Sue Kraatz, who is a photographer that has an amazing talent for composite photographs, have created their interpretations of this magical event for Double Exposure IV. #theowlandthepussycat #linoprints #compositephotographs Sue Kraatz Linda Douglas See more

18.01.2022 Michelle Black has been working on three prints for the upcoming "Double Exposure III" exhibition which opens next Thursday in Rockhampton. Teaming up with Peta Lloyd (fellow printmaker) and Sean Biddulph (photographer) they have created small vignette style images of the details in luxurious train travel from a previous era... a time when the smell of leather, wood varnish and cigars was THE smell of rail travel. QR 434, the General Manager's Car was built 1903 at the North... Ipswich Workshops. The car was originally #360 and was converted to the Central Division General Manager's car #434 in 1929 or 1930. With an observation platform on one end, #434 usually ran as the last car on the train and was used on inspection trips throughout the region. To provide greater flexibility for the GM, the car was often accompanied by a rail motor car traveling in a special FMG wagon (with ramp). A rail motor driver and cook would accompany the GM and his party, but the cook would remain with the carriages to prepare meals, do the cleaning and make beds. (Source: http://qldrailheritage.com/). You can find Car 434 at the Archer Park Rail Museum in Rockhampton. Michelle chose to work with polyester lithography, using litho crayons and chinagraph pencils to create grungy, smudgy images suited to the vintage aesthetic of the prints (more due to inexperience than good practice!). Usually a linoprint artist, Michelle has been experimenting with new techniques this year: things learned with this process - the wet plates dry out very quickly (too quickly) in the oppressive heat we were recently having, rendering the plate useless before she had finished the print run ; using crayons to draw is quite a challenge when Michelle is used to the precision and crisp lines of linocut; and fingerprints seem to appear from nowhere on pronto plates! Michelle is currently in Victoria at The Baldessin Press at a mokulito workshop (wood lithography) with tutor Barbie Kjar. Michelle would like to thank the Livingstone Shire Council and Arts Queensland for their support for local artists to attend professional development workshops through the Regional Arts Development Fund. Join Michelle at the launch of Double Exposure III | A collaborative exhibition this Thursday 1 March at 5:30, The Kern Arcade on East Street, Rockhampton.

16.01.2022 Simon Cox, photographer, is a traveller of many beautiful places. He and his printmaker collaborator Nora Hanasy decided these images would be fantastic to explore through drypoint etching and possibly collaged layers of etchings. The images are from Antelope Canyon, a slot canyon of Arizona. Nora has created a drypoint etching - using a sharp tool to scratch into the surface of a hard material. Ink is then wiped into the plate and is caught in the burrs created by the scrat...ching and is then transferred to paper under pressure in an etching press. She has framed the work in a box frame with a red light behind that glows through the artwork, much like the natural sunlight glowing in the canyon. Nora is an artist and art teacher who works with a wide variety of materials. She enjoys printmaking and her works often get cut up and rearranged into collages and multi-media pieces. In this exhibition she explored monoprinting and dry point etching in response to the photographic works.

16.01.2022 Literally can’t wait to see all works tonight!

16.01.2022 ‘Doing Different’ by combining techniques has become something of a trademark for Peta, The challenge and excitement of combining techniques, for example; printmaking and encaustic, stitch and print etc, allows me to experiment and think outside the box, it also keeps my mind open to new ways of expressing my creativity, new ideas and also the serendipity of happy accidents - Peta About collaborations, Peta notes that: Collaborating with Michelle and Sean is always stimula...ting and joyful, it’s also challenging and supportive and something that I thoroughly enjoy! Be sure to come along to the launch of the third Double Exposure exhibition so you can meet Peta, Sean and Michelle and all of the printmaker/photographer collaborators from the Capricornia Printmakers Inc. and the Rockhampton Photography Club. The exhibition opens on Thursday 1 March at 5:30pm in the Kern Arcade on East Street, Rockhampton. Many thanks to the Cooper family and the Rockhampton Regional Council for providing the 'For Lease' exhibition space to local artists.

15.01.2022 Meet Nan and Fran. Nanette Balchin loves to collaborate with other artists and to see what evolves as the collaboration happens. Collaborations create surprising results as you work outside of your comfort zone and find different ways to resolve printmaking challenges. Other artists motivate you reward you keep you on your toes and it’s just great fun to play together. 2018 is the year for Nanette to truly spend a lot of time in her studio and to develop new processes and e...xciting ways to work. Working with Fran is project number one for the year. Photography has been an interest of Fran McFadzen’s as a hobby since high school; documenting family, holidays and travel. In retirement, she indulged herself more, joining two local, one national and one international photography group to increase her learning and skill. She is an Accredited Judge of the Photographic Society of Queensland. Nanette and Fran explored possible subjects that would suit both artists, settling eventually on organic leafy vegetation and reflections. They selected a single photograph of a pool Fran took in Carnarvon National Park. It consists of plants, rocks and water which are, reading from left to right, over, under and on the pool. Nanette and Fran loved the way this image was complex, intriguing and a little confusing. Nanette tried to discover a way to capture the multiple layers within the pond image: not just rocks and leaves but the ripples and reflections which created a puzzling confusion of what was real and what was a reflection or distortion. She loved the way the ripples created a contrast of light and dark, of pattern and movement yet still evoked a feeling of quiet calm and introspection. Through layered gelatine plate monoprinting Nanette evoked the leaf forms and patterns but the ripples layer was created by a relief print using Ezy carve plate. The interplay of negative and positive forms matches the rocks, leaves and ripples. Each print captures a sense of the mood and layers within the pond and collectively they tell the story created by Fran’s Over Under On photograph. We'd love you to meet Nan and Fran at the opening of Double Exposure III | A collaborative exhibition - a collaboration between printmakers and photographers of the Capricornia Printmakers Inc. and Rockhampton Photography Club. Opens Thursday 1 March, 5:30pm at the Kern Arcade, East Street Rockhampton. Light refreshments will be available, so pop in after work! Exhibition continues until 25 March.

14.01.2022 Meet Shane Westley. Shane has been with the Rockhampton Photography Club for 4 years and dabbles in a bit of everything photo (except drones! humbug) Panoramas give a different feel to a photo so I wanted to capture the heritage street scape in a clean crisp image without the clutter of cars and people to be able to see the buildings as the main characters in a long parade of history. This panorama resulted from stitching together 9 individual photos to produce a shot of t...he street that runs from end to end. A tiny snippet of Shane's large panorama is below. Shane has teamed up with Capricornia Printmakers Inc. president Phillipa Sturgess for this year's Double Exposure III | A collaborative exhibition. Phillipa will be combining handprinting and digital image techniques by creating customised stencils from Shane Westley’s original digital image of a Rockhampton streetscape. These stencils are then used to build a manually produced monoprint. We can't wait to see the work from both of these talented artists! Please come along to meet Shane and Phillipa at the launch of the 2018 Double Exposure Exhibition - where printmakers and photographers work together to create outstanding artworks, many with a local flavour! Thursday 1 March, 5:30pm-7pm "For Lease" Exhibition Space The Kern Arcade, East Street Rockhampton With many thanks to the Cooper Family and the Rockhampton Regional Council for providing this wonderful space to local artists.

Exhibition continues until Sunday 25 March.

13.01.2022 Collaborators DE IV Photographer Simon Cox, Printmaker Nora Hanasy Theme: Peacock Feathers... Along with Simon Cox, Nora Hanasy went to Cooberrie Park and there Simon took photographs of the animals in particular focusing on birds. Simon chose the peacock as his muse. Together, Simon And Nora had some mono printing fun in Nora’s art room printing peacock feathers, these will be fashioned into bookmarks and sold to raise money for Cooberrie Park. The peacock is a hard animal to be original with as it is such a revered bird in so many cultures and peacock art is everywhere so Nora decided to stay true to herself and go down the assemblage path. She printed peacock feathers on an old broken wooden fan that had been taken apart. As Simon flipped the peacock in his photo playing with symmetry, Nora decided to create a symmetrical mandala piece to complement. There will also be a drypoint etching of a mandala which Nora will print as a whole, but will be cutting up the etching plate and including it in the assemblage work. Cant wait to see these creations! Nora Hanasy Cheers Nora Hanasy Simon Cox - Photographer Cooberrie Park Wildlife Sanctuary #peacock #feathers #cooberriepark

11.01.2022 Meet Sean Biddulph. Sean is a photographer whom explores photographic work across most photography genres. During 2018, he has been exploring angles and hidden spots to the local inner city, while also starting to explore some of the older photographic printing techniques, in order to push his artwork beyond the world of digital print alone. ... His first foray into alternative photographic prints will feature in this third Double Exposure exhibition. You'll see his work in a three-way collaboration with printmakers Peta Lloyd and Michelle Black. Join Sean, Peta and Michelle at the launch of Double Exposure III | A collaborative exhibition this Thursday 1 March at 5:30pm at the Kern Arcade, East Street Rockhampton.

11.01.2022 Collaborators DE IV Photographer Des Dunn Printmaker Clare Ford Theme: Eastern Curlew, Endangered Migratory Birds... Migratory shorebirds are our most endangered group of birds. Every year they migrate from the shores of Australia and New Zealand to their breeding grounds above the arctic circle in Siberia and Alaska. The remarkable annual circuit that they fly is called the East Asian-Australasian Flyway and it passes through 23 countries. There is a national awareness project The Overwintering Project - focusing and bringing attention to the rapidly decreasing habitat of migratory shorebirds birds. 11.01.2022 Meet Sally North and Aileen Hubbard. Sally and Aileen have challenged themselves for the third Double Exposure exhibition and are encouraging each other as they both experiment and play with printmaking that they have not done before. Sally (Rockhampton Photography Club member) has been enjoying linocut and produced some lovely and different prints while Aileen (Capricornia Printmakers Inc. member)has been experimenting with chrysotype, a very old and lost art of printing wi...th negatives in a dark room. Yep, they've swapped roles in this collaboration, with printmaker using a photographic process and photographer doing a linoprint! How cool is that right? Both types of prints have been produced using the same photographs and from the look of these sneak peeks, somebody has been to Paris... sigh. Come along to the launch of Double Exposure III | A collaborative exhibition THIS THURSDAY 1 March at the 'For Lease' space at The Kern Arcade, right next to Coopers on East Street Rockhampton so you can meet Sally and Aileen and learn more about this fabulous teamwork! 10.01.2022 Triple Treat for Double Exposure IV - First Treat - PETA LLOYD, Printmaker Theme : 'Flatlay and Beyond' Aileen Hubbard - printmaker and Sally North photographer and printmaker, are the two amazing artists that I’m working with for the Double Exposure exhibition this year. We all got together way back in January to toss ideas around, I presented a seed of an idea and now that seed is blooming! ... My idea came out of a fascination I had with the ‘flatlay’ photos I saw appearing on Instagram and Facebook. I loved the way a collection of objects could be arranged and photographed to create a story and a mood, suggest a theme or to promote a product. As an assemblage artist I have a wonderful range of found objects or omnium gatherum’s a noun: - for a ‘miscellaneous collection’. At the end of 2018 I challenged myself to make flatlay arrangements from my omnium gatherum’s every few days, I did this as a fun warm up activity, in much the same way I’d use a quick collage or drawing, I found creating and photographing my flatlays quite inspirational and enjoyable. At our initial brainstorming meeting, Sally, Aileen and I were all interested in pushing the flatlay photography idea further to include a printmaking aspect, which led to the idea of producing a collagraph plate from a flatlay photo. As well, we decided to include a third aspect, to produce a cyanotype print from the negative of the flatlay photo. But wait there’s morebut you’ll have to wait until the exhibition is installed to see just what else we’ve been working on!! Three people, three pieces of worka triple treat indeed! 09.01.2022 Collaborators DE IV Photographer Jade Baker, Printmaker Belinda McGrath Theme: Urban Ballet Jade’s interest in dance and movement are the basis of this collaboration, Jade loves the graceful and elegant elements of dance put with diverse environments that either compliment or contrast with it. This artwork showcases the contrasts: the delicate ethereal ballerina and the gritty urban landscape, the intricate deliberateness of lacework and the rebellious flash of graffiti and Belinda expertly brings in the contrast of the mediums - photography and relief printing, all presented in the one beautiful artwork.

08.01.2022 This is the third time that Sue Kraatz (photographer) and Linda Douglas (printmaker) have collaborated in the Double Exposure exhibition and they haven't failed to impress again. In the 1970’s Sue painted a series of clowns to help finance her trip to the United Kingdom so when Lu suggested they produce works on the theme of The SuLu Circus, clowns immediately came to mind. This, along with the knowledge that a friend who had been working as a clown for Cirque du Soleil w...as coming back to Australia the same time that she would be in Melbourne was just a perfect photo opportunity waiting to happen. Sue and Lu both love colour and action and there is plenty to be found in their work. Please drop in to the Double Exposure :: Printmaker Photographer :: Photographer Printmaker exhibition in the 'For Lease' exhibition space in The Kern Arcade - East Street Rockhampton. We are open Wednesday-Friday, 10am-2pm Saturdays 9am-12pm Sundays 7am-1pm until 25 March. 08.01.2022 Triple Treat for Double Exposure IV - Third Treat SALLY NORTH, Photographer & Printmaker Theme : 'Flatlay and Beyond' Sally decided to explore the Flatlay theme with her travels visiting with family who live at coastal locations. On all her beach visits she managed to find a few different and colourful shells to take home, theses shells reminded her of these visits and the wonderful memories of family they created. Recently exploring cyanotype printing with the Capricornia ...Printmakers group, Sally decided to try ‘toning’ these blue cyanotypes, creating different sepia tones with tea and coffee! 07.01.2022 Meet Sue Kraatz. In the 1970’s Sue painted a series of clowns to help finance her trip to the United Kingdom so when Lu (Linda Douglas, printmaker) suggested they produce works on the theme of The SuLu Circus (see what they did there? Su, Lu, very funny!), clowns immediately came to mind. This, along with the knowledge that a friend who had been working as a clown for Cirque du Soleil was coming back to Australia the same time that she would be in Melbourne was just a perfe...ct photo opportunity waiting to happen. Sue and Linda have teamed up once again to create some vibrant and fun works - Sue a composite photo (these snaps are edited, masked and combined to create what looks to be the most fun you can have in an old carriage! and Linda with works in linoprint to create an artist book. Meet Sue and Lu at the opening of Double Exposure III | A collaborative exhibition by the Capricornia Printmakers Inc. and the Rockhampton Photography Club. The exhibition opens Thursday 1 March at 5:30pm at The Kern Arcade, East Street Rockhampton and continues until 25 September. We look forward to seeing you at this very popular and very creative exhibition - pop in for an after-work drink and chat with the artists!

07.01.2022 Meet Phillipa Sturgess. Phillipa has recently taken up printmaking and particularly enjoys exploring the combination of different printing techniques. These stencils will then be used to build a manually monoprint. ... Phillipa is the president of the Capricornia Printmakers Inc. and you'll find her being the hostess with the mostess with a welcoming address at the launch of Double Exposure III | A collaborative exhibition. Join Phillipa and Shane at the launch of the 2018 Double Exposure exhibition on Thursday 1 March at 5:30pm in the Kern Arcade, East Street Rockhampton - right next to Coopers Rockhampton.

07.01.2022 Collaborators DE IV Photographer & Printmaker Sue Dunne and Clare Ford Sue, a member of the Rockhampton Photography Club has stepped into printmakers shoes in the Double Exposure IV adventure! Sue is trying her hand at lino printing this year and she loves it! Sue’s inspiration for this year’s Double Exposure art works is the way that Rocky’s tropical climate transforms and weathers the local ‘Queenslander’ houses over time, inspired by the peeling paint, wonky walls, and... rusty roofs of some of the dilapidated houses around our Rocky area. Clare Ford, talented local printmaker well known for her exquisite lino prints, has transposed these ideas into prints on recycled denim, from which she will be making a piece of ‘wearable art’. #wearableart #peelingpaint #linoprint #doubleexposure See more

07.01.2022 Choo choo! Printmakers Peta Lloyd, Ink & Baren: Michelle Black Printmaker and photographer Sean Biddulph have teamed up in this year's Double Exposure exhibition to present a study of some of the details of Car 434 - the General Manager for the Rockhampton area for Queensland Rail. The artists present nine small vignettes conjuring up some of the finer details of luxurious train travel in the early 1900’s. ... The smell of leather, wood varnish and cigar smoke, mingle with the sounds of humming electric fans and the click-clack of the wheels of the QR434. This was the era of fancy brass luggage racks, mechanical control fan switches and a separate gate entrance for first class passengers. Sean has used the very old photographic print technique of cyanotype with tannin to tone the photographic images, Michelle has used (for the first time in her year of experiments in printmaking) lithographic crayons and chinagraph pencils to create polyester plate lithographs and Peta has used beautifully created hand coloured paper drypoint and collagraph prints on rusted papers, finished with encaustic wax. All works are for sale individually. You can find this beautifully appointed vintage rail car at the Archer Park Rail Museum in Rockhampton. Well worth an hour or two to explore our early rail and tram history! Go check it out. The exhibition continues until 25 March at The Kern Arcade in East Street, Rockhampton. Opening hours | Wednesday to Friday, 10am - 2pm Saturdays 9am-12pm Sundays 7am-1pm

03.01.2022 Collaborators DE IV Photographer Scott Reynolds Printmaker Sally North Theme: Exploring Cyanotype with digital negatives... Going along with the Double Exposure motif, Scott and Sally thought about how that could relate into transforming the wonderfully aged patina of the sandstone architecture around Rockhampton, and bring it back to life, recreated in cyanotype! Scott came up with a photo of a very appropriate old building that they worked on getting the ‘double exposure’ theme happening! Scott, never having seen how the cyanotype process worked, helped Sally in the whole production, from taking the photo to getting it installed onto the hanging medium! Come and see what that building is and how they transformed it!! The second DE work from Sally and Scott is based on one of Scott’s favourite photos of the Fitzroy River, and it has transmuted into an ethereal work in blue cyanotype! 03.01.2022 Collaborators DE IV Photographer Jenni McDonald, Printmaker Belinda McGrath Theme: Violacea Belinda, born and raised in Rockhampton is a local printmaker and art teacher. She predominantly works with lino printing and favours bright colours and graphic imagery. The Yeppen Lagoon was the source of inspiration for this partnership as both artists live within walking distance. With so much beautiful imagery in the flora, fauna and reflected light on the water it was a difficult decision on what to produce. The water lily provided unique challenges to both Jenni and Belinda, with the petals filtering sunlight through their delicate layers.
