16.01.2022 Dr Gubbay talks Down Syndrome and how it is assessed in pregnancy: Down syndrome is the most common cause of intellectual handicap. There are two main ways of screening for this condition during your pregnancy. 1. First trimster screening (blood test at 10 weeks and ultrasound at 12 weeks) works well for younger women at low risk.... 2. The Harmony test or NIPT (blood test only from 10 weeks) is more accurate and therefore especially suited to women above the age of 37 or 38 who are at higher risk. 02.01.2022 Am I ovulating? Dr Gubbay answers some FAQ surrounding ovulation and trying for a family. Symptoms such as a regular cycle, cervical mucus change (clear and runny like egg white ) and midcycle pain (Mittlesmirch) strongly suggest ovulation. The Best time to try- Your most fertile time is at or just before ovulation. Indeed, although sperm lasts for 4 to 5 days, the egg only lasts for 12 to 24 hours so timing is important.... Ovulation occurs two weeks prior to your period i.e. day 14 in a 28 day cycle. However, this will be on day seven in a 21 day cycle and day 21 in a 35 day cycle. -Remember- Having intercourse every couple of days for 1 week both before and after ovulation maximises your chances. Dr Gubbay consults with fertility patients at St John if God Hospital and performs any necessary fertility procedures through Concept Fertility Centre. Call 08 9382 9550 to book an appointment.
