25.01.2022 We have being treating children via Zoom video conferencing recently, and these consults have been proving to be a very effective way of working with children. So we are very keen to present the Healthy Breathing, Healthy Child online. This is the first time we’ll be presenting this course in this way, and we are preparing lots of support material to make it a very worthwhile and engaging way to learn and practice! https://www.rosalbacourtney.com/healthy-breathing-healthy-/

25.01.2022 I so enjoyed my conversation with Dr Steven Lin. We covered dysfunctional breathing, the three dimensions of functional breathing, hyperventilation, children and breathing patterns and upper airway issues, breathing retraining, mindfulness, heart rate variability and much more Dr Steven Lin is a dentist with a background in biomedical science, nutrition and fitness which he uses as a platform to help people understand the relationship between their mouth, how to eat healthy and their lives. He is author of the bestselling ‘The Dental Diet’ Watch it here https://www.rosalbacourtney.com/dr-steven-lim-interview-be/

24.01.2022 I found this study interesting. During the breath hold oxygen to muscles reduced but brain oxygen increased in most people but not the two outliers who could not tolerate the breath holds. The response of these two outliers was a bit similar to what you see in patients with POTS, (lack of vasoconstriction in the peripheries and reduced cerebral blood flow). POTS patients have dysautonomia and loss of cardiorespiratory homeostasis. They also have an increased tendency to dysfunctional breathing and low breath holding time.

23.01.2022 Woohoo we are starting to get somewhere

23.01.2022 So pleased to have had the opportunity to talk on Children and Sleep for ADHD Support Australia! I cover key factors that disrupt sleep and share strategies for improving sleep through various means, including improved breathing. Sleep impacts on working memory and many other cognitive skills. Many children diagnosed with ADHD show major improvements in learning and behaviour when sleep is improved. Some sleep problems are caused by obstructed airways and sleep disordered bre...athing. Improving a child’s breathing can be the key to improved sleep and also to better brain function, learning and behaviour. https://www.rosalbacourtney.com/optimising-sleep-and-breat/

22.01.2022 I'm really looking forward to presenting this course - learn techniques, beyond Buteyko, for assessing breathing and for individualised functional breathing and nasal rehabilitation! and it's online! In this course I’ll be teaching my clinical protocols for functional nasal and upper airway rehabilitation. There’ll be theory and lots of practical. I’ll also teach a simple version of the Manual Assessment of Respiratory Motion (MARM), an evidence based technique for assessing ...functionality of breathing pattern. Included too is my Breathing Basics protocol with a focus on how to restore functional and coordinated whole body breathing. Begins 6-9pm Tues 27 Oct (New Jersey USA time), 8-11am Wed 28 Oct (Sydney Australia time) https://www.rosalbacourtney.com/intro-to-integrative-breat/

21.01.2022 Not long now! Join me to learn to assess and treat nose breathing patients. Learn practical breathing retraining that integrates the whole of body breathing and myofunctional therapy. Learn the strengths, limitations and applications of breathing techniques including the Buteyko Breathing technique, diaphragmatic breathing, respiratory muscles strength training and others. Understand why breathing is often the missing link in the treatment of patients with neuromuscular, po...stural and structural dysfunctions, stress disorders and difficult to treatconditions. Understand the real world difference between functional and dysfunctional breathing. https://www.rosalbacourtney.com/intro-to-integrative-breat/

17.01.2022 From the Medical Journal of Australia From the Medical Journal of Australia: "The majority of patients who are ventilated for more than 7 days suffer complications that require rehabilitation, 60% are unable to walk, and 17% die within a year. Onethird suffer neurological complications, many require inpatient rehabilitation for over 3 weeks, and some take over 150 days to regain their capacity to walk independently. Others with stroke or cardiac complications of COVID19 will require rehabilitation for up to 6 weeks, with some requiring lifelong support".

17.01.2022 This video is sound and reliable information about vaccines from a real experts that explains many fundamental concepts e.g. what herd immunity means, the different types of vaccines , how a covid free life is possible and what needs to be done to achieve this. I think this is essential viewing. https://www.youtube.com/watch

16.01.2022 So many great speakers at this conference. Im honored to be one fo them and so looking forward to hearing others. There is always so much to learn in this important field. Health starts with good breathing and a proper airway. It cant be emphasised enough. https://aamsinfo.org/2020-congress/

15.01.2022 If you missed my Buteyko and Wim Hof method talk the recording is now available On the surface Wim Hof method and Buteyko seem polar opposites. Buteyko says that hyperventilation is never ok, that it’s the cause of most chronic diseases and Wim Hof uses hyperventilation to increase resilience and to activate the body's healing response. When you look a little deeper you see that these techniques have some important similarities. Both require mental discipline, focus and en...gagement with the sensations of the body. Both have ardent fans who have healed themselves of severe diseases. So the question for practitioners is how do we choose which technique is the best for a person? How do we avoid adverse reactions and is it possible to combine these two techniques? https://www.rosalbacourtney.com/understanding-the-buteyko-/

12.01.2022 In my travels exploring breathing I've come across many different styles of breathing therapy. Proponents swear by particular counts e.g. inhale 4.hold 6.breathe out 6. hold 2 or in 4, hold 7 out 8 or in for 4 and out for 6 etc etc. Some techniques focus on the inhale, others on the exhale. I've tried to work out the physiological rationale for different rhythms and my conclusion is that variability is the key. Breathing rhythms heal for different reasons. That’s why I'm s...till fascinated by it and have not come to the bottom of the story even after 27 years of exploration. We don’t have the full story but interesting to see this research from Stanford about rhythm generation. https://med.stanford.edu//study-discovers-how-slow-breathi

12.01.2022 Interview with Dr. Lewis Ehrlich

11.01.2022 Hoping you can help me. I'm doing a survey on how different folks ( including different professional groups) define " breathing therapy". Would love to know what people in this group have to say. If you are a breathing professional or a health professional who uses breathing in your work can you please say what you do and what your definition is?

11.01.2022 For those people interested in accessing the recording of the webinar ONLY as they are not able to attend it live (due to time differences), the organisers have created a special ticket to purchase at the following link: https://events.humanitix.com/aima-breathing-workshop Once the webinar has been, they will email a link to those people who have purchased this ticket type and they can view it online.

10.01.2022 On the surface Wim Hof method and Buteyko seem polar opposites. When you look a little deeper you see that these techniques have some important similarities. Both require mental discipline, focus and engagement with the sensations of the body. Both have ardent fans who have healed t...hemselves of severe diseases. So the question for practitioners is how do we choose which technique is the best for a person? How do we avoid adverse reactions and is it possible to combine these two techniques? I’ll address these questions and much more in tomorrow night’s 2 hour presentation (you can also buy a recording if you can't make it) 6-8pm Tues 18 Aug Sydney Australia time https://www.rosalbacourtney.com/understanding-the-buteyko-/

10.01.2022 In this 2hr workshop, I will explore the Buteyko and Wim Hof breathing methods, and will have you experience them. Both methods are used by patients to treat specific conditions such as asthma and chronic fatigue or to improve exercise capacity or stress tolerance. However, the Buteyko method teaches various forms of breath reduction while Wim Hof encourages deep and full breathing. Both methods have been demonstrated to be effective for some patients and both methods can be... contraindicated or ineffective if used inappropriately. I will look at the theories and research underlying these two methods as well as clinical matters such as how to determine which patients might or might not benefit. https://events.humanitix.com/aima-breathing-workshop

01.01.2022 I'm currently doing some research with SCU students on free divers to see how breathing exercises that improve the functional capacity of the cardiorespiratory system impact on both the "easy" and the struggle phases of breath holding. Free divers are the opposite to people with dysfunctional breathing but psychology plays a role in both groups. This article is one of the few articles around that compares free divers to dysfunctional breathers. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7017271/
