20.01.2022 One of my patients in ICU shortly after a long operation to remove a benign but slowly enlarging tumour deep within the central fluid cavity of the brain. Removal required a difficult approach between the two halves of the brain to enter the central fluid cavity and remove the tumour, which was curative.

14.01.2022 Recently had the privilege of running Australia's first theoretical and cadaver based course in SIJ fusion using a distraction and arthrodesis mini-open technique (DIANA Procedure). Enormous thankyou to my German colleague Dr Frank Hassel and the German/Australian Signus Team Mary Taylor, Mareike Siedler Ma Reike and Mikhaela Lawson. The course was held at the Medical Research Facilty, Prince Charles Hospital Campus, Brisbane.

12.01.2022 Wise words from one of the most famous neurosurgeons of all time.

11.01.2022 Sadly, malignant brain tumours don't take a Christmas break. A 47 year old woman presented to me just before Christmas with a several year history of slow cognitive decline (ignored by the patient) and a 1 month history of unsteady gait. MRI showed a diffusely infiltrating lesion so widespread that it is inoperable. In this case all we can do is a stereotactic biopsy to obtain a sample of tissue for diagnosis and to guide other treatments such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy. During a stereotactic biopsy, a computer is used to determine the optimal trajectory of a biopsy needle through the brain to a pre-determined target within the tumour. Core samples are taken and sent to a neuropathologist for analysis. The diagnosis was a Grade III anaplastic astrocytoma. Even with radiotherapy and chemotherapy the prognosis is poor.

10.01.2022 Attending the Brazilian Spine Society Congress to give a lecture, speak at a Workshop, run a cadaver lab and talk to individual surgeons about my experience with Sacroiliac Joint fusion using DIANA implant.

04.01.2022 Behind every good surgeon is a team of even better theatre nurses who keep the steam train moving forward. Had to say goodbye (hopefully temporarily) to my Neuro CN Kate today, who unfortunately had gotten herself pregnant and now is off on maternity leave. All the best Kate.
