24.01.2022 It is with regret that Softball Australia in conjunction with its member states and territories have had to cancel the 2020/21 U14, U16 & U18 National Champions...hips. In a year like no other before, it is just another curve ball that 2020 has thrown at us. Nationally, there are varying guidelines on how the State Chief Health Officers and state governments react to COVID-19 outbreaks, making it very difficult to guarantee that tournaments will take place without disruption at the various championships venues. While Softball Queensland is very disappointed that our players and team officials will miss out on this opportunity to compete at this year’s national championships, we have now commenced preliminary discussions with Softball NSW to conduct a developmental competition amongst our U14, U16 and U18 squads during the April school holidays. We will give consideration to splitting our squads into two (2) teams as will NSW, to play at least 3-4 games per day. SQI will look to invite additional players into the state squad camp to help with achieving those team selections. SQI is prepared to take advantage of this situation that has been presented and create new opportunities for more players. A tentative date currently being considered in 15-17 April 2021. Confirmed dates, venue and indicative costs will be announced once further details are known. Any additional team personnel and umpire requirements will be considered once more details surrounding the April concept is available. This Sunday’s program of training (for the U14 and U16 squads) and games (for the U18 squads) will still go ahead as planned, to provide all players with another opportunity to further develop their skills across a range of scenarios. These squads have also scheduled another training session for Sunday (13th) as previously advised, so SQI will stick to that training schedule to assist all players with development opportunities. The state squad camp originally scheduled for 22-24 January 2021 has now been revised down to a two (2) day camp to be held on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 January 2021 at Redlands Softball Association. This camp will assist coaches to finalise teams to play against NSW and possibly ACT next April. Softball Queensland wishes to thank all of its 2020/21 state team officials during this period of uncertainty and their commitment to our programs.
