25.01.2022 Psychology has traditionally been seen as the last resort when it comes to health. When all else fails.... it must be a mental health issue. What if the way we have been approaching this is completely wrong? What would it be like if you were able to have a safe space to talk to someone about your health concerns before you reached a point where you needed to make some difficult decisions?... What if someone can coach you through the process, to keep your mindset on maintaining wellness? I have news for you. You can have that. All you need to do is see a psychologist first.

24.01.2022 Relationships break down when we cease to appreciate our differences.

23.01.2022 Positive psychology is engaging in a process targeted to get you using your strengths, and it’s success is found by you taking action. It is not enough to think positive, you must do positive tasks too. Move from your heart space

21.01.2022 Humans should come with warning labels! But they don’t! Instead, we should be teaching assertiveness and communication skills in school.

19.01.2022 Today is World Mental Health Day. This year it comes at a time where everyone across the globe has been impacted by COVID-19. Mental health is not discriminating in its impact, rich or poor, black or white, make or female - no one is immune from having your emotional health tested under stress.... The goal of this year’s World Mental Health Day campaign from the World Health Organisation is increased investment. Education remains a key priority, with effective and timely interventions from a thriving workforce we can help people get back on their feet and back into life. It’s okay to not be okay, however with access to services people can move from not being okay, to being okay, then to good, and again to great. Let’s do that

18.01.2022 The NSW Rural Women’s Network, in partnership with The Rural Woman, are proud to announce a new project, the BETreat Reset Sessions for Rural Women. These BETreat sessions will be covered online over 8 weeks between October and November and aim to help support rural and regional women after some seriously tough times. Minister for Women, Bronnie Taylor MLC, said the series will recognise and support the essential role women continue to play in helping regional com...munities recover and thrive after the prolonged drought, bushfires, and COVID-19 pandemic. Women are often the lifeblood of rural and regional communities and time and again are the ones who hold the people around them up during tough times, Mrs Taylor said. The program aims to provide them with an opportunity to breathe and reset, as well as gain some essential skills to help them continue to support their families and communities. The powerful and practical sessions will help them in areas such as having difficult conversations and recognising the importance of looking after themselves first. The series will be launched on the International Day of Rural Women on October 15 and events will be hosted during October and November via Zoom. Rural Women’s Network Senior Coordinator, Allison Priest, said the sessions have been designed in response to feedback gathered from teams on the frontline of the recovery and rebuilding process in rural NSW. Each 90-minute session will be hosted and presented by subject matter experts and those with lived experience in disaster recovery, Mrs Priest said. The primary focus is on providing ‘time out’ rather than overloading participants with new information and education. For information on the topics that will be covered, and to register for your interest, head to http://rwnbetreat.online/

17.01.2022 The theme for this year on R U OK day is there’s more to say after R U OK? One of the key experiences of depression is social withdrawal, and often this has started well before the person at risk becomes aware something is not quite right By asking R U Ok? you can show that you want to maintain that social connection. You don’t need to have all the answers and if they don’t want to talk it’s important to understand that’s also OK ... You can still help. A regular check in to say hello and a gentle nudge for them to have a chat with their GP is a nice way to create a safe space for them to stay connected #RUOK #RUOKday #mentalheath #mentalhealthprevention #itsnotweaktospeak #mentalhealthawareness #theresmoretosay

17.01.2022 When you have a complex or chronic medical condition, the journey can be overwhelming. I often hear patients reflect their frustrations, that no one can give them one answer. Your healthcare decisions may be influenced by your lifestyle, culture, religion or personal ethics. Given the same clinical information, two patients can make very different decisions and both outcomes will be right for that person.... What is most important is that we consider the psychological safety of our practice, and ensure our clients feel supported with their choices - but also that their choices are their own. #empoweringthepatient

15.01.2022 Working with young people throughout the pandemic one thing has remained consistent from before the pandemic. They still want their work to be meaningful, they still want to find their passion. Dave Isay, the winner of the 2015 TED Prize and author of Callings: the purpose and passion of work suggests that you don’t just find your calling you have to fight for it. And it’s worth the fight.

15.01.2022 Do you have a daughter? Social psychologist and New York University professor Jonathan Haidt notes a gigantic increase in depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicide among pre-teen and teenage children in the US, who have been on social media since mid-primary school. The numbers of teenage girls admitted to hospital for self-harm was stable until around 2011-13, but in the US these have risen 62 per cent for 15-19-year-olds and 189 per cent for pre-teen girl...s. Suicide rates are up 70 per cent for older teen girls compared with the first decade of this century and in pre-teen girls it's up 151 per cent. Professor Jonathan Haidt suggests that trend is due to to social media

13.01.2022 The National Pain Survey 2020 has been released today. Question 19 asked what do you think the most important thing is that governments can do to support people living with chronic pain? One of the burdens of living with pain is knowing that you can contribute, and if you just had a little more help you could make this a reality. I love this response by one of the contributors to the survey.... When the mind is willing and the body is unable life can feel like a nightmare. Helping people develop mastery and overcome their challenges improves wellbeing. A little investment can go along way #NPW2020 http://chronicpainaustralia.org.au http://nationalpainweek.org.au

10.01.2022 Whilst in the midst of a natural disaster we tend to group together in the first instance and support each other, then shift into problem solving. Many of us were here in this adjustment phase when the second wave of COVID hit. This can be destabilising for even the most stable individuals. When we’re stressed our brains are under the pump, and our thoughts and problem solving ability isn’t quite as good as it normally is. ... Talking to a professional can help you work through blind spots and get you stable again. If you’re in need of more sessions talk to your GP and get a referral. The government has now opened up extra sessions for people within areas with public health orders in place. #itsnotweaktospeak #mentalhealth

10.01.2022 Seeking help at work is still a tricky decision! Stigma may play a role as cultural shift is a long and challenging processes. Things to consider: Your company culture: Do people talk about mental health? Does the company offer resources, like an employee assistance program with free counseling sessions?... Your manager: Has she talked about her own mental health or been vulnerable about other aspects of her life and shared parts that aren’t picture perfect? Be clear about your wishes: Come prepared with a solution, like starting work late on Fridays so you can fit in a tele-health therapy session in the morning. Make sure the accommodation doesn’t impede your ability to do the job. When in doubt, keep it vaguebut don’t lie. You can seek support from your local GP and psychologist for support to meet your requirements for leave.

05.01.2022 Verbal abuse is the forceful insult, driven by anger and hostility within the communicator. It’s intention is to harm the self identity of the person on the receiving end, to gain control. Note the intention to harm. For me one of those insults came in the form of You need to be pulled down a peg or two missy.... Note the mechanism of control.
