25.01.2022 Welcome to the fleet, a new truck ready for your next delivery!

24.01.2022 Timing is Key!! To get the most out of the little space that we have its best to be prepared and plan out the right crops that will grow and produce faster than the rest. A great idea is to use or buy plants that are already 1 month old because it can save a whole lot of time and effort, all we need to do is transplant from the pot to your garden bed and most of the work is done. By choosing the right type of plants we can get much more out of the space limitations, we don...t want one slow-growing plant hogging up all the soil which will only produce one or two crops for us. Having fast-maturing varieties can give us kilos of produce, for instance, following an early crop of leaf lettuce with a fast-maturing corn, and then grow more greens or overwintered garlic will give us so much food, all within a single growing season. The most important thing to remember when trying this technique is to also be on top of our gardening. We need to be as fast as the fast-maturing plants, making sure we always feed and replenish the top layer of soil each time we plant a new plant and give our babies plenty of water. Happy gardening!

24.01.2022 ITS TIME, to plant new flowers and scrubs!!! Now comes our favour step of spring. Over the last few weeks, we have finished the groundwork for our gardens, cleaning them up and making room for NEW and exciting plants. Spring is the season for life and a wonderful time to plant new flowers and scrubs. Some of our favourites are:... - Daffodils - Hyacinths - Tulip These flowers produce strong colours and completely light up our gardens which is what we want to see when we are out in the yard, the best thing is they are easy to grow!!

23.01.2022 Early Autumn is a really good time to think about feeding our gardens and our lawns. We here at DTE usually use slow-release fertilisers because they save our backs and gives us more time to do the things we love. Slow-release feeds allow us to control when our plants get to feed and are specifically designed to reduce waste from overfeeding and environment leakage. There are some amazing products for both garden and lawns that will help take at least one task off our minds ...during the start of the season, these feeds are usually good for 3 months at a time and only takes roughly 10 mins of work to spread in the needed areas In our book thats not bad at all. We do stock Scotts Osmocotes for gardens and Lawn Solution pellets for the lawns but its best to do a bit of research because gardens and lawn are unique and will need different types of care.

23.01.2022 This holiday season, and as the year comes to an end, we are look back with appreciation for your loyalty. We also look forward moving into the New Year together. Happy New Year!

22.01.2022 UP, UP AND AWAY: Grow climbing plants to capitalise on space We know that when ground space is limited we need to explore new frontiers! Its time to take to the skies. Growing climbing plants will save us using up the limited ground area we have to plant with the added bonus of bringing in those lush jungle vibes to your garden. ... Tomatoes, pole beans, peas, squash, and melons are all great examples of vines and vertical growing plants, not only do they save space but they can also save on harvesting time, and reduce fungal diseases because of where the fruits appear. Happy gardening!!!!

20.01.2022 We wish everyone a happy Australia Day, stay safe and let us all reflect on the past both good and bad because "we are one but we are many".

20.01.2022 No Space, No Worries! Space-saving raised garden beds with rich soil are what we need! Not having space or living on a property that doesnt allow for many alterations doesnt mean you cant have a garden. By using a raised garden bed or pots we can achieve something that would resemble a traditional garden, in fact, studies show we can be FOUR times more fruitful with plants grown in raised garden beds compared to traditional gardens within the same area. ... This is because we would use a rich soil that is in a constant loose state (perfect for roots) plus the advantage of having a smaller area to manage is time-saving in the sense of weeding, watering, harvesting, and feeding. Happy Gardening!!

20.01.2022 For the best yield: plant crops in triangles instead of rows!! Planting can be difficult because if we plant our crops too far apparent we are wasting what little space we have but if we plant them too tightly we could risk starving them or not giving the plants enough room to fulling grow. From Research the best shape to plant in is a triangle because you can fit 10-14% more plants in using this method. Its a tricky balance between getting more plants and a good yield but when done right it, we can be very fruitful. Happy gardening!!!

19.01.2022 Huge shout out to @Malcolm Ingram who has done an amazing job with this outdoor giant chessboard, using DTE products and some help from one of our staff members. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php

18.01.2022 Mulch! Mulch!! Mulch!!! Spring is the perfect time to refresh areas of our household, from cleaning out unwanted clutter in our homes to preparing our gardens for the sunny months ahead. Refreshing our mulches is a very important task to add to our to-do lists, it helps to keep that moisture blanket from our winter mulching working to its full potential throughout the following months.... Mulches provide an amazing covering to prevent the growth of weeds, keeping all the water in the soil for longer and helps stop soil erosion. The best thing about mulch is that there are plenty to choose from that can match just about any garden big or small.

17.01.2022 Autumn is the season to start pruning back some of our flowers and plants, to get rid of any dead or dying leaves and branches. Giving our gardens a good cut back will allow new shoots to grow with ease and can also help with pest reduction as most of these problem makers prefer the dying branches to burrow into. Here are some of the plants that need our attention in Autumn: - To promote a final autumnal flush of blooms prune back or dead-head (remove dead flowers) roses... - Cut back pelargoniums and fuchsias by about two-thirds - Cut down herbaceous perennials that have finished flowering - Tidy up any evergreen shrubs See more

13.01.2022 Coming into autumn its time to start gathering the plants you want to grow over the season. Although the best time to actually plant is mid-march there is no harm in preparing instead of rushing at the end and missing the date completely. We have listed our favourite types of plants and vegetables for Autumn below: - Strawberries - Cabbage - Cauliflower - Broad beans... - Daffodils - Pansy - Bottlebrush (great for the Aussie environment) - Lillypilly - Grevillea See more

13.01.2022 Preparing our garden for the next season... Now is the time to clean up and replenish our soils with new nurturance and food to help our current and future plants grow. Some plants such as tomatoes can be greedy feeders and will usually use up all the goodness in the soil which doesnt leave much room for any new plants coming through. Adding a fresh layer of high nurturance soil is the best start any plant can ask for, we can even add in manures like cow, mushroom compost or... even composting old plants that have lived out their lives to get the same result. Just remember weeds will be using this heat to germinate and spread so keep an eye out for these unwanted guests. AND dont forget to keep up the watering as well, we are in for some really hot days but please keep within the water restrictions, it may be harder to keep everything alive but ultimately its better for everyone.

12.01.2022 LEST WE FORGET For those brave who gave their lives so we could live ours

12.01.2022 In this field, we all dream about having the perfect lawn, one without weeds or patches. But all good things need to be worked on before we can see the results. Here are a few tips on lawn care in Autumn: This season is a good time to aerate your lawn, using a fork to poke holes through the surface. Doing this will help water and fertiliser penetrate the roots plus it is great prevention of thatch. Thatch (a built-up layer of dead roots) is a common problem in most lawns th...at havent really had proper attention over the years, it can cause problems with watering and feeding as the thick layer prevents anything from being absorbed underneath. As well as aerating the soil removing this thatch layer should be done in this season, either cutting it out with a spade or using a heavy rake to break it up will do the trick. It is also a good time to tackle the lawn weeds as well in the cooler months as it can be physically demanding, and we dont really want to be working too hard in the summer heat. Weeds can be removed by hand or by using a lawn weed killer which protects the lawn but kills the weeds!

12.01.2022 Wishing all the Dads a Happy Fathers Day !!

12.01.2022 Still stuck in Isolation and wanted to improve your day to day life a little? Here are a few ideas to inspirer any new or old green thumbs: 1) Plant Sunflowers, these plants are relatively easy to grow, bright and attract our natural wildlife right to your back yard 2) Try starting a mini veg garden, space isnt an issue here and you can easily grow herbs and some vegetables out of small to medium pots such as tomatoes, beans, and even onions.... 3) With the cooler months about to hit its a great opportunity to clean up your lawns, feed, and weed with a good mow can make a house look a thousand times better. 4) Stop putting off cleaning. Get the hoes and an outdoor broom and get scrubbing. Patios, fences, decks, and even bricks, once you are finished your yard is guaranteed to look amazing, it will make you feel amazing and now you have a new video conference location. 5) People arent allowed to visit but native birds are, but added simple items like a birdhouse, birdbath or bird feeder you can make new friends in no time. Remember to stay safe and motivated in these strange times. Happy Gardening!!

11.01.2022 Create planting space out of thin air!! "HOW?!?!" we hear you ask Simple.. Round out the soil in your beds... Having smaller garden beds doesnt mean we need to skimp on space, getting into the theme of Halloween and also a great tip all year round is to mound our soil like something spooky is buried underneath. Creating an arc of soil in our garden beds can actually create more space for planting. Lets do the math; say we have a 1.5 meter garden bed and we mound the soil in the middle we could gain an extra 30 centimetres of planting area!! When we are limited by space we could use as much as we can get! and some plants actually prefer the runoff such as lettuce and spinach so its a win-win situation. Happy gardening!!

07.01.2022 May Peace, Joy, Hope, and Happiness be yours during this Holiday Season and throughout the New Year. From the staff at DTE Sand and Soil

06.01.2022 If you are going stir crazy staying at home in self-isolation, our personal tip for you is to either START or continue to maintain a garden (or even a house plant). Research has shown that tending to something more fragile than ourselves (for example a plant) allows us to connect to a more primal and nurturing state of mind which actually reduces stress, helps with our moods and even improves our mental health. Here are some great reasons to be gardening in our worlds curren...t situation: - It gives us something productive to do with our time - Its a great reason to leave the house - Its great for the environment - It gives us something beautiful to look at every morning - It helps with depression and the feeling of isolation - The whole family can get involved - We can create our own food source (nothing beats fruit and veg that we have grown ourselves) Just because we must practice social isolation doesnt mean we need to stay confined to the four walls of the house, we still need to spend time outside and even for the more cautious people out there our backyards are pretty safe. If you have any questions or need any help with your gardens give our friendly staff a call on 02 9629 2000 and we would be more than happy to chat!

05.01.2022 Just a friendly reminder that we are closed from Good Friday through to Easter Monday, and we re-open on Tuesday 14th. We hope you have a wounder weekend and that you stay safe in these trying times. Happy Easter everyone!... From all the staff at Down to Earth Sand and Soil

04.01.2022 Team Effort for the win! Humans work better in teams but plants can benefit from it too. Growing compatible plants in the same area can help to reduce weeds, pests and encourage healthy growth. An example of a great combo is basil and tomatoes, they great together in sauces AND in the garden too. Happy Gardening!!

03.01.2022 "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them." "Lest we Forget"

03.01.2022 Rain is great but too much rain can lead to our yards flooding. If you have notices areas that do pool water especially on your lawn here are tips to help solve this problem: 1) Use topsoil to level out any sloping points so that the water doesnt run and gather in one location 2) Planting plants and trees near problem areas can help soak up the excess water, look for plants such as ferns, shrubs, and any small trees.... 3) If the flooding is near a flower bed, using non treated mulch can help absorb some water but be careful as too much water can cause the mulch to be pushed out of the intended area. 4) Add more drainage around hard surfaces like paths and driveways so the runoff is captured and doesnt flow onto your lawn. As always if you need any advice or products feel free to give us a call on 02 9629 2000 and one of our friendly staff will be happy to help you.

02.01.2022 Australian Bushfire Relief As you all know Australia is in a bad shape now with all the bushfires and we are sure, like us, you have contributed to the cause. We just wanted to take a moment to say how proud and honored we are to have such brave firefighters, volunteers and overall community in Australia. Our hearts go out to the victims that have been affected including the animals and plants.... If you are yet to join the bandwagon and looking for a way to help there are many outlets that will be happy to see your help, for example, adopt a Koala from the WWF. Here are some more direct ways in which to help and registered charities supporting our firies, the bushfire victims, our wildlife and affected regions: Red Cross Disaster Recovery & Relief: The Red Cross supports a variety of efforts such as supporting people at evacuation centres and providing emergency assistance like cash grants to people who have lost their homes. Vinnies Bushire Appeal: helps provide food, clothing, and money that bushfire victims may need to pay their bills. Salvation Army Disaster Appeal: is providing crucial support at the evacuations zones as required, specifically providing food to first-line responders and evacuees, as well as any other support needed. NSW Rural Fire Service: you can either donate straight to the NSW RFS or to your local Rural Fire Brigade to support volunteer firefighters. Country Fire Authority VIC: like the NSW RFS, you can donate either to a specific brigade or provide a general donation. South Australian Emergency Relief Funds: this link outlines a number of donation options to help the victims, firies, and wildlife affected by the recent fires on Kangaroo Island and Adelaide Hills. WIRES: NSW Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service (WIRES) rescues and cares for animals and is seeking donations for volunteer carers and rescuers that are inundated with them amid the bushfires. Wildlife Victoria: for those wanting to assist the recovery of native animals affected by the bushfires, donate to Wildlife Vics appeal. WIRES is NSW based only and has raised considerably more than their VIC counterparts. Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park: the fire-ravaged island has seen a huge loss of wildlife and the wildlife park is now experiencing an influx of injured animals of which they need urgent assistance with treating and rehabilitating. In addition to the listed options, and when planning your next trip or a quick getaway, why not consider visiting and staying at one of these communities or destinations which have been so affected in what is their typically busiest holiday time. They are all beautiful places and the businesses and communities that have suffered will be so thankful to receive your holiday dollars! We appreciate you taking the time to read and hope that you can help out in any way, shape or form.

02.01.2022 Spring is just around the corner and now, while it is still cold, is a good time to start preparing. Here are a few steps to get a good start in September: 1) Aerating the top layer of soil in gardens 2) Adding manure or food scraps through this now turned. Letting this break down over then next few weeks will help bring back anything nutrients that was lost. 3) Control any weeds now so they dont bother you in spring... 4) Collect any seeds that you want to grown, dont leave it too late!! As always if you need anything for your garden even some advice please give us a call and we would be happy to help! 02 9629 2000
