12.01.2022 REMEMBRANCE DAY : THE ANZAC ARCH Many historic buildings and significant structures have disappeared from Adelaide over the years. Funded by public subscriptio...n, the Anzac Arch was built as a monument of appreciation to the men who fought in the First World War. The foundation stone for the arch was laid on 17th October 1918, and was it formally declared open on 28th January 1919. Situated behind the Adelaide railway station, it stood as a monument of honour to the troops who marched through it on their return. The arch became a place where wreaths were laid, and was used in 1919 and 1920 as a focal point for Violet Day commemorations. Before the poppy became the recognised flower of remembrance, the violet, purple being the colour of remembrance, was the recognised symbol. Edward, Prince of Wales, visited the arch during his 1920 Royal tour in which he thanked the Australians for their participation in the war. Huge crowds amassed to welcome him. The arch was only ever designed to be a temporary structure, and plans for its dismantlement started in 1923. It was not until 1925, however, that it finally came down after becoming unsafe.
