25.01.2022 Oh little new bub, dont scare me like that!

25.01.2022 Thank you to the vet students from UQ Gatton that spent the last week here at Double-H Alpacas. Amanda, James, and Zak were a pleasure to have around, and we covered a few alpaca and non-alpaca related activities during the week.

23.01.2022 Looks like the tooth fairy might be visiting this girl soon. I wonder what sort of payment alpacas get for their teeth. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

23.01.2022 Due to the issues last night when the alpaca entries were prematurely closed, entries will be now open until midnight tonight, Wednesday 19th Feb. To enter, go to https://www.toowoombashow.com.au/royal-show/schedule/

23.01.2022 Entries for the alpaca section of the Toowoomba Royal Show close on Wednesday at 5:00pm. Late entries will not be accepted. https://www.toowoombashow.com.au/royal-show/schedule/

23.01.2022 I always wondered what the floor under the hay was for.

22.01.2022 The sorghum got a bit high when we couldnt get stock up to it after the flood. Having 300 alpacas feeding in there now, it is an act of faith that they all come out each night.

22.01.2022 Almost 50km/hr winds weren't enough to stop this little girl from coming out to meet us. Luckily she was very strong and able to last a few hours in the current weather conditions until her maiden mum decided to let her suck.

21.01.2022 Do you think they would both be equally happy about this situation?

21.01.2022 Well at least she waited until the apparent temperature was around 6 degrees. What a day to have a baby! It is very strong, but the poor thing can hardly stand in that wind.

20.01.2022 The Toowoomba Royal Show will be on the 26th to 28th March, 2020, and will again have an alpaca fleece and a halter competition. AAA registered breeders are eligible to enter. Entries close on the 19th February at 5:00pm. No late entries accepted. This year, entries will be via the Queensland Shows online entry system, and not through eAlpaca. The schedule and the link to the online entry system can be found at:-... https://www.toowoombashow.com.au/royal-show/schedule/ See more

20.01.2022 372 days gestation and counting. This girl is huge, but does not seem in a hurry to show us what is inside that belly.

19.01.2022 There was a little excitement at the farm today. The girls all had their wagons in a circle. This was well after the main event, but they took a while to settle.

19.01.2022 Drenched little Crias , but they dont seem too worried. Our best fall of rain since almost 4 months before these guys were born.

17.01.2022 I'm very honoured to have just received this beauty to look after for a while - the Jo Wilson Memorial Trophy for Queensland Huacaya Alpaca of the Year. Chic and Jo Wilson were great supporters of the Qld region around the turn of the century, and this trophy was donated by Jo, and later dedicated to her memory after she passed away in 2001. This award was one of many that Double-H Sweet Vera won last year in a very successful show season for our stud.

16.01.2022 I love the look of this cria after shearing. He reminds me of a palomino horse with the lighter colour on the head and tail. Because he is not weaning age yet, we leave the head and tail unshorn so that the mother will recognize him. They recognize each other primarily by appearance, but when they have been shorn, they look totally different so then the smell becomes important. The head and tail are the areas that the mother will smell to check it is her cria.

15.01.2022 Were on a roll! Two black girls in two days. I hope this means a change in the weather coming too.

14.01.2022 A cooler change came through late yesterday, so I coated up this old girl, as she is struggling to get herself up in the mornings at the moment. It stayed on her all night, and she ran away when I tried to take it off this morning, so I guess she likes it. I might have to go to 2 bags when it gets really cold.

14.01.2022 All stocked up to get us through what is looking like another hot, dry spring. Now to start looking for summer feed.

13.01.2022 The cria are so cute with their fluffy tails and heads, and it’s amazing how different the fleece colour can be underneath from what you see on the inside. This one is actually a nice, even, dark grey colour, which I was not expecting.

13.01.2022 Gerard seems to have some freeloaders this morning. Maybe his wool is keeping their feet warm from the cold wind.

13.01.2022 Maleny Alpaca Show brought out the wet weather on the weekend, but the show went on. Double-H Lewis had a great show, winning supreme brown alpaca, Best in Show Huacaya, as well as supreme brown fleece. My other entries all did pretty well also. With strawberries as prizes for Champions and cheeses for supremes, I am going to be rolling when you next see me. They are yummy though. Thanks Jeff and Jill for putting on this great little show. Thanks also to all the people who helped me both in and out of the ring.

13.01.2022 Yesterday must have been Take your breakfast to the shearing table Thursday. Some alpacas have such huge personalities.

12.01.2022 The hot weather has started, and, so it seems, has the animals getting stuck in the water troughs. I've had to help both a calf and a cria out of troughs this week.

10.01.2022 What a horrible day to be born! This was cria number 2 for the day, and a couple of hours near the heater and getting a blow dry with the hair dryer has him looking alive finally. Now to get him onto mum.

10.01.2022 Just a girl and her favourite stick. I wonder if I can teach her to fetch it.

10.01.2022 Finally, our first female cria for the year, and a solid black one to boot. Life is good!

09.01.2022 Its nice to get hold of some freshly baled, green hay to feed the herd. They were looking contented by the end of the day, which doesnt happen very much at the moment.

09.01.2022 These guards were around many of the trees here when we bought the property, because the previous owner had goats. Maybe removing them needs to go up my priority list.

09.01.2022 A nice frosty -4 when I looked at 7am, but yesterdays new arrivals have taken it in their stride so far.

09.01.2022 There is nothing better than being sent a photo like this the morning after I've delivered alpacas to their new home. These wethers have found the water, are exploring their new shed, are eating, and look relaxed. I appreciate all feedback from people I sell to, but pics like this are very pleasing to see. I feel confident that these boys are super lucky and have found a great home.

08.01.2022 Almost every day, a video comes across my Facebook feed of an adorable baby alpaca in someones house or going for a walk in a neighborhood. These cute videos a...re going viral, and are starting a dangerous trend of everyone wanting to cuddle an alpaca or getting one as a "pet". Let me share my story with you. We had our first cria, Popcorn, born on our farm 5 years ago. I was determined to be his "person," and I succeeded. Popcorn imprinted on me and we were inseparable. Fast forward to a few years later, Popcorn started exhibiting dangerous behaviors, such as jumping up and ramming into me. After consulting our vet, we learned that Popcorn was showing signs of Beserk Male Syndrome. This happens when camelids (alpacas, llamas, camels) imprint on humans and considers them a fellow alpaca to dominate. This is also known as Aberrant Behavior Syndrome as it can also happen with Females! Popcorn has almost broken my ribs several times and has injured other family members and friends. No amount of training or discipline will ever truly "fix" him. PLEASE, THINK TWICE BEFORE SHARING THESE VIDEOS. I know they are cute and make your heart happy, but it is NOT normal or healthy to have alpacas as house pets or cuddle buddies. It is just starting a dangerous trend that will result in aggressive behaviors in these animals. They are also causing people to go out and purchase an alpaca as a "house pet", which would create a very depressed and even sick animal, as they are herd animals and should not be alone! PLEASE SHARE TO SPREAD THE WORD!

08.01.2022 It was a wee bit windy here today with gusts up to 83km/hr, apparently. Luckily the alpacas I had in the yards managed to dodge this good size branch.

08.01.2022 A nice frosty -4 when I looked at 7am, but yesterday’s new arrivals have taken it in their stride so far.

07.01.2022 A little black boy for this old girl today. At 17 yrs old, she is going to struggle a little in the dry conditions, but she is an old hand at this baby business, having had 10 babies while I have had her (I didnt own her for a few years).

07.01.2022 Trying to do a baby check after rain. Is that the grey girl that is due, or is she just covered in mud? Its a bit hard to tell at the moment.

06.01.2022 Always fun when they decide to dress up for shearing.

06.01.2022 Im very honoured to have just received this beauty to look after for a while - the Jo Wilson Memorial Trophy for Queensland Huacaya Alpaca of the Year. Chic and Jo Wilson were great supporters of the Qld region around the turn of the century, and this trophy was donated by Jo, and later dedicated to her memory after she passed away in 2001. This award was one of many that Double-H Sweet Vera won last year in a very successful show season for our stud.

04.01.2022 A new paddock has all the heads down. Not sure what they are finding to eat, but they seem happy for now.

04.01.2022 My belly is feeling a little lopsided today.

04.01.2022 I think Squirt's baby might be a little bit blacker than she is. Interestingly, her last cria from the same mating was a spectacular grey girl. Every year is an adventure to see what will come out.

04.01.2022 The first baby has hit the ground. A lovely strong, healthy male to start off the cria drop.

04.01.2022 Almost 50km/hr winds werent enough to stop this little girl from coming out to meet us. Luckily she was very strong and able to last a few hours in the current weather conditions until her maiden mum decided to let her suck.

03.01.2022 There are some in every species that just like to be the centre of attention.

03.01.2022 Shearing has started, but it was getting a little crowded in the shed for a while yesterday. One cria belongs to the girl being shorn.

02.01.2022 Pretty excited to be awarded 1st, 2nd and tied for 3rd place in the Alpaca of the State for Queensland. 1st place with Double-H Sweet Vera Runner-up with Double-H Blacky 3rd place with Double-H Gold Lass... Congratulations to Nicole Read whose animal Ivory Park Jasper tied with Gold Lass for third place.

01.01.2022 One of my local vets getting up and personal with a bull. I often see posts where people say they dont have a vet close by who knows anything about alpacas, but a vet who has experience with other livestock can usually use their knowledge to help with the alpacas. A good relationship with your local vet is very important because, even if you have the healthiest herd there ever was, sooner or later one will get sick, or injure itself.

01.01.2022 The latest cria showing me its got this baby business sorted. Another boy, but strong and healthy.
