23.01.2022 TETANUS VACCINATION From the number of questions about vaccination posted, and the number of confusing answers given by some of you, it appears that lots of people could not finish my essay on tetanus that I posted below and so did not get to the bit about vaccination. So I will copy and paste it for you: "All you need to do is give a course of tetanus vaccine called the Tetanus Toxoid. The usual course is two doses 3-4 weeks apart, often given as a 3-6 month old foal but ca...n be given at any age. Then a booster is required one year later and then a booster every 5 years or so. It is no longer recommended that a booster every year is required for tetanus vaccination. If this protocol is followed your horse will NEVER get tetanus. It is a 100% safe and effective vaccine with no serious side effects that I have ever seen or read about. Most breeding farms give a booster to all pregnant mares about a month before foaling and this is a good idea as it protects the mare from getting tetanus as a result of a foaling injury and it gives antibodies to the foal through the colostrum which will protect the foal during its first few months. If a horse gets a wound or injury that may result in tetanus and it is not known whether it has ever been vaccinated, the best approach is to give it both the antitoxin (which will protect the horse straight away) and a dose of the toxoid to start its vaccination course. If the horse has been given its full course of vaccinations and is known definitely to be "up to date", no booster is probably required, but if you want to be absolutely safe just give a toxoid booster."

23.01.2022 This post from 17th August, 2016: TETANUS IN HORSES Today I had to put to sleep a pony with tetanus. This is the second case I have seen in the last year or so. I usually only see a case every 5 years or so now. When I first graduated in the eighties and worked at the Uni we used to see several cases a year but I was working in a referral centre so we got sent a lot of cases by other practitioners....Continue reading

19.01.2022 ANIMAL RESCUE I #Werombi Just before 9am this morning our #RescuePumper and #TechnicalRescue along with Emergency Services were responded to #Werombi to reports... of a #horse stuck in a deep sink hole. Fire and Rescue NSW #Rescue crews arrived on scene quickly and developed an extrication plan. The #Technical Rescue from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 008 Liverpool provided large animal rescue equipment and after approximately 4 hours of careful and systematic operations the horse was slid gently to safety by #firefighters. The horse was transported to a local #Wollondilly animal hospital for treatment. 14.01.2022 FINALLY after 18 months (don’t ask!) the new truck is ready for the road! We have had countless false starts but I think we are finally ready. The old Hilux (HOSDOC) is having a well earned rest after 600,000 problem-free kms! The new Ram (HORSDR) is fuelled up and ready to roll so if you see me coming on the road: keep left!

13.01.2022 ANOTHER NUTRITION ANECDOTE. Last year Melinda and I visited Kentucky and were lucky enough to go to one of the great thoroughbred studs owned by Sheikh Mohammed. This is a place where some of the world’s most valuable stallions stand at stud. Every one of them is worth tens of millions of dollars and their service fees are in the tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars per service. The stallions were in absolutely magnificent condition with gleaming coats and health rad...iating from them. The stallion manager, who is an Australian friend of mine, took me to the feed shed and told me about their ration. He said when he took over the management of the stallions he went into the feed shed and there were two full shelves of every supplement known to God and man. He asked the general manager if he could throw them all out and simplify the nutrition of the stallions. He was a given permission to do whatever he thought best. So these magnificent horses are now fed a half a kilogram of a grain mix morning and night, beautiful pasture all day, and adlib grass hay all night. That’s it. I have never seen better looking specimens and it just blew me away how little they were fed in terms of carbs. So as someone said in response to my previous post keep it simple stupid! See more

12.01.2022 The University Hospital at Cobbitty is conducting a survey into owner's attitudes towards, and perceptions of, colic surgery. Below is a cut and paste of the email they sent me asking me to post it to this page. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey. Survey into owner knowledge and attitudes toward colic surgery Have you ever had to decide to refer a horse for colic surgery? Have you ever thought about what you would do if you had to make that choice at short not...ice? Staff at the Camden Equine Centre, University of Sydney are conducting a survey into owner knowledge and attitudes toward colic surgery. We are investigating if there are trends between the owner demographics and previous experience with colic, and whether owners elect to send horses for emergency surgery. This may help future veterinarians better understand how they can support horse owners whilst they make this difficult decision. This results from the survey will hopefully allow for better insights into the horse owners’ understanding of outcomes of colic surgery and lead to the development of better information resources for owners. The survey consists of about 20 questions and should only take about 20 minutes of your time. To complete the survey and to learn about a project, please go to: https://redcap.sydney.edu.au/surveys/?s=C8CMC4MXXL To learn more about the project and for a full participant information statement, please go to: https://colicsurvey.weebly.com/

10.01.2022 On a lighter note just to show the impact of technology on our lives: Melinda and I were just in our kitchen eating lunch and looking out the window. It was clearly drizzling but when I commented on it Mel checked on her phone and informed me that it wasn't raining! Clearly the app on her phone was more informed than my own eyes! Reminds me of one of my all-time favorite Leunig cartoons of a man and his son sitting on a lounge admiring a beautiful sunset on the TV while the same sunset was clearly visible out the lounge room window.

06.01.2022 Tetanus Again! Last weekend had to put to sleep a mare with tetanus (see video). Uncertain vaccination history and a recent foot abscess treated by farrier with no tetanus vaccine or antitoxin. Foot abscesses, infected hoof cracks and stone bruises are a great way to get tetanus and farriers that treat them either don't know this or forget to tell the owner to speak to their vet about tetanus prevention. Please pass this information onto your farrier! Tetanus spores are a...bundant in horse faeces and therefore, any soil where horses live. Soil and mud contaminates foot wounds and abscesses. The spores need an environment with little or no oxygen - like a crack or abscess under a horse's hoof wall or sole - and hence perfect conditions to get the tetanus bacteria to grow and produce the toxin. Easily preventable disease and terrible death! I will post again the tetanus post I put up a few years ago with information about the disease and vaccination etc. Keep your horses up to date!
