24.01.2022 State of disaster declared from 6pm tonight. Stage 4 restrictions from 6pm tonight. Curfew every night from 8pm till 5am, starting from 8pm tonight.

19.01.2022 Wearing a face mask is a cheap and easy way to slow the spread of airborne diseases like COVID-19 This video uses an advanced imaging technique called schlieren visualization to show you why masks work. We're all in this together! (from It's Okay to be Smart PBS)

18.01.2022 This graph show every coronavirus case in June, grouped by age. And it paints a picture that I think every young person needs to see. Younger Victorians are cat...ching this virus and spreading it at a higher rate than anyone else. I know some behaviour might seem harmless a few friends over the limit, handshakes and hugs, sharing a drink and ignoring the rules. You think you won't get it you reckon you'll be alright. And I know you're probably sick of hearing about it too - of reading about it, of talking about it. You're probably tired of posts like this from people like me. And I get it, I really do. But this isn't just about you. It's about your mum and your dad, your nonna and yiayia your housemates and friends. It's about doing your bit, and helping protect those who aren't as fit and healthy as you might be. I know I say it a lot but we all have a part to play, and I really do mean that. Talk to your friends, inform your family help stop this getting any worse. I'm not trying to lecture you, or sound like your dad either and this isn't about blaming young people. But the fact is that this virus is infecting the strong, and debilitating the vulnerable. It's a global issue, it affects everyone - and young Victorians have a unique opportunity to do something about it. So please don't let this opportunity pass. Call it out, do your bit and stay apart.

17.01.2022 With other States already easing restrictions, Victorians may be starting to wonder what freedoms 11 May will bring for them. But the 22 new cases of covid disease confirmed in Victoria yesterday (4 May) would seem to suggest that some degree of physical distancing will be required for a few weeks yet to keep us all safe. Would be a shame for the history books to show that these weeks we have already chalked up under stage 3 restrictions were merely our dry run. #staysafevictoria #stayhome #covid19

17.01.2022 And here is a 'social story' about masks for young children.

17.01.2022 Face masks now mandatory in Victoria. Will be enforced from 11.59pm on Wed 22 July 2020. https://www.premier.vic.gov.au//200719-Face-Coverings-Mand

16.01.2022 Is Remdesivir the Silver Bullet to save us from COVID 19? The short answer at this time is that we just don't know. It seems to help people recover quicker but thus far theres no evidence that it stops anyone dying. For now the best advice is to continue with social distancing, hand hygiene and avoiding transfer of nasal and respiratory secretions from person to person.... Still want to know more? 14.01.2022 Everything you need to know about mask wearing in the community. Please share to help keep Victoria (and all of Australia) safe.

13.01.2022 The coronavirus testing blitz continues in Victoria, the main purpose of which is to help ensure Dan Andrews' decision on Monday 11 May about whether to relax restrictions is well-informed and safe. Anyone with sore throat, cough, sniffles, loss of sense of smell, unusual breathing difficulty, fever or chills should get a test. Just 1 of these symptoms makes you a case of interest and someone who should be tested. The good news is that getting tested just got easier, with a l...arge increase in the number of testing stations in Victoria. Many of these testing stations are drive-through. See https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/getting-tested-coronavirus-covi People WITHOUT symptoms but who are frontline workers or identify as ATSI or who are unusually susceptible to coronavirus because of chronic illness can also ask to be tested. But check the small print on this one. Not all testing stations can do swabs on asymptomatic patients because the State rather than Medicare has to pick up the tab. #covid19 #staysafevictoria Anne Connell

07.01.2022 There is nothing shameful about the female body.

05.01.2022 Great advice here from my colleague Dr Moz. If you have even the mildest of respiratory symptoms, get tested! #staysafe #gpexpertadvice

05.01.2022 Mums-to-be are rightfully concerned about COVID-19. Heres a snapshot on current thinking. 1. Pregnant women are no more likely to become infected than the rest of the population, and no more likely to be seriously unwell if they do get infected. In fact, 90% of infected pregnant women will have no symptoms whatsoever. 2. Worldwide, in a very small number of cases, it appears that Mum being infected (even if little or no symptoms) may have been the reason that a baby was born... too early or underweight. So, despite the recent easing of restrictions, pregnant women are well-advised to continue with strict physical distancing and hand hygiene measures. 3. It remains as important as ever to have your regular check-ups during pregnancy, but the service delivery has had to change. Much care will now be delivered by Telehealth, and in-person attendances will be limited to a maximum duration of 15 minutes, with only the pregnant woman attending. Seeing a credentialled shared-care GP has always been a great option for antenatal care, and now is also being recommended as the safest option for public patients because it minimises the need for hospital attendances. 4. If a pregnant woman does contract COVID-19 infection, the odds are heavily in favour of everything turning out well for both Mum and bub. So be cautious and stay safe, but please dont let fear of COVID-19 make your pregnancy a miserable one. 04.01.2022 ...The virus can and does spread undetectedand an asymptomatic case can still cause serious illness if it spreads to someone else. Until a vaccine is available, the safest way to keep coronavirus from spreading is to keep your distance from others, whether youre sick or not.

03.01.2022 Restrictions to be eased in Victoria from 31 May. Rules around physical distancing and hygiene to remain. Advice is to continue working from home if at all possible. #staysafe

03.01.2022 Genetic carrier screening is testing of asymptomatic people to assess the risk that they are carriers for genetic disorder that could afflict their offspring. Recessive genetic conditions result from a procreational game of Snap! that you want to avoid winning. 2 copies of the same dodgy gene (1 from each parent) result in serious disease. Stats suggest that around 1 in 20 of us carries at least 1 dodgy gene. Typically, people only learn that they are carriers when their ...first affected child is born. Expert guidance in Australia is that all parents-to-be should now be offered the option of genetic carrier screening. Costs for testing of 1 partner starts at around $390 for limited testing (cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy, Fragile X), rising to around $1000 per couple for expanded carrier screening (extensive list of conditions). Points to note 1. Testing is optional. 2. Testing is ideally performed before you start trying for your first baby, but can be performed at any time. 3. It is not possible to change your genetic make-up the testing just lets you know if you are at risk so you can plan your reproductive life accordingly. 4. The testing process is an assessment of risk of being a carrier and unfortunately there are both false positives and false negatives. #geneticcarrierscreening #gpexpertadvice Read more on the blog including the options if you are found to be high risk https://www.dranneconnell.com.au//genetic-carrier-screenin
