21.01.2022 Christmas gifting Day 5. This is today’s gift. ICLs - Implantable collamer lenses; and RLEs - refractive lens exchange... These are my favourite operations. ICLs are like an implantable contact lens. You can’t see or feel them. They give high definition vision, are permanent and also reversible, and have no long term impact on dry eye which is the most common side effect after laser vision correction. The presbyopia correcting ICL was released in Europe recently - exciting times. I can’t wait to use this in Australia. Refractive lens exchange replaces a patients natural lens . Usually multifocal / trifocal lenses are used to give focus for distance, intermediate and near. Both surgeries aim to decrease or eliminate dependence on glasses or contact lenses for patients. With this kind of surgery the stakes are pretty high for patient and surgeon, as the vision is already excellent with glasses. It’s not like cataracts where a surgical procedure is necessary to improve the vision.
