24.01.2022 What a fun experience to be interviewed on abc radio last night! https://www.abc.net.au//programs/evenings/evenings/11887892 (Segment starts at 1:28)... #abcradiomelbourne #abcradio #eveningswithdavidastle #embracewomenshealth #cabrinihealth #jessiemcphersonprivatehospital #drdaniellequittner #monashwomens #monashhealth

23.01.2022 If there’s one good reason to leave the house it’s this... getting the family immunised! I strongly encourage all my pregnant patients to have the fluvax. Influenza (the flu) can be a serious disease, especially when you are pregnant. If you get the flu during pregnancy, you are at much higher risk than other adults of complications. Immunisation not only protects you but also your baby. Babies under 6 months are at high risk of serious complications if they catch the virus. The best way to protect your newborn baby against influenza is to get vaccinated during pregnancy. #fluvax #pregnancy #obstetrician #melbourneobstetrician #embracewomenshealth #drdaniellequittner #cabriniobstetrician #jessiemcphersonobstetrician #monashwomens

18.01.2022 Important heartburn medication update . Many pregnant women experience heartburn or acid reflux and Ranitidine (often known as Zantac) is a safe an...d effective medication BUT some batches of this medication have been found to be contaminated by a substance called NDMA. . NDMA does occur in some foods especially those cooked, smoked or cured, however it is known to be a potential carcinogen. The cancer risk occurs with long-term exposure (over years) and not short term use. . Today the Therapeutic Goods Administration has issued a recall for Sandoz Raniditine. We advise all patients taking ranitidine in pregnancy to discuss the risks and benefits of continuing this therapy, as well as alternatives with their health care providers. Note that at the time of posting, the Zantac brand has not been recalled. There are also no concerns with antacids such as Gaviscon or Quikeze . #medicinesinpregnancy #medicines #medicinealert #prescribing #heartburn #heartburnrelief #gord #gerd #antacids #pregnancy #reflux #healthalert #tga #womenshealth See more

11.01.2022 A great visual on the value of movement during labour

10.01.2022 Great post from my lovely colleague!@drnatalieelphinstone. I see many woman with a real fear of giving birth. Why? I wonder if maybe it’s because birth is kept secret from us. It has now become ‘the great unknown’. No longer do we watch our mothers and sisters and cousins give birth in our midst and in our homes. No longer do we hustle about making sure we boil some water and grab some towels whilst they labour beside us. Birth is now done in private behind closed (hospit...al) doors. Many of us aren’t exposed to animal birth either. We don’t raise livestock and we get our pets from a pet shop! So where do we learn about what birth is like? It’s the movies right?! Birth in the movies follows a very strict pattern... woman unexpectedly breaks her waters in a public setting, she rushes to hospital getting increasingly agitated and there she screams out a baby whilst sweating profusely and shouting obscenities! It’s fast and furious and seems very unsettling. Or maybe our mothers and sisters and cousins do tell us the story of their birth - but there’s a heavy focus on the pain or fear or complication that happened. None of this is helping the expectant mother understand what birth is truly like. And I don’t think any one person can tell her. Birth takes a thousand different pathways. It looks different for everyone. It can be a quiet and serene acceptance, or it can be loud and powerful with its force. It can be slow or fast, messy or much more messy, in the water, in an operating theatre, on your back, on your knees, involving all the drugs, having no drugs, it is limitless in its manifestation. All this brings me to my motivation to try and share as many birth stories here as I can. It’s to educate and inform and demonstrate that every birth is incredible no matter what it looks like. And hopefully I can also show you that there’s no place for fear during this process, only love. If you would like to ‘donate’ your birth story to the cause please send me a message. I would love to include it! I’m using the hashtag #100birthstoriesin2020 so that it’s easy to get access to all the stories as a glance.

07.01.2022 To the superb midwives in my life, who I have had the privilege and pleasure to learn from, work with, laugh with, cry with. Knowing the fabulous team I would be working alongside was a huge inspiration in my decision to become an obstetrician. Happy International Midwives Day. When it comes to compassion, patience, dedication and love...you guys really deliver! xx
