24.01.2022 One of the most common questions I get asked about clear aligners is ‘should I choose Invisalign or Smile Direct?’ Similarities: Both are a series of clear aligners designed to move your teeth... Differences: A trained dentist -Invisalign is completed by a qualified dentist that you have met with and discussed your goals. Your dentist will complete a thorough check and examine X-rays to consider your teeth, gums and bones for the best and safest result. -Smile Direct delivers your treatment without you attending a dentist Material -Invisalign uses its patented SmartTrack material which has been shown to be more predictable, faster and more comfortable than other aligners. Attachments -Invisalign utilises small tooth coloured shapes to help with difficult tooth movements. Without these, movements like uprighting and significant rotations, intrusion and extrusion are not possible. In person monitoring & continuity of care -Continuity of care is provided throughout your whole Invisalign journey with close and careful monitoring to ensure your teeth movements are on track and staying healthy. Reshaping -In some your teeth may need to be reshaped to make space for movements. This can only be competed by a dentist Capabilities Invisalign can correct almost any smile discrepancy. Smile direct is limited to mostly forward and backward, with limited rotations and up and down movements Cost -Smile direct: $2749 or $3059 if paid monthly. Not including retainers -Invisalign: ranges depending on the amount of movement required. At Bexley Dental: Starting at $2500 for minor single arch movement to $8500 for full orthodontic and bite correction. Including all records, aligners, visits, retainers, hygiene visit and tooth whitening. As with anything in life there are always cheaper alternatives. There are many reasons why this might be the case but it usually involves more risk. Orthodontics involves moving teeth through gums and bone, altering the way you bite, eat, talk, smile and jaw. It’s best to make sure that the risk of this not going as planned is a small as possible!

15.01.2022 We all know that eating too much sugar can lead to tooth decay and cavities. Did you know it’s not the sugar itself that does the damage? Let me make it clear that sugar is the culprit which is responsible for the chain of events that leads to a cavity. The mouth is full of bacteria, and some of them feed on the sugar you eat to produce harmful acid. This acid can make a hole in the enamel eventually getting to the nerve and killing the tooth. There are ways that you can pre...vent cavities from occurring, and I’ve listed a few of these tips below. Brush AND Floss Clean the bacteria off the teeth twice a day. The less bacteria stuck to the teeth the less acid that can be created to cause a hole. Consume Sugar Less Frequently Reduce the amount & frequency of sugar you eat/drink. No more than 4 times a day and not within 1 hour before bed. Fluoride Found in most toothpastes and tap water. Fluoride strengthens the enamel which makes it more resistant to the acid the bacteria make. Sugar free gum This helps produce extra saliva which has calcium in it to fight decay.

12.01.2022 Did you know that your teeth are connected to your jawbone with tiny ligaments? When your teeth are moved with Invisalign or braces these ligaments are stretched and restructured into the new tooth position. These ligaments have ‘muscle memory’ so without retention your teeth will try to move back to their original place. Research shows that there isn’t a ‘safe’ amount of time after orthodontics where teeth will not move.... There are two major types of retainers: Removable retainers Fixed retainers (bonded wire) Removable retainers have the advantage of holding all of the teeth in their new position, and must be worn regularly to be effective. With fixed retainers you don’t have to remember to wear them which is a positive. However, it is limited in which teeth it can retain cannot be placed in all cases depending on your bite. The regime I recommend for my Invisalign patients is ‘Dual Retention’: A fixed retainer where possible, and a removable clear retainer to be worn at night - initially nightly, but reduced to once a week after 12 months, for as long as you want to keep your teeth straight
