16.01.2022 Gerard Barrett, the boy from Beaudesert in Queensland, seemingly emerged from nowhere in the late 1970s to impact distance running on both sides of the Tasman with his courageous barefoot front-running, and within a few years he had national titles over 5000m, 10000m, and marathon. He was an exciting runner to watch in action. Here he recalls his early years and how he discovered he had a talent for running.

In the wake of New Zeland's great middle distance superstars; Walker, Rod Dixon and Quax; Geoff Shaw was New Zealand's best-performed Under-20 athlete in the mid 1970s. Undefeated in Under-20 races over cross-country, road or on the track for several years. Geoff tells us how he trained as a Junior athlete and how he felt he may have erred on the side of too much intensity in his training as youngster. (Part 2 of this interview, discusses his re-emergence as an athlete in the mid-1980s - stay tuned.)

04.01.2022 Geoff Shaw was the best junior distance runner of his generation in the 1970s, both in New Zealand and possibly the world. Geoff was known for his "never say die" attitude in races. His records are only now being despatched, after over 40 years, by the current wave of super-talented youngsters in New Zealand. His stunning debut at age 20 at senior international level in 1977 was followed by several major health challenges. Despite these challanges, Geoff made it back to a good state of health after several years, and by the mid 1980s he was again a national champion, under the eye of coach Arch Jelley.
02.01.2022 Some lucky youngsters in Far North Queensland are members of Pace Project a running club set up for youngsters by Jill Boltz (nee Hunter), a two time Olympian for Great Britain who was trained by famed British coach, the late Harry Wilson, coach of a handy runner named Steve Ovett. Jill is married to Danny Boltz, who we talked to last week, and as well as starring on the track over 10,000m for Great Britain, she ran in the top nine finishers in the World Cross Country Championships three times, in 1988, 1989, and 1991. Here Keith chats with Jill about what she’s up to these days.
