15.01.2022 One souvenir you don't want to come home with when visiting the Tip of Australia is a stingray barb, especially one lodged in your leg! Recently, teacher Liam ...was enjoying his school holiday break and whilst walking in the shallows accidentally stood on a stingray. Both Liam and the stingray got quite the fright and the barb became lodged in Liam's calf. After a short trip on road with our paramedics, some time in Bamaga Hospital and a helicopter ride to Cairns for surgery, Liam is back home with an unusual story for 'show and tell'. A tip from the Tip is to create noise and vibrations when walking in shallows to warn stingrays and keep your eyes peeled for sea creatures. If you ever find yourself on the end of a stingray barb, the best antidote for the pain from their toxin is to submerge the affected area in hot (not boiling) water, as you can see by the innovative use of the green bins by the staff at Bamaga Hospital. We're glad you're on the road to recovery Liam!

13.01.2022 Nosebleedsare very common in children, but can be distressing for them due to the sight and taste of their blood. Give them a drink or ice-block to help take ...away the taste and get them to spit out any blood in their mouth to help prevent vomiting. It’s important to keep a child calm because crying will make the bleeding worse. Here's what to do Most nosebleeds will involve minimal bleeding and last for less than 10 minutes. Seek medical attention if the bleeding doesn’t stop or you are still concerned. See our fact sheet link in comments for more information.
