25.01.2022 The Year One children have begun our Monday ‘Hearts and Minds’ critical and creative thinking program with Mrs. Birch. This is based on the British ‘P4C’ Philosophy for Children program, Harvard University Project Zero ‘Artful Thinking’ Program and Emeritus Professor Art Costa’s ‘Habits of Mind’ thinking strategies... as well as some mindfulness and calming games thrown in for good measure! This week we looked at Social Distancing in art. The children talked about how clo...se was too close, about ‘family bubbles’ and whether cows and crows have to socially distance. We read ‘Slow Down World’ by Tai Snaith and talked about the calm, quiet painting that is ‘The Arbour’ by Australian artist Emanuel Phillips Fox. The children thought and talked about calm things. Afterwards, they tried really hard to think about something stressful but then change their thoughts to something fun. Learning to be aware of their thoughts. They all did a fabulous job. Throughout the lessons they had lots to say and had many creative ideas and interesting thoughts. Great beginnings little Artful Thinkers! Here are some of the paintings that we looked slowly at. Your child might like to talk about the paintings with you. Who is and isn't socially distancing and who might be in a 'family bubble"? This can be quite subjective and you may not agree with your child. Encourage them to give evidence for their reasoning because in art and philosophy there may not always be a 'right' answer. 19.01.2022 Day 5 Early Learning Matters The week has come to an end with a bang, our students have spent time in the gymnasium this afternoon. Our Year 1 teachers have set up a wonderful play based learning environment where opportunities are provided for our children to actively and imaginatively engage with each other, objects and the environment. This week has been about celebrating our early learning. Every day matters and our dedicated staff work hard to ensure our students are well catered for. #earlylearningmatters

14.01.2022 This week in Kindy Red we continued to develop our creative and flexible thinking (as well as our phonics!) when we talked about ‘t’ for treehouse. We looked at a special picture made by 83 year old British artist and national treasure David Hockney on his iPad during lockdown in Normandy, 2020. He released some of his 'spring awakenings' drawings as "respite for people from the news and what is going on". We looked at, thought about and talked a lot about what we would like... a treehouse to have if we designed one. How else could we get up to it instead of using a ladder? Rocket boosters, helicopters, trampolines and clouds of course! How could we get down? What would grow on the branches? Who would we like to have in our treehouse with us? Why? What fun things would we like to put on platforms on the branches? We began thinking about our thinking (metacognition) by wondering why we would like these things. After much thought and discussion it seems in Kindy Red, a hot tub, a roof garden and blocks are prerequisites for a well designed treehouse! Maybe an opportunity for some flexible and creative thinking for children of all ages on a rainy weekend? See more
