21.01.2022 Building stronger healthier hooves for this thoroughbred. He had terrible hooves and was extremely tender footed when I met him after coming back from a lessee. Treating and eliminating white line disease, seedy toe and thrush with D.R. Equine’s HOOF HEALER.... 21.01.2022 I’m extremely picky (aka obsessed/ocd ) when it comes to hooves, limbs and biomechanics of the horses I work on and notice the little things that many people don’t. Don’t ask me to evaluate a horse if you really don’t want my opinion, you may not like it! This horse’s owner asked me to come and take his shoes off as, after stalking every post (her words ) on my page she was sure that she could see that there were issues and she was concerned. At the very least she knew... both of their horses needed a rest out of shoes to fix their hooves. ONE of the things I noticed was how base wide in the hinds this horse would stand and the imbalances in his hooves forced them to twist in a way that made him look pigeon toed/turned in when he actually isn’t. Amongst the issues in the hooves.... NPA in all hooves Thrush including central sulcus thrush splitting the heel bulbs White line disease Caudal hoof failure Imbalances Collapsed & contacted heels 3 months after taking his shoes off.... Base wide and turned in stance in the hinds has disappeared he is growing stronger hooves Imbalances are correcting NPA is correcting nicely Heel bulbs are widening and lifting off the ground Thrush is cleared and the frogs are regenerating beautifully White line disease is cleared up or close to it where we have chased the deep seated bacteria His hooves are toughening as his owner takes him for walks on different surfaces to stimulate the hooves Bacteria has been regularly treated with D.R. 17.01.2022 There is a misguided belief in the industry that shoeing is necessary if the hoof has a quarter crack. On the contrary, trim the hoof correctly and the hoof will respond and improve. Allowing heels to become under run and hooves to become flared & imbalanced will put unnecessary pressure on the quarter crack prolonging and exacerbating the issue. 17.01.2022 Progress of a little something we’ve been working on. Photos are a bit wonky as he was on uneven ground but you get the idea. This horse suffered a catastrophic injury to this hoof around 6 years ago and since then, his hoof wall has been severely damaged due to the nature of the injury and the subsequent surgery required. His owners contacted me when he was coming out of a cast from a second recent severe injury to this same hoof, this time slicing the lateral (outside) he...el. For the last few months we have been treating the hoof wall damage with D.R. Equine’s HOOF HEALER & HOOF SPRAY and putting a bell boot on to keep as much treatment as possible on the wall. There was evidence of bacteria within this damaged wall so as is often the case, we needed to treat that issue and treatment has resulted in improvements to another issue, that being the damaged hoof wall growth and scarring. The hoof wall is responding and starting to connect and knit together as it is growing out. The raised scarring at the coronary band from the surgery has significantly reduced. He is unlikely to ever have perfect growth in this hoof but we can certainly manage it and hopefully continue to see more improvements over time. 15.01.2022 At only 12 days out of a full set of shoes on a horse struggling with imbalance and movement issues.....can you see what is happening? This warmblood gelding’s hind hooves were terribly imbalanced with under run, prolapsed & contracted heels. To easily see the improvement, follow the hairline and note how the lateral heel bulb has relaxed, widening and is changing. On this hoof, the lateral side is on the right. The medial heel is also changing and a few months down the trac...k we will have a much happier, healthier, functional hoof that has gone through changes as the caudal hoof repairs itself from the damage. Give the horse the right assistance and the body will do the rest. When I take shoes off horses to transition them to barefoot (where possible), I do a tidy up trim at around 2 weeks as unfortunately due to the previous damage to the walls from the nails, there will be some breakage. It’s inevitable, but if we get onto it quickly and treat the hooves as well, breakage can be minimised whilst we grow out the damaged hoof. Now that the white line disease is under control, the separation was not allowed to continue deteriorating and has been removed at this second trim. 14.01.2022 Panic stations! Or is it? If there is any breed of animal that seems to be prone to injuring itself, it has to be the horse. So what do you do when you find your horse has seriously damaged its hoof?... Breathe! Don’t panic, many can not think clearly when stressed. Stop, breathe and focus so you can assess the situation. Get the horse into a clean, dry (well lit if possible) environment. Clean the hoof as best you can so you can take some clear photos to send for help & advice. Some betadine or saline to flush the area. Contact your qualified hoof care professional and/or Vet with the information and photos. We can let you know whether you will need to arrange for a Vet to also be there when we arrive or if we will meet you at the Vet surgery or your property. Depending on the severity of the injury, it may or may not be necessary to have a Vet on hand to sedate, radiograph & medicate the horse. Protect the hoof whilst waiting for the professionals to arrive. Padded gauze and vet wrap are the basics that you would need to have on hand. A hoof boot would be beneficial to even further protect the injured hoof. It would be wise to update your horse’s tetanus booster. When found by his owner, this horse was slightly tender and there was blood at the injury site. I advised her to bandage the hoof until I could get there and we would get him sorted. After assessment, I removed the damaged hoof, applied some D.R. Equine’s HOOF HEALER as an antibacterial treatment and to protect the sensitive tissue from direct contact with the glue, built a repair out of glue and applied a cast to protect the hoof. 14.01.2022 At only a little under 3 months since removing this show jumping mare’s shoes (still jumping without shoes) and we have significant improvements already. The caudal hoof has responded and is repairing beautifully. The thrush riddled frogs are flourishing and growing into the strong, healthy concussion absorbing pads that they should be. This particular horse had been lame for a few years for multiple reasons including chronic thrush which had eaten away his frogs. He is no longer lame, has been ridden and has grown back his frogs. I have a number of 18hh+ horses on my schedule and he’s certainly up there with them. When I first saw him, he was lame due to laminitis. 09.01.2022 Video shared with permission. 6 months ago, this Thoroughbred gelding was extremely tender footed and his hooves were in terrible condition having just come back from a lessee who did not get him the proper hoof care that he needed. His owner has always been told that this horse will never be out of shoes as his soles are too thin.... When I agreed to take him on, shoes would not even stay on his hooves due to their extremely poor condition. It was very much a ‘trust me, I’ll get him there’ situation as I could tell they had had so much trouble with his hooves in the past. Equine’s HOOF HEALER & HOOF SPRAY. Progressively, his hooves have been improving at each visit and with stimulation, his soles are getting stronger and stronger. He was initially quite difficult to trim as he was so sore but within a couple of trims his demeanour had changed and I now just go into his paddock and trim him without a handler and untied. He loves his pedicures and cuddles. He has had some injuries over the last few months to also recover from but he has still always been happy to have his hooves done. I saw this video and it made me so happy to see him coming along so nicely and doing so well. Still improvements to make with his hooves but he is definitely getting there. Going from lame and never to be without shoes to becoming sound and building strong hooves is fabulous for him and his owner. This gigantic thoroughbred (very close to 18hh if not right on it) reached a huge milestone for his huge self today. 03.01.2022 Aged mare who is coming back into light work to be a trusty steed for a little girl and desperately needed her hooves fixed. She is now on a 4 weekly trim cycle. Photos are before first trim and after the second trim. Note the angle changes of not only the lower limb but the coronary band and heel. The hoof wall change in direction is easy to see when you find the crack near the outside quarter of the wall and compare the direction differences between the two photos. ... My client asked if she could take a time lapse video of me trimming these welsh ponies today to show how far they have come and to share with friends and fellow owners in a group that had taken on ponies from this same group of rescues. These two ponies were unhandled, scared and actually quite wild little stallions rescued from a drought situation and taken on by my client. ... I believe there may be one or two (?) left that need homes if anyone is looking for a project. I started trimming them in around April this year, so that is approximately 6 months ago, after they had received some initial handling and had been gelded. The first couple of trims required some extra time and patience (and bravery! ) on everyone’s part but they have improved each time and are doing so well now with some regular handling and care. The grey was a little fidgety today due to the flies after storms yesterday so we moved around a little with him but he usually is quite good standing in the same spot. He has very tough, hard hooves but has been doing a lot of trail riding lately and his owner wants to make sure his hooves don’t get worn down or bruised from the rough trails.
