12.01.2022 Strongyles Sleep over Summer There is a topic I’ve been wanting to tell you all about for a while now, however it is most relevant NOW, during our hot, dry mont...hs (also, Long Post Alert). This is because this is a story about how the climate has a huge impact on the strongyle (small round worms) lifecycle. Worms are actually LARGE creatures, they are animals just like the livestock they infect, and their lifecycle is just as dependant on the weather and seasons as any other animal species, especially as part of their life is free-living on pasture. Some strongyle species have an ability to undergo arrested development, or hypobiosis (hypo = low, biosis = life) where the immature larve burrow into the lining of the intestine and ‘hibernate’. They are then referred to as ‘encysted larvae’. Species of strongyles that are known to do this are those in the small strongyle group that infect horses (*Cyathostome spp.), and brown stomach worms in cattle/sheep/goats (*Ostertagia/Teladorsagia spp.). In a normal lifecycle, once ingested, larvae will mature from their L3 stage to L4, then to adult worms. An adult worm’s main job is to lay eggs. However, if the climate is hot and dry, eggs will dry out and die before they can become infective. Therefore when a larvae is at it L4 stage it has to make a decision. Mature and waste energy producing eggs that will die in the summer heat, or encyst in the lining of the intestine to wait until autumn, when it is wetter and cooler and more conducive to egg survival? While a larvae is encysted it is unlikley to be causing any trouble in fact, larvae can remain encysted for weeks, months, years even. It is when it leaves hibernation that the problems start. They will leave hibernation as the nights start to cool, and weather becomes wetter, usually in late summer or early autumn. Imagine (in a bad scenario) 100,000 larvae a few millmetres long, crawling out of pimple like cysts on the lining of your intestine. This can happen all at once (acute) or over a period of time (chronic). For cattle farmers the emergence of Ostertagia worms from hibernation is known as Type II Ostertagiosis and is common in cows/heifers that are autumn calving. Symptoms include diarrhoea, loss of condition and dehydration. In horses the emergence of larvae from hibernation is known as larval cyathostominosis and can have symptoms from the mild such as loss of condition, loose manure to the severe such as colic and possibly death in young, heavily burdened horses. The trickiest things about encysted strongyles is that they are impossible to diagnosis (no egg laying, no eggs to detect via FEC) and very difficult to treat. Few wormers work against encysted larvae as the cyst protects them from drugs. For horses, encysted larvae can be treated for using a 5 day course of Fenbendazole or a single dose of moxidectin. The moxidectin is a safer and kinder option, and results is less inflammation fenbendazole will cause inflammation of the cysts as it kills the larvae within them. However, even the efficacy of drugs against encysted strongyles is not proven to be 100%. (To count encysted larvae you have to do an autopsy. You cannot autopsy the same animal before and after it has been treated with a drug.) In most cases encysted larvae cause problems in young animals (under 3-4 years old), and so management is key to preventing large burdens of encysted larvae occuring. For young horses keep on top of a regular worming regime (with FEC, of course) with the appropriate worming drench for the time of the year. Additionally, keep on top of paddock hygeine in the spring months when egg shedding and larval contamination is at it highest it is during spring that the larvae that will become encysted are picked up. Also, avoid being trigger-happy with your worming if the thought of encysted larvae frightens you. By worming you will remove a stable adult population of worms, giving an empty intestine for all the encysted larvae to move into, sometimes suddenly. Therefore, over summer the best thing to do is avoid worming all together and wait until autumn for adult horses. Then you can far more easily kill the larvae AFTER they have left hibernation. And just a finishing note on climatic locations: For temperate southern Australia with our dry summers and wet winters, larvae will hibernate over summer and come out in autumn. In tropical climates, they will hibernate over the dry winter. For cold climates (like Europe) they will hibernate over the cold, freezing winters and emerge in spring. So there you have it. Turns out that worms can tell the weather just as well as we can. Which I find pretty crazy, considering they live inside another creature!
