24.01.2022 Most people’s concept of strength is wrong. They talk about strength in terms of movement or weight but what they are actually conveying is an expression of power... movement is power. But strength is the ability to hold, to be rigid and steadfast. In regards to movement it’s the ability to generate, maintain and exert tension. Your ability to create ideal body positions & hold them against external loads or changing body positions. That is strength, strength allows the abi...lity expression of power but they are not one in the same. While words are just words they do shape the context of our experiences, they are how we express knowledge. So language becomes the way in which we form thoughts, concepts and wisdom around a process and therefore these words become vital in our learning. If you are thinking about is the movement then you are short changing the process and missing out on the consideration of where and why your strength is breaking? This change in definition won’t fix that problem instantly but it will allow you to start conceptually thinking about it correctly & that’s the first step. I can’t point you in the right direction if you aren’t sure of where you stand currently.

23.01.2022 There are few things I enjoy more then a writing with good food, or in this case editing. Public speaking on the other hand frightens me but educating is something I love to do. With that I’m happy to be putting the final touches Seminar 4 of The Body Breakdown Series To The Core Of It All. Hoping to see as many of your faces at CrossFit HBZ tomorrow at 10am for a few hours sharing, learning and laughing together.

20.01.2022 Reasons I wouldn’t go Keto... Now this isn’t to say Keto can’t be an effective nutritional strategy & in some cases it is absolutely medically necessary but these are the reasons I don’t think right for me... PDH Flux or Metabolic Flexibility... Very simple put it is your ability to burn Carbohydrate when active and fatty acids during rest. Now if you want to move fast, heavy or both like I do then you’ll want to have this ability. Going keto tends to pull down this high output Carbohydrate powering function & isn’t the ideal fuel strategy for what most people want to achieve in the gym... To be muscular & fit right? IgF1 (insulin-like growth factor 1) & mTOR (mammalian target rampamycin) Lean body mass is a protection mechanism, there’s correlation between you Fat Free Body Mass Index (FFMI) & all causes of mortality. We have seen recent studies showing grip strength or push up ability (all muscle mass related abilities) are a protective mechanism against a vast amount of metabolic disorders or all cause mortality. Plus I don’t think the Spartans built many statues of runners so muscle mass is a must, for that carbs are a great allies! Donuts... or Hyper-palatable food! Carbs & Fat are delicious! You’re genetically engineered to seek, crave and consume this macronutrients combination. Avoiding them together is generally the hardest for general population to avoid & if we know the name of the game with nutrition is always adherence then why make it harder then it has to be? Oh did I mention donuts?! #crossfit #fitness #gym #workout #fit #training #fitnessmotivation #motivation #bodybuilding #wod #weightlifting #fitfam #sport #personaltrainer #crossfitgirls #lifestyle #gymlife #powerlifting #health #muscle #strength #o #yoga #strong #exercise #gymmotivation #instafit #crossfitgames #crossfitter #bhfyp

17.01.2022 Sleep is a nonnegotiable... "We’re teaching our players: Sleep is a weapon. Sam Ramsden, Dir. of Player Health and Performance, Seattle Seahawks... If you told an athlete you had a treatment that would reduce the chemicals associated with stress, that would naturally increase human growth hormone, that enhances recovery rate, that improves performance, they would all do it. Sleep does all of those things. Casey Smith, Head Athletic Trainer, Dallas Mavericks Sleep is the greatest legal performance enhancing drug that most people are neglecting in sport... if you’re getting 6 hours of sleep or less, your time to physical exhaustion drops by up to 30% Matthew Paul Walker- Professor Neuroscience If I can’t convince you of this then maybe these Jedi’s could...How many hours do you get a night?

16.01.2022 You need to eat LESS CALORIES, but eat MORE FOOD. No No that isn’t a mistake or an oxymoron... You need to eat a more nutrient-dense diet. ... You most likely need to eat more, but more volume of food that will in turn have less calories. This is an absolutely critical concept that need to be established in relation to food. You’re Satiety and maybe your sanity when dealing with nutrition depend upon it. Adding in exercise to your health plan? Well we know macronutrients (carbs, protein & fat) are for fuelling but recovery is a micronutrient (vitamins, minerals etc.) paradigm so again food quality becomes critical. So in essence quantity is our most valuable metric (calories in vs out) but the quality of that intake can be an absolute game changer. A little sample of what I ate yesterday minus snacks & well, a lot coffee...

15.01.2022 Hips or Core? What do I stabilize first? Glute firing & Glute function is mainstay of any lower limb rehabilitation conversations but rarely is it the entire picture. The core function implications to glute function are often an over looked but essential component. As we can see from the excerpt below; "The gluteus medius muscle, which contracts simultaneously with the external oblique abdominal muscle and the internal oblique abdominal muscle, is a postural muscle that is ne...cessary for stability." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3881464/ As to what comes first, the art there is choosing a exercise that will give you a compound effect of stability across both systems. They are designed as systems that work together and hence must be trained and rehabilitated as such. Don't forget we have the 15% first consult deal till the end of the year and Seminar 4 of the Body Breakdown Series on December the 14th!

13.01.2022 Welcome to 30 & Broken, we are live on instagram. Check out "30andbroken" for more tips and tricks to make move you move faster and more pain free! While this idea was conceived many moons ago I'm excited to finally launch 30 and Broken. The idea was simply, at 30 years old I found myself like many people have. Feeling slightly broken...years of rugby, years of lifting weights & life had taken its toll on my body but there was maybe 1 difference.... For many years now I had been part of a super successful clinical treatment team for a company called Airrosti in Austin, Texas. Airrosti has affiliations to CrossFit as a major sponsor & athlete service provider, The Dallas Cowboys, Houston Rockets amongst many large athletic organizations along with providing treatment for the everyday person from the street. As a leader of Airrosti's clinical development team I was also responsible for research and subsequent education of treatment teams. So now the aim is simple...pass the knowledge and skills I have used on myself & in clinic onto you! So no matter your age, athletic ability or level or sport/recreation we can all become a little less broken together! Stay tuned for a bunch of useful information. I'm looking forward to this journey with you!

13.01.2022 The Bunkie Test is a functional performance test consisting of 5 test positions that can be used to assess aspects of muscular function. It provides a handy insight into how different myofascial tracks of the body are working or not working and whether dysfunction exists bilaterally. Wanna know how it works & how you stack up? Join us this Saturday @ 10am for "The Core of it All" at CrossFit HBZ for a detailed look at what the core is & what it's real function is!... $90 on the day, transfer details available if you message me or send me an email for more info [email protected]

12.01.2022 The 95% percentiles - Attacking the low hanging fruit. These are most over looked but generally can have the biggest impact on achieving your goals! ...Nutrition + hydration, Sleep, NEAT (Non-exercise activity thermogenesis) & Exercise... In that order 95% of your health is dictated in by how you pay attention to these simple factors. It’s really quite simple, but that doesn’t make it easy.... ... It requires focus and attention, that’s the first and the most import aspect. If you want to live longer, be fitter and stronger, healthier and happier these factors most likely hold the key. Now these factors require some juggling, often some sliding & a good bit of give and take cause I can hear the mothers now sleep ha! what is that?!... That’s where a little tinkering and some influence by someone with experience can make all the difference. Need to loose the weight but sleep time is limited? Well then we know we have to adjust your NEAT output way up, cut down on high intensity work to focus on building a little lean body mass & find a nutritional strategy that’s allows flexibility while hitting enough of the principal factors to provide the success you want. These ducks don’t always need to be exactly in a row, but you need to know how to move them in the right direction. Quack Quack on friends!

09.01.2022 A huge thanks to those who came out yesterday for Seminar 4. It’s always hugely humbling to have people invest their time and finances to come learn from you, so I am greatly appreciative to those who provide me the chance to educate. Next month we’ll dig into the lower extremity, knees, hamstrings, ankles and so much more. Stay tuned for an exact date!

04.01.2022 The Kieran O'sullivan test is one of the most important tests we have. It tell’s us nothing about muscles, nerves or injury mechanism but can greatly shape a patient’s injury resolution. "Ask your patient to describe how they will explain your consultation findings to their family & significant other, when they get home" As with many of the tasks we undertake physically knowing the "why" can greatly shape our outcome. Educating a patient with an approach they can understand w...ill greatly improve compliance which is a must for injury resolution. This as you can imagine results in a better all round experience for the patient & the provider. Do you speak in a way everyone can understand?
