When not at work Luna can be found running on the beach , napping on the couch and generally getting into mischief!

17.01.2022 We all love the cute puppies but from time to time Council comes across some pretty sad tales too Back in February Council met Charlie who's owner had sadly passed away Charlie had led a sedentary life and had a body shape resembling a coffee table........ The team at RSPCA Cairns shelter where able to help Charlie through his grief, put him on a much needed diet and found him a new companion to live out his days with.

17.01.2022 Holly is still waiting for her owner to come forward. We have no idea why she is still waiting as this little girl is an absolute delight! Watch this space for rehoming details if she goes unclaimed.....

15.01.2022 Back at the start of the year we had a gorgeous pigeon pair of Catahoula X puppies surrendered to council. They were re homed by the fabulous Rags to Riches. Council staff named the little girl 'Bat Ears' for obvious reasons! Within 24 hours of arriving at Rags to Riches Bat Ears had found her new home with the vet nurse who cared for her. ... As you can see Bat Ears now Miro has finally grown into those ears! She has a doggy and kitty sibling and even gets to come to work with Mum and help with all the new animals coming into care! Merry Christmas Miro!

After a bit of TLC Killer was re-homed through the fantastic team Yaps.... Killer has now joined a beautiful family and has a Golden Retriever sibling. Killer has lived up to her name and enjoys a fun game of bitey bite face!

11.01.2022 Woo Hoo! Only 14 sleeps till Christmas! We hope Santa remembers all the good dogs too such as the lovely Delilah. Delilah came into care with her brother Tex who we introduced on December 1... Delilah was very timid and withdrawn but with the help of the dedicated volunteers at North Qld Animal Rescue Inc. and a devoted owner she has settled in well and is now a much loved pet who enjoys a comfy bed and a good chew toy!

11.01.2022 The pound pups are enjoying the weekend and we hope you are too! Today pound dogs Max and Holly had a play date with staff pups Luna and Pablo. Happy weekend everyone

09.01.2022 When completing our Christmas count down there were a few heart warming tails that we were really keen to share but were hesitant to do so due to ongoing RSPCA investigations. The RSPCA do a huge amount of work in our region. They have the interests of both the animals and the people at heart and frequently provide guidance, education and instruction to remedy a situation and keep pets in their homes. Occasionally however there are instances of neglect or abuse t...hat require the removal of the animal and an investigation. In addition to the many healthy pets rehomed through RSPCA Cairns shelter this year they have also taken on one dog that had such bad mange and dry eye that the eye had to be removed, 2 dogs with untreated broken legs, one dog that had been left tied up for days with no sustenance and various other malnourished and neglected pets. Many of these dogs required surgery and extensive rehabilitation that the RSPCA and volunteers have provided, some of the pups are still receiving care from the RSPCA however most will be spending this Christmas in their forever homes. Thank you so much RSPCA Cairns shelter

08.01.2022 Next up in our Christmas countdown is Pablo! Pablo is not technically a Douglas Shire impound but he is a rescue dog and we wanted to share his story. Pablo was adopted through Greyhound Adoption Program QLD after running just one race before deciding life on the couch was more his speed.... Pablo now spends his day helping the Local Laws Team with K9 temperament assessments; between naps . Despite their size greyhounds are very chilled out low maintenance dogs and they make fantastic pets. If you are thinking of adopting a greyhound please contact Greyhound Adoption Program QLD

08.01.2022 To help finish off the year we have delved deep into the archives and want to share with you a rescue puss , who came from Paws and Claws Refuge and Boarding Centre - Port Douglas as a kitten, when the old shelter was open a few years ago. Chiko is the Queen of this household and loves nothing more than sleeping (on top of the sofa, in the linen cupboard) or guarding the Christmas tree. She helped the kids when they were home schooling this year and calls time wh...en a game of Monopoly is getting out of hand . Chiko is a much loved family member and proof that the bad name that black cats have is truly unwarranted. We can't wait to have the new Paws and Claws Refuge and Boarding Centre - Port Douglas shelter up and running, and continuing to do the good work they always have, in the Douglas Shire.

07.01.2022 When we received a large litter at the start of the year no single rescue could take them all! With the help of Rags to Riches and Yaps we were able to secure homes for all 8 Puppies. One pup from the litter was the lovely Rosie. ... As you can see Rosie is very happy , spoilt rotten and absolutely adored. Between photo shoots Rosie can be found at her Mum's side. Her new Mum described her as a great motivator who she adores and who loves her right back!

07.01.2022 With only 3 sleeps till Christmas we wanted to introduce you to the gorgeous Tilly and tell you her story. Tilly was found wandering on 4 Mile Beach by a member of our community. She immediately stole her rescuer's heart however her rescuer contacted Council to check for a microchip and to look for Tilly's owner. After a few days in the pound and after being advertised online no one had come forward to claim Tilly. ... Luckily for Tilly her rescuer was very keen to adopt her! @cairnsanimalrescue desexed, vaccinated and microchipped Tilly before reuniting her with her rescuer. Tilly is now living her best life with her Labrador sibling, her mini humans and a beautiful pool to relax in all summer.

05.01.2022 When council received a premature pup covered in ticks and full of worms we were in a bit of a fix. Council always puts the animals first and felt that the pup needed more care than we could supply at the pound. The kind staff at Coral Sea Vet Care came to our rescue and agreed to foster the pup Missy.... Missy is what we refer to as a foster fail. As soon as she was available for adoption the vet nurses who had cared for her immediately snapped her up. Missy's new Mum provided plenty of love , attention and a cosy home . She has grown from a tiny runt to a whopping 30kg!! Missy has the most beautiful, hilarious and sweet personality and loves going for car rides with her pawrents.

04.01.2022 PUPDATE The lovely Holly has not been claimed. She is now off to Cairns Animal Rescue Inc to find her forever home. If you have lots of energy , a big heart and a swimming pool please consider adopting this lovable water hound!!... Lost dog! This lovely young girl was found dodging cars in Craiglie. Fortunately for her she was rescued by a kind member of the public who contacted Council. Unfortunately she has no microchip or tag . If this is your pup please contact Council on 4099 9444

02.01.2022 When getting a pet there are a lot of things to consider, such as adequate fencing. Next up in our Christmas countdown is the adorable Wanda! Wanda's just wouldn’t stay home and was picked up 7 times in a 5 month period! ... Wanda could even find her own way to the pound and started turning up there waiting patiently for a pigs ear and cuddle! Eventually Wanda went unclaimed and was rehomed by the gorgeous people at @cairnsanimalrescue Wanda's new mum was so impressed with @cairnsanimal rescue that she went on to become a foster carer for them to help more pups like Wanda. Merry Christmas Wanda and family! xxx

01.01.2022 You may remember Rosie from an earlier post in our Christmas Countdown . Well next up we have Bella who was the runt from the same litter! Bella has received fabulous care after being re-homed by Rags to Riches and is now unrecognisable! Bella is spoilt rotten and can generally be found reclining on the couch or her mums bed! ... Her Mum has said she is pure joy and a total goofball who always keeps her pawrents amused with her antics.

01.01.2022 Taking on a puppy is a huge commitment. At this time of year we see a lot of people getting new pups and unfortunately come February we see a lot of those pups being surrendered to Council. If you are considering getting a pup please have a good think about your ability to take one on for its whole life. ... Back in October Council received these 2 gorgeous pups. The pups had been taken on by some young lads after they had been given to them in a very poor state. The pups new owners took great care of them but soon realised just how huge a responsibility 2 dogs can be. They did the right thing by the pups and surrendered them to Council. The pups were then transferred to @cairnsanimalrescue who completed all of their vet work and found them fabulous forever homes.
