22.01.2022 Dangerous words... (With acknowledgement to NSC)

20.01.2022 Dashboard displays need to be minimized while the car is in motion. Only the essentials should be accessible. Driving is a complex task just negotiating traffic without the added distraction of playing with the settings.

19.01.2022 Managing Driving Test Nerves Test day nerves can compromise even the most competent learner’s ability to drive safely. This is because when you become nervous, the nerves take up valuable cognitive ability. Put simply, nerves mess with your ability to concentrate. This nervousness and anxiety are related to the ‘fight, flight or freeze’ response a biological reaction that evolved to help us protect ourselves from danger. This takes resources away from the frontal part of ou...Continue reading

10.01.2022 Good advice from the Australian Driver Trainers Association

09.01.2022 Food for thought from the BBC on driverless cars. Are they always going to keep us safe? http://www.bbc.com/news/business-41052434#

07.01.2022 Mirror Setup Have you ever started changing lanes and suddenly there is a loud blast from a car’s horn? You’ve checked your mirrors and hopefully had a quick glance back over your shoulder. It looked safe to make the move but you simply didn’t see the car driving up next to you?... Guess what? You’ve just experienced the effects of inefficient car mirror setup. Conventional driver training teaches you to set up your side mirrors so that you can just see the rear door handle or back of the car. The top image shows a typical view, in the right hand side mirror, with conventional mirror setup. The lamp post and pillars (circled in red) are located towards the centre of the mirror. Notice there aren’t any other cars to be seen? For much improved visibility try creating a panorama with your mirrors. This is achieved by firstly setting up your main rear view mirror so that you can see clearly out of the back windscreen. Seated in your normal driving position, look in the main rear view mirror and make a mental note of the object that is visible closest to the right hand edge of the mirror. Now adjust your right hand side mirror so that the object that you previously noted, now appears to the extreme left of the side mirror (i.e. closest to the car). Repeat this for the left hand mirror with the object visible closest to the left hand edge of the main mirror, appearing to the extreme right hand side of the left side mirror (once again closest to the car). You have just created a panoramic view! The lower image shows the view, in the right hand side mirror, with the mirror adjusted for a panoramic view. There is no longer an overlap between the main and side mirrors. You will notice that the lamp post and pillars (circled in green) have now moved much closer to the left hand side of the mirror. You may also notice that there is a car on the driveway on the far right of the mirror. With conventional mirror setup we could not have seen the car. The panoramic mirror setup allows a car driving up in the lane next to you to remain visible in your side mirror, until it is pretty much right next to your driver’s side window. A quick (shoulder check) glance to your immediate right or left will ensure that you will see the car, once it isn’t visible in the side mirror. BIG advantage of this is that your shoulder check no longer requires you to look back over your shoulder the blind spot has been significantly reduced. Looking back over your shoulder, whilst travelling forward, also means that you aren’t looking at the road ahead of you! Hope this tip has helped and, as always, your comments are welcome.

06.01.2022 How to Choose a Driving School Learning to drive can be scary with all those other crazy drivers out there, but it should be fun! Stress levels rise further when a well-meaning parent or supervisor starts yelling at the Learner Driver. What started out as a fun learning exercise quickly turns into a nightmare for both Learner and the driving supervisor. Ring any bells? This is where the services of an accredited Professional Driving Instructor come into play. The Professional...Continue reading
