17.01.2022 Australian War Memorial honours Dominion Yachtsmen Scheme On Thursday, 4 May, a plaque dedication ceremony was held at the Australian War Memorial to honour the little known Dominion Yachtsmen Scheme. They volunteered for duty in the darkest days of 1940 when the Admiralty called on the Dominions for men to serve in the Royal Navy. The plaque dedicated at the Australian War Memorial is a significant step in telling their story, a small band of men from Australia who did us and their service proud, and of whom we are proud. - See more at: http://dra.org.au/latest-news-//dominion-yachtsmen-scheme/

04.01.2022 RESERVE FORCES DAY 1 July Reserve Forces Day was inaugurated in 1998 to acknowledge the service and achievements of the Reserve Forces of the Australian Defence... Force both past and present. It also recognises the support of families and employers, which is itself a contribution to the defence of the Nation. A considerable number of Reservists enlisted at the outbreak of World War 1, serving in German New Guinea with the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (ANMEF) and then with the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on the Gallipoli Peninsula, the Western Front and in the Middle East. Reservists continue this tradition today, serving in peacekeeping, humanitarian and other defence roles throughout Australia and overseas. Port Adelaide volunteers, many of them pre-war Reservists, almost completely made up Don Company of the 10th Battalion AIF in 1914. The company was formed at Morphettville, trained in Egypt, and landed on Gallipoli Peninsula at dawn on 25 April 1915 under Captain Mervyn James Herbert, with Captain Felix Giles as his 2IC subsequently Lieutenant-Colonel Felix Gordon Giles DSO VD (1885-1950). Herbert was shot in the shoulder and hand by a sniper on 27 April, and was evacuated from Anzac Cove on 28 April. Giles assumed command of Don Company and served continuously until the evacuation from Gallipoli. Herbert later told a reporter about the Gallipoli landing: The Port Adelaide boys deserve great credit for the part they played. He also said: The Port Adelaide boys always had a reputation for daring. At the time of his funeral in 1964, the 76 year old Herbert from West Croydon was called, one of SAs best known Army officers of World War I. Of note, he was the last surviving company commander of the 10th Battalion who had landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. This paper, Decorated Volunteers, was published in the journal of the Defence Reserves Association The Australian Reservist in November 2003, pages 28-29. It won the Orchard Prize for the best original article published by the Defence Reserves Association in 2003.
