25.01.2022 Thanks for your kind enquiriesmy initial Ocrevus infusions are done, and nothing to report, no adverse reactions. As for any benefits, I won't know until March. But something newour neighbour's bees have been descending en masse onto our birdbath, the shallow one. It must be the only accessible water source within range. They mostly cluster around the water's edge, but some intrepid ones skim the surface, and some dip right in. [ 256 more words ] https://jennifersevern.com.au/fuelling-the-fire/
25.01.2022 After Council connected Quaama to the Brogo Dam supply in 1984, they sent a truck through the village collecting everyone's rainwater tanks. 'You won't be needing these anymorelet us do you a favour and remove them for you!' They needed people to pay for household water nowthe last thing they wanted was people collecting their own. But by the time we built our new house in 2008, the NSW Government was offering rebates for every new tank connected to toilets or washing machines. 23.01.2022 I wheeled down to the road at 5.30 am, moved by the concept of the 'driveway dawn service'. I wasn't sure if my Bermaguee Street neighbours would be partaking, and when I reached the street, mine was the only light. So I headed up to the cenotaph in case there'd been a social-distancing rebellion no-one. But I knew that Helen and Peter Taylor would be out the front of their place in Bega Street with candles and wreath and a radio. 22.01.2022 Every year in late August, convoys of semi-trailers converge on two big almond farms outside Mildura on the Murray River. They have journeyed from Queensland, South Australia and from all over NSW and Victoria. The cargo? Bee hives. 'Almond growers have built a landscape that's very good at creating almonds but it doesn't have the ingredients that these insects have evolved with'. 22.01.2022 Write what you know, they sayand I know night. Jet black, dark of the moon night. Crisp shadows on bright, silvered lawn night. Still night of hush and mopoke hoot. Howling night of seethe and crash. Doona-burrowing, extra blanket, bed-beanie night. Night of sweat and swelter, sheet-tangle, turn and tumble. On a steamy summer night, 4.12 gleams greenly at the bedside. [ 191 more words ] https://jennifersevern.com.au/the-writer-stripped-bare/
16.01.2022 It was my dirty secret for a while. Then I mentioned it to a friend who confessed to a similar habit. And slowly they came out of the woodworkother addicts. Or aficionados. In any case, many friends and neighbours with a predilection for jigsaw puzzles. [ 532 more words ] http://jennifersevern.com.au/puzzling/
15.01.2022 Al salam Alaikum. Peace be upon you. And peace be upon all of us For many of us, the memory of the terrorist shooting in Christchurch in March will always be ...softened by the grace with which New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern applied herself when addressing Parliament, Christchurch families and her nation. So it was more than apt that Rachel Colombo opened the vigil at Well Thumbed Books, Cobargo, on 13 April with her words. 12.01.2022 I've never been in jail, and I wasn't educated in a 20th-century British boarding school. So I'm not used to being referred to by my surname and it's a bit jarring reading the reviews of Long Road to Dry River on Goodreads. 'Severn is a master wordsmith' (thanks 'Lib Kilian'), 'Severn's writing encapsulates what is special and unique about memoir' (thanks, 'Tash'). 11.01.2022 Someone from the National Disability Insurance Scheme rang a couple of months ago. 'Good news!' she said. 'Funding for your wheelchair has been approved!' Well, great. Please forgive me for my mixed response to this news. There are days when I notice myself casting envious looks at people in wheelchairs. Pushing my wheelie walker around is tiring and difficult, and now and again, especially on uneven ground, I'm at risk of toppling over. [ 709 more words ] http://jennifersevern.com.au/denial/
11.01.2022 My first face-to-face interview! Bookchat with the lovely Linda Albertson of Bega Library.
10.01.2022 Hilary Mantel, on winning Bookers for her consecutive novels Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies, compared it to waiting for a bus: 'You wait 20 years for a Booker prize and then two come along at once.' Two major events, years in the build-up, are culminating for me in the next couple of months. [ 278 more words ] http://jennifersevern.com.au/my-two-buses/
10.01.2022 Our neighbour Hanno finds the walk to school arduous. So when he goes to pick up his big sister Eve in the afternoon, Jens takes him in the wheelbarrow. And sometimes after a big day at kindy, Eve hops in too for a lift home. Jens and Tash used to have one of those Dutch bicycles with a child capsule on the front of it. 09.01.2022 Who could have known, back in December when I started the immune-suppressant Ocrevus treatment for my MS, that a pandemic was brewing? I've been feeling particularly exposed and even asked people at my March book launch (more on that later) to refrain from the usually obligatory hugs at the occasion. But now, a month later, I have the results from my latest blood test. [ 833 more words ] https://jennifersevern.com.au/an-interesting-time-to-launc/
08.01.2022 1.30 am, New Year's Eve. The FiresNearMe text: Put your plan into action. I hear a vehicle down on the road, coming in from the forest. Then another. Soon, a constant stream. 2 am. We're backing down the driveway, in two cars. I have the dogs, food for them, water, my walker, and the Mechanic has my scooter, our documents bag and the go-bag, which has been sitting in a corner for weeks. 02.01.2022 I was buying a Christmas present at Candelo Books in Bega last week. Marianna the owner was at the counter. Marianna: Hi Jen! I heard you have a book coming out. Me: Yes, soon ... but how did you know? Marianna: Oh, someone came in asking for it ...
02.01.2022 It's good to be reminded every now and then.
01.01.2022 An update on an old post that got some attention -- about that builder who invoiced me $550 for a quote, which he said I could claim on the NDIS. Well, after a ...few months of enquiries, it turns out I can't claim for a quote. So I'm out of pocket $550, but, weirdly, I'm happy. I'm happy that the NDIS isn't paying dodgy providers to spend half an hour quoting for a home modification job and charging huge amounts for it. If you are on the NDIS, or have friends on it, spread the word! Here's the original post: http://jennifersevern.com.au/the-grinning-tradie-or-if-the/ See more
