25.01.2022 If you’ve gained some weight over the past few months, you’re definitely not the only one. Here’s a great article explaining how we naturally reach for food in stressful situations. https://www.google.com.au//the-psychology-of-comfort-food-

23.01.2022 Reminder for those of you on Lantus (insulin glargine) it will be off PBS July 1. Alternatives are Optisulin or Semglee. I’ve attached info from Sanofi from earlier this year.

21.01.2022 It’s been an exciting day being interviewed about the launch of our new book Diabetes for Smarties. 20.01.2022 RUOK Day - 1 in 7 will experience depression in their lifetime. A smile does not necessarily mean a person is happy. They may actually be very unhappy. The smile deflects questions and gets them through their day. I know, I've been there. Nobody would have known as I smiled through my day and cried all the way home in the safety of my car. If someone had asked if I was OK, the tears would have come sooner. Why are so many of us afraid to be perceived as weak or not c...oping? So yes, we may need someone to genuinely ask us RUOK and be allowed a safe space to release the pressure on ourselves a bit. You don't have to have the answers or solve the problem. You just need to be there. That's OK. Having a chronic condition, like type 2 diabetes increases the risk for depression; add the stressors of COVID-19 and that risk increases. Now is the time to support each other and those closest to others and ensure they ROK, today and every day See more

17.01.2022 When is the best time for you to check BGLs? This depends on what you’re trying to find out. Sometimes your doctor will ask you to check first thing in the morning, before you have anything to eat or drink. This will show how much glucose your liver releases overnight while you’re sleeping (your liver releases glucose to keep you alive while you’re asleep, in type 2 diabetes your liver can leak too much out). If your BG levels are above target, talk to your doctor, you may ne...ed a review of your diabetes medications. Checking before bed is helpful if you’re at risk of hypoglycaemia (low BGLs). This will give you time to get your levels back up before you go to bed. Paired monitoring - checking before and then 2 hours after a meal, was explained in a previous post about carbs. This will tell you if your body has been able to get all the glucose from your meal into your cells. If your BG is elevated 2 hours after, look at previous posts to see what you can change. If your BGLs are consistently within your target range, and your HbA1c, (three monthly BG average), is under 6.5% you don’t need to check your levels all. I've attached a monitoring sheet with a couple of options. Initially use the one where you can record food, activity etc so you can start to understand what is affecting your BG levels. Let me know how you go and any questions you have

16.01.2022 Although National Diabetes Week is coming to an end, we're still here! Post your question or continue to private message us with questions or health concerns. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=279471169954172

15.01.2022 Very excited - our books arrived today!! So great to hold them in our hands. So happy with the quality. Posted all the pre purchased orders out today. Thank you everyone for your patience. I think our next book will be about what we learned about writing a book to save others a lot of time and money

15.01.2022 National Diabetes Week starts today. This year the focus is on the mental health of people who have diabetes. You'll all have seen how stress can have an impact your blood glucose levels (BGLs). The frustration of this can then increase your BGLs further. Ongoing stress from the demands of managing diabetes every day, without a day off, not always feeling supported or understood by family, friends or health professionals, can lead to a very real condition called Diabetes ...Distress. This can negatively affect how you manage your diabetes, which is totally understandable. If you're feeling overwhelmed, beating yourself up or want to give up, talk to your GP. Be very honest about how you're feeling. Ask about seeing a Psychologist to help you through this time. You may be eligible for a plan to subsidise these appointments. Sometimes a fresh way of looking at how you feel and talking to someone who can listen objectively, can be a huge help. Remember, nobody can manage their diabetes perfectly or have their BGL's perfect. The notion of 'control' is a myth. There are too many variables in life that get in the way, and have an impact on your diabetes management. Big message is to be kind to yourself, as you would with anyone else in your situation. Reach out to us in a message (from our website) or on this page. We're here for you and will keep cheering you on. See more

15.01.2022 Happy Monday! Today we have a challenge for you. If you were to buy a book on managing your diabetes, what would the title say? We’re not talking cure, special diets or anything. Just a real down to earth guide, with templates, tips and lots of visuals in colour. It’s about 80 pages, currently eBook but we’re finding ways to print it as we believe this information simply presented is needed in the community. The next version will have twice as many visuals to make it even easier and quicker to understand. I’ll attach a copy of some of the pages today to give you an idea what it’s like. We’ll be giving away 5 copies to the people who give us the 5 best ideas. For the one we use, we’ll acknowledge you in the book. What do you think? Up to the challenge? Can’t wait to hear your ideas

14.01.2022 A commonly asked question ‘Is sourdough bread a good choice for people with diabetes?’ My answer is YES! In small amounts, sourdough bread is likely to have less impact on blood glucose levels than the usual white or wholemeal bread. The fermentation process of sourdough alters the structure of the starch in the bread. These changes make the starch (fibre) harder to digest (just like wholegrain bread), resulting in slower absorption of glucose into the bloodstream at one ti...me. Remember to check your blood glucose levels before and then 2 hours after your meal to determine how much bread (or other carb) your body can manage. If anybody has a good sourdough recipe please let me know!

13.01.2022 Have you ever wondered why Greek Yoghurts taste so delicious these days? It’s because they’ve been adding cream (yes, I was devastated too..) Another reason to read the ingredients list. I’ve done the hard work for you though and analysed many of the supermarket yoghurts... the only Greek Yoghurts I found without cream were..... Woolworths fat free Greek Coles reduced fat Greek

11.01.2022 This is one of the pages from our book Get Smart with Type 2 Diabetes The previous pages instruct how to treat a hypo (low BGL), and this page follows on with the reminder that if you’re on insulin or oral medication that can put you at risk of hypo, you must be above 5mmols to drive If you’re not at risk of hypo (check with your GP or Diabetes Educator if unsure), this doesn’t apply to you as normal blood glucose levels (BGLs) are 4mmols -7.8mmols. Questions? Post them here.

10.01.2022 Need another reason to start exercising? When you use your muscles, the glucose stored in these muscles is used for energy. The muscle cells will then need to refuel. Glucose will be absorbed from your blood for at least the next 20 hours!... Exercise will also help your glucose levels come down after meals. (Check your levels before and then after exercise as an experiment and you'll see what I mean). Resistance exercise tip number 1: While you're waiting for the kettle to boil, do 10-15 squats (start with less if you need to) Step 1: Stand straight with feet hip-width apart Step 2: Tighten your stomach muscles Step 3: Lower down, as if sitting in an invisible chair Step 4: Straighten your legs to lift back up Step 5: Repeat the movement

06.01.2022 Have you been searching for healthy breakfast cereals for kids? Be careful not to fall for some of the nutrition claims on cereal packets. Instead... learn to read the label. Step 1. Look at the per 100g column when comparing cereals. ... Step 2. Check for: Sodium: Less than 400mg per 100g is good, and less than 120g per 100g is best. Sugars: Less than 15g per 100g Saturated Fat: Less than 3g per 100g Fibre: 10g or more per 100g is best Step 3: Check the ingredients. If sugar (see my previous post for other names used for sugar) is in the first three ingredients, you know the cereal has high sugar content. See my example comparison of some popular kids breakfast cereals- I've highlighted the best four that I reviewed.

03.01.2022 Helpful information re protecting yourself with better and best choice masks during this time

02.01.2022 What can affect my blood glucose levels? Managing blood glucose levels (BGLs) is both an art and a science and can be frustrating as I’m sure you agree. Factors that can increase your BGLs:... Certain foods and drinks (think GI and serving size) Stress - emotional and physical stress. Pain is a stress to the body and a common culprit. Illness and infection Lack of sleep Undiagnosed sleep apnoea (do you snore?) Increased waist gain (this isn't immediately noticed but will increase your BGLs over time) Inactivity Some medications - cortisone is a common one Not washing your hands before checking your BGLs may give you a false high reading. Factors that can decrease your BGLs: Exercise will help lower your BGLs for hours after (despite sometimes an initial rise) Relaxation techniques Diabetes medication Insulin injections Decreased waist measurement Your BGLs will never be perfect all the time. You’ll sometimes have high levels for unknown reasons, and that’s ok. It’s good to know your BGLs so you can make changes where needed. Be gentle on yourself - you're doing the best you can
