19.01.2022 Growing things helps the soil to absorb water and reduces runoff. The nutrients stay in the soil.

17.01.2022 The 2020 Annual General Meeting for Duncraig Edible Garden will be held on Saturday 1st August at 10 am in the forecourt of Duncraig Library. The meeting usually takes less than 30 minutes. We will hear reports from the current committee and elect a new committee. Current financial members of DEG are invited to nominate for any executive role or for general committee positions. The executive positions are Chair, Vice, Secretary and Treasurer. ... If you are not currently a financial member, you are very welcome to apply so that you can vote and stand for election to the committee. Membership and Nomination forms will be available at DEG on (DEG day) Saturday mornings 4th and 18th of July. Check with Kath to find out if your membership is current. (Membership is for each calendar year) Please bring something to share for morning tea or for the "share the harvest table". (The Library will be opening on Saturdays again from 4th July, so we will also have access to the loos, hooray!) We look forward to seeing you. DEG Committee

15.01.2022 Hover flies were abundant at the garden this weekend. Look carefully and you will see the difference between them and wasps

15.01.2022 We have broad beans with 3 different coloured flowers. Scarlet, chocolate and white.

14.01.2022 This week (1st February) at DEG we will do some gardening as usual, and about 10am, we will talk about planting in the garden for Bunuru, the hottest time of the year. The Noongar seasons don't rely on a calendar, but on observing the changes in the environment. Bunuru is a time for fishing, and white flowers on gum trees (Usually this is February and March if you are going by dates) You might like to read a little more about Bunuru at http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2015/02/23/4185361.htm #ObserveAndInteract #BiraktoBunuru

13.01.2022 24th March 2020 Corona Virus/ COVID-19 Update for DEG Hi Everyone, In response to changing circumstances, the DEG open day planned for this Saturday the 28th March has been canceled for now. Other Events scheduled on the calendar will also not be held.... Take sensible precautions and keep gardening. Some gardening will continue on Saturdays at DEG until conditions change. You are welcome to come and join us if you are well and want to work and learn, but please be sensible. *Keep yourself informed and abide by the social distancing measures announced by the government for the common good. *The Library has closed, so there will be no toilet facilities available at the garden until further notice. Keep gardening at home! You could save seeds from foods that you eat. Plant them to grow seedlings at the right time for each kind of plant. A good guide for Perth conditions can be found at www.greenlifesoil.com/when-to-plant-guide-perth Garden Well, DEG Committee

12.01.2022 End of Bunuru 2020 information regarding *DEG open day and *coronavirus Dear Duncraig Edible Garden Community,... *The next DEG day, Saturday 28th March 9-12am has been advertised as an Open Day. People from other community gardens are invited to come and visit DEG. This is hoped to be the first of a series of open days and events in various places around Perth, with one in each Noongar Season. At the end of Bunuru, the hottest time of the year, it will be interesting to see how well our garden is thriving. We look forward to showing people around and sharing our stories as well as hearing stories of their community gardens. Wear a hat and sun smart clothing. Bring your own mug and something to add to the share the harvest table, or maybe seeds or cuttings from your garden. We look forward to seeing you on the day. *We will watch the evolving situation with regard to the Covid-19 outbreak. Duncraig Edible Garden is an unfenced outdoor space and is always open to the public. Suddenly it seems more important than ever for people to learn to grow food! We will continue to meet until we are told it is not safe to do so. The garden will need volunteers to continue all the normal work and provide a place for people to learn. This is an opportunity to take action in the face of what might otherwise be a scary time. We will grow food and community. Act, Belong, Commit. Be social and keep a safe distance (1.5m) from each other. Please come as you usually would to help us look after our community and garden. Take note of the following requests for the garden, in line with government advice: If you have traveled overseas during the last 14 days, please stay home. If you or a family member are unwell (even slightly), please stay home. Cover your coughs and sneezes, Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. Especially between gardening and morning tea. Please bring your own gardening gloves and mug (instead of using our shared ones) It is best if we don't bring home made foods to share at the garden for now. Yummy though they are, they can provide a way for the virus to travel. If you test positive for Covid-19 and have been to the garden in the 14 days prior to your diagnosis, please notify the committee via email [email protected]

11.01.2022 Did you take part in the Pandemic gardening survey? Are you passionate about food, or food security? Duncraig Edible Garden is part of the Community Gardens Australia Network, and we are part of having food available in shared spaces which helps to improve food security and community wellbeing. This looks like an excellent discussion!

11.01.2022 The seasons are shifting. When the seasons are marked by changes in our environment, that is where we look! #ObserveAndInteract #BiraktoBunuru

11.01.2022 This week at DEG we will focus on watering and Mulching to help the garden continue to thrive during Bunuru, the hottest time of the year

06.01.2022 There are many ways that we can change the world for the better, and taking care of ourselves and of our needs is one of them. Just by growing our own salads or... herbs, or by harvesting apples from a nearby tree, we are reducing our reliance on chemical agriculture and on the industrial food system in general. One lettuce picked from your garden means that a different lettuce, raised in a monoculture with fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides, irrigation, desiccants, huge farm machinery, plastic packaging, transport, refrigeration and supermarket distribution centres didn't have to be purchased. And your lettuce will taste better, too Share below if you're out in the garden this week and loving it. #permacultureillustrator #gardeningismytherapy #homegrownveggies

05.01.2022 Plant some seeds, water, see the seedlings grow, harvest some and allow the best to go to seed. Collect those seeds, share them, and grow some more.

03.01.2022 Shade is up, summer's coming. Get the coarse waterwise mulch covering the soil between your plants soon, to shade the soil keeping it cool and allowing the soil microbes to survive. Make sure to check that it is coarse enough to let water through from the top! Adding mulch can mean water use is half or less to keep the soil moist at finger depth...and of course you are checking the moisture of you soil both before you water (does it need any?) And after (did it penetrate?)

01.01.2022 This Saturday we will be making a compost pile. Come down and see how.

01.01.2022 https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/foodgrowing If you haven't yet had your say, please do take a few minutes to answer this survey and give some information to tho...se who are putting together a case for more govt support for people growing food in urban spaces. It closes very soon (on the 15th I think), so get in now! See more
