24.01.2022 Terri Butler MP Member for Griffith Shadow Minister for the Environment and Water Dear Ms Butler, I agree with you 100% on our current Liberal Coalition being deniers of Climate Change and deniers of crises facing iconic species such as koalas, platypus, and even shorebirds like the Eastern Curlew, which spends part of its life cycle in Moreton Bay. ... Every single person I speak to up here around Moreton Bay agrees it is a disgrace that our current federal government is having secret meetings with a wealthy developer, giving permission to destroy part of the Ramsar protected shorebird zone. In 2016 the Developer gave a generous donation of a quarter of a million dollars to the federal government coffers. Now the Australian Conservation Foundation is making legal representation to the government to find out exactly what is going on. When the facts are exposed this "rort at the port" will make the "sports rort" look like child's play because this involves many more millions of dollars and there are many fingers in the pie. I would like you to be an Environment Minister who actually stands up for the Environment, which is more than I can say for Sussan Ley, Melissa Price and Josh Frydenberg. Each of these three people have been light weights with regard to the environment. Many of us still remember when Tony Burke was Environment Minister. At the 11th hour he stopped a foreign super trawler from doing massive damage to our Tasmanian coastline by intervening in what could have been irreversible coastal damage. It would have also destroyed our coastal fishing industry in the region. I would like to be able to report that the Qld State Labor Government is upholding its own environment policy but I'm sorry to tell you that under Jackie Trad the Party decided to support the Walker Corporation Toondah Harbour Proposal. A $23,000 donation was given to Qld State Labor by the developer in 2016. Trad has now been demoted but a lot of damage has been done. The State Labor Environment Minister, Leanne Enoch, is kept quiet by her own Party. She has family Aboriginal ties to North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) so she obviously doesn't want any irreversible environmental damage in Moreton Bay. Please expose this "rort at the port" for what it is. The environment and climate change are what I call the Achille's heal of the current Liberal Government. My vote is determined by the issues of the day and like many other Australians I believe the health of our environment is crucial to our well being. See more

22.01.2022 orangutans in Sepilok Wildlife Sanctuay in Sandakan, Borneo. They are free to come and go into this national park.

21.01.2022 I am not against visiting Chinese tourists but I am against wealthy Chinese entrepreneurs establishing large tourism and hotel businesses in the Redlands, including Minjerribah, which directly compete with local tourism businesses because they are having enough problems as it is. Try reading pages 16-18 of today's (29/08/20) Courier Mail titled "Lookout Point Lookout, we are coming" to see some of the problems facing businesses on Straddie. The Quandamooka people on Minjerrib...ah are also concerned about the type of business Mayor KW and Jackie Trad have been spruiking in Beijing, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The Mayor has written a 34 page summary of her visits to these countries and her endeavours to attract business to the Redlands. At the same time the Council has a Tourism Section which has failed local tourism businesses in the 12 years I ran my own business. This was before the current crop of councillors were elected because I opted out of the RCC tourism emails in 2012. Many of those businesses failed, however, I kept mine alive by transferring from the tourism sector to the education sector. Business owners on Minjerribah now say their problems are mainly due to lack of accountability and lack of communication from QYAC. The article makes interesting reading. Check out the problems faced by the bee keeper and also the Indigenous owner of Straddie Adventures. See more

21.01.2022 Good luck Lacey because we need new blood in council and a move away from feathering one's own nest combined with the game of mates that has been at play between certain councillors and the LNP. I'm not a supporter of Labor or any other political party but we all know of certain junket trips taken by some councillors to overseas locations at rate payer expense. These need to stop because they do nothing for the rate payers. Then there is intimidation of some residents by coun...cillors. Cr Gleeson will probably leave after the last episode, for which he was fined a further $700. Then there was the lady who lost her university lecturing position after a letter was sent by the RCC lawyer, with authorisation from the Mayor, to the Dean of the university. According to the Qld Council Ombudsman three council staff were involved in her losing her job, the CEO, Bill Lyon, the Mayor, Karen Williams and the lawyer, who is paid by rate payers. The woman's crime was to distribute a petition about the overall conduct of the RCC. I myself have also been intimidated on two occasions because I tend to be outspoken. The first involved a client of my educational biology field trips. She was threatened by a Redland City Council Coordinator that she would lose her job if her children went on another educational field trip with their father and my educational field trip service. Why? Because I had been critical of the RCC Tourism Section after four years of no assistance to any of at least 50 tourism businesses in the Redlands. Most went into liquidation while I moved my business from the tourism to the education sector. In 2019 I received a call from the police sergeant at Redland Police Station with two questions - was my name Dr Tafe and had I contradicted the view of the Mayor in one of my posts. I replied YES to both and who wants to know? He said he had been given the instruction by the local Chief of Police. When I told him I was not about to be intimidated and would be writing another post he asked would I please mention that the Redland Police have apprehended 3 offenders involved with the vandalising of 17 cars at Weinam Creek Ferry Terminal. I did just that. We need a council that works with us rather than trying to intimidate or bully us. See more

19.01.2022 No wildlife safaris to Serengeti in East Africa planned this year because of Covid19 but we hope to plan one for August 2021 at half the normal price. This is the time of the Wildebeest Migration. Check out the photos on www.drtafesafaris.com.au

15.01.2022 A shark-cage dive with Great White Sharks is exciting but if you prefer a marine experience with a little less risk try a swim (snorkel) with whale sharks at Ningaloo Reef at Exmouth at the top of WA. Whale sharks, unlike true whales, are fish and not mammals. They can be 8-10 m in length and do not eat people or even large fish. A day trip on a large boat to the Reef from Exmouth will cost around $450 but you can find yourself swimming alongside a whale shark, giving it 2-3 m for its personal space.

13.01.2022 We all know that money and generous donations are driving some politicians like Andrew Laming and even the former Federal Environment Minister, Josh Frydenberg, who ignored the findings of his own environment department. Some of you have read the first page of the Redland City Bulletin (RCB), which was actually the first page of their paper this week (22/7/20). Last week the RCB was surrounded in 36 pages of pure advertising. The front page article is titled "Toondah appeal... launched" and in the second last paragraph Mr Dolan Hayes, the communications manager for Walker Corporation, states that "the ACF should respect the robust process and allow the best science to determine the project." I don't want to dampen Mr Hayes words with a wet sponge but in the seven years since this proposal for Toondah was introduced there has not been a robust process and even councillors are kept in the dark by "commercial in confidence." Cr Paul Golle stated in the RCB that the binding agreement they signed with Walker Corp has the potential to send the Council bankrupt. The science has already been determined and the conclusion of the Federal Environment Department in 2018 was that it is "clearly unacceptable" because it would involve the dredging of 42 hectares (100 acres) of the Ramsar protected shorebird zone. That could send some shorebird species (eg. Eastern Curlew) into extinction. So much for a robust process. See more

12.01.2022 Here is another video clip of orangutans enjoying themselves in the Sepilok National Park Sanctuary, where they can come and go as they please.

11.01.2022 If you're looking for a shark experience with an adrenaline rush I have twice been with Calypso shark dives and they are as safe as you can get when you're in a cage while 3 m and 4 m Great Whites are checking you out from the wild blue. Some of these shots were taken by me and others by Calypso staff. They are located at Port Lincoln at the bottom of South Australia.

10.01.2022 I recently retired my tourism and field education trips in the Redlands, which had run successfully for 12 years. I opted out of the Tourism Section of RCC in 2012, well before any of the current crop of councillors were elected. I found that the Tourism Section was holding Tourism breakfasts and luncheons, usually charged at $41 per person. The food was fine but the meetings did nothing for boosting business. The last Tourism breakfast I attended was in 2012 at Indigiscapes ...and Mayor Melva Hobson's photo was shown in the top right hand corner of the invitation, however, Melva knew nothing about it. It was organised by Melanie Moloney and was promoting a local solicitor's business in Capalaba. On this occasion the breakfast was free but the meeting was simply to advertise the solicitor's services to all the tourism businesses. I invited my mother and towards the end of the hour she commented - "son, this is just like a time share promotion and has nothing to do with any tourism business." Hopefully the Tourism Section of RCC has since improved. See more

06.01.2022 Beware, someone named Andrea Wilson has hacked into my fb account.

02.01.2022 We need to protect our marine coast from greedy oil companies who would threaten our unique wildlife if they are given half a chance.

01.01.2022 Keep in mind that a healthy marine ecosystem involves the shallow nursery areas as well as the deeper marine waters. Remember what happened to the local fisheries about 10-12 years ago in Gladstone, Qld when the State Government decided to dredge the harbour. It stirred up the heavy metals from the bottom and this resulted in fish with severe lesions to their bodies. Commercial fisheries in the area were forced out of business and the marine ecosystem suffered for years.
