25.01.2022 So many beautiful babies coming into care, if you find a baby possum please dont leave it. Get it to your nearest vet or carers asap
25.01.2022 Cats have some seriously needle sharp teeth and claws. So when cats play with, attack or carry any wildlife who come into contact with them, the results can be... devastating even if you cant see any damage at first. Cats claws and mouths often carry all sorts of bacteria, including Pasteurella multocida & Bartonella henselae which both thrive in low oxygen environments such as scratches and puncture wounds. These wounds can be tiny and hard to see through fur, scales or feathers. They often seal over very quickly, trapping the bacteria inside where it flourishes. Think of them as literally an injection of bacteria! These bacteria are also present in cats saliva (& dogs too!), so even without a puncture or scratch, any saliva that is left on their bodies & later ingested can infect them. If you find any wildlife that has been in contact with a cat (or is suspected to have been), it should immediately be brought in to a wildlife rehabilitation facility for antibiotic treatment, even if you cant see any injuries.
24.01.2022 Omg cuteness overload with the pygmies last night They are eating more and more flowers and becoming so much more active and independent Western Pygmy Possums

23.01.2022 People keep asking me for a group photo of the babies, but its absolutely impossible as they all wriggle, so here they are at midnight, just fed and taking themselves to their pouches and off to the intensive care incubator, all still doing really well and getting more adventurous, their tank is currently being set up just waiting for all the sticks and things to dry out so they dont go damp and moudly as this can make babies very sickly. These are western pygmy possums ... Ps if you want to see lots more videos check our insta stories Dont forget you can adopt most of our babies online too. If you find sick, injured or orphaned wildlife and its safe to do so you can take it to any vet, you will not be charged for this and they can find an appropriate carer. 23.01.2022 A Bullsbrook market gardener has been fined $18,000 with costs of $618 after satellite imagery showed he had illegally cleared approximately 8.8 hectares of nat...ive vegetation. An application for a clearing permit had been made to the then Department of Environment and Conservation but was refused as the banksia woodland contained foraging habitat for the endangered Carnaby’s black cockatoo. Comments attributed to Environment Minister Stephen Dawson: "Adhering to decisions on clearing permit applications is vital to ensure that inappropriate clearing of native vegetation does not take place. "Clearing native vegetation after an application was refused is a serious matter as it undermines the integrity of Western Australia's environmental laws." https://www.mediastatements.wa.gov.au//Satellite-surveilla Photo for illustration purposes only.
22.01.2022 Check Pouches! Its joey season as well as being winter this means more kangaroos on the roads and more accidents are likely to happen. If you hit a kangaroo and it is not dead please call the wildcare helpline for assistance.... Heres how to check a pouch (also applies to possums) and what you can keep in your car to help save a life. (Car kits should contain a towel, pillow case, scissors, safety pin. Rubber gloves, spray paint, wet wipes, high vis vest, box or basket. A snap to activate heat pack is very handy too.) How to remove baby possum or joey from dead mothers pouch. If you find a dead or injured possum or kangaroo you should always check the pouch, joeys can survive for days slowly freezing and starving to death. Protect yourself by wearing a high vis vest and rubber gloves. You should never pull a baby off the teat. Young babies are permanently attached to the teat trying to pull the baby from the teat can damage the mouth. If the joey is still attached to the teat you can slide a safety pin into the teat and cut the teat off, the safety pin stops the joey from swallowing the teat, the joey will spit out the teat when its ready. To remove the joey you will need to get your hand under it and scoop it from under its bottom, never pull it by its limbs or tail, joeys are very delicate and get broken bones very easily. Once you have removed the baby from mothers pouch wrap the baby in the towel or pillow case. This is where you can use your spray paint to mark the adult so other drivers know its been checked. Place the baby in a basket, box or even down your shirt. (This is where a snap to activate heat pack is handy!) Do not feed or water the baby, do not take it out and handle it for pictures or pass it round the family. If you want to give this baby the best chance get it straight to your nearest vet or wildlife carer. Do not keep it overnight it will need specialist formula and constant regular heat immediately. 21.01.2022 We have had a very busy morning and Im currently on my 5th rescue, Tianis in the vets with another and Jill just had a pinky kangaroo dropped off. I have to admit these birds and their bright red eyes scare me abit like vampire birds Those dinosaur feet too
20.01.2022 Stop feeding wildlife
20.01.2022 This is Pippa a fledgling bird, it has a small amount of fluff but mostly feathers. Birds like Pippa are currently leaving their nests and learning to fly, they can only fly small distances so they are often just whining or crying on the ground, they don't need help or rescuing their parents are always close by trying to teach them to be independent and fly and feed themselves. They whine to keep their parents attention and beg for food, they can only flap a few meters and need to rest to build up their strength. They need us to keep our pets and children under control and let them be birds. They don't need rescuing they just need some space
20.01.2022 Planting is still on for this morning with the rain. It doesnt take long to warm up once you get started. Hope to see you there. Join us for a community pla...nting day in our local reserve. Quedjinmia reserve is located next to the dunsborough library. Its a special place for many and I hope you can help it. Saturday 13 June 9 am to 11 am meet @ Naturaliste Community Centre carpark See more
20.01.2022 More and more people are stopping to check possum pouches as well as kangaroo pouches, as a result more babies are being saved Please check pouches, tell your friends, dont leave these babies to starve and freeze alone. Give them a chance
20.01.2022 Pygmies having lunch Karen was in a bad mood from being woken up and took herself back to bed, Runty and Pugsley finishing it off while big fat GeeGee and Steve observe with their full tummies
19.01.2022 Some of the babies have opened their teeny tiny eyes, look at those whiskers
19.01.2022 Little GeeGee is queen of her jungle, first in the food and still the boss of the gang, babies are getting more and more interested in flowers which is great because they need to learn to feed themselves and not depend on milk or substitutes in the wild Those ears
19.01.2022 New tshirts just in time for Christmas, range of colours, men's, womens and kids sizes available. Kids $25.00 Adults $30.00 Limited number available. Small logo on the front and large on the back
18.01.2022 Darling little Runty is still going strong, despite being half the weight of GeeGee, she gets extra attention when feeding to ensure she gets enough food otherwise the fatties take over and she would get squished in the stampede Pugsley also gets additional time and attention as he has a little pug nose and struggles to keep up. All the babies are doing very well and gaining weight nicely.
18.01.2022 Did you know feeding native birds can alter natural behaviour and harm their health? It creates an unhealthy dependence on humans and the food is often not suit...ed to their physiology. Additionally, it can draw birds into unsafe areas where they may be predated on. Feeding native birds without a licence is now an offence under the new Biodiversity Conservation Act. Feeding commercially available bird seed can also spread weeds and may be a blend that isnt suitable to native birds. Instead, you can play your part by having native plants and shrubs in your garden, so birds have access to natural food sources. More info on having a bird friendly garden is available at https://perthzoo.wa.gov.au//do-your-p/bird-friendly-garden. Read more about feeding native birds in the winter edition of LANDSCOPE magazine, out now in newsagents and online at shop.dbca.wa.gov.au
18.01.2022 Its been a busy kangaroo week, please keep checking pouches
17.01.2022 Baby Karen and her wonky little ear are doing amazing she is still an angel Steve has settled down abit but still has to be fed first because he is still a hangry boy GeeGee has always been quiet, she is abit of a messy eater and likes to get her little hands involved and splash the milk Pugsley with the squashed nose is coping alot better, hes very slow to feed but once he gets going hes a trooper And darling teeny tiny Runty maybe small but shes always the fir...st out and most adventurous. All babies now have their eyes open and some have their ears out now too. They are definitely growing and getting fluffier as their coats come in. So far apart from being hard work and driving me abit batty they are all thriving and doing exactly what they should be.
17.01.2022 Lazy Sunday for Chickpea he has no interest in getting up unless theirs food involved
16.01.2022 Reminder to volunteers on tree planting this Sunday 21st. Please see poster attached. Thank you.
16.01.2022 Thanks so much Woolworths Busselton for donating food and bird food to our babies. Spring is here and although I might have been quiet on Facebook it doesnt mean our carers havny been kept very busy. Joey season is full force with Baby possums seeping in everyday. Please check pouches
15.01.2022 Massive well done to our carer Robyn for safely getting this mum and her bubba out of a chimney flute in Busselton yesterday along with our other carer Tiani they were assessed for injuries and rehydrated before being released back outside with a nice new home Team work makes the dream work, well done ladies
13.01.2022 Release night for this baby who came in 7 weeks ago with severely burnt feet! He was very glad to be home and ran straight up the tree
13.01.2022 Massive thanks as always to the wonderful team Dunsborough Veterinary Hospital who are always so helpful and kind to our wildlife
13.01.2022 Stopped to check 3 big beautiful kangaroos today, all 3 hit very close together and dragged off the road, the poor baby was left in mummas pouch nobody reported it or took it to a vet to be saved. I hope it didnt suffer long Please stop and check kangaroos and possums pouches for babies especially at this time of year when they have all just bred. If you find a pinky and are going to remove it please please be so careful and gentle, their little legs break easily, scoop it from under its bottom instead. Get it to a vet or carer ASAP, keep it dark and warm.
13.01.2022 What to look for when you are checking a kangaroo on the side of the road; 1) Both the males and females have cloaca's. A sheath that covers their reproductive ...organs. You cannot determine the sex of a kangaroo by looking at the cloaca. (Unless the male has his penis out which often happens upon death) 2) You must lift the leg/s to see the underbelly 3) In winter when their coats are lush it can be hard to spot a pouch and/or testicles. The pouch, if not obviously protruding with a baby may be flush against the stomach and hidden by fur. A male will have his testicles drawn up into his under-body for warmth 4) Run you hand along to locate the pouch and/or the testicles 5) A pouch must be checked regardless of size. A tiny little living baby the size of a jelly bean could be in there If you are not sure, PLEASE phone a wildlife group like Wildlife Victoria: (03) 8400 7300. If a baby is attached to a teat, please do not attempt to pull if off the teat before speaking to a wildlife carer or rescuer. Or, leave the baby for experienced rescuers to attend to These are common points our local rescuer Kerry deals with daily when speaking to beautiful people that stop and check. People see the cloaca and assume the ancient one is a male. This is not the case. Thank you to everyone that stops and checks. You offer love, dignity and a chance to save a life. Maybe even two! <3 For more information: https://kangaroorangers.com/
12.01.2022 So last night for the first time the babies started climbing Usually they stay in their nest, I get them out to eat and they make their way back to the nest, last night Karen and GeeGee had a good run around and play before supper. They even showed some interest in their flowers for the first time. I cannot believe how much these babies grow and change on a daily basis They are pygmy possums who came into care after the recent big storm destroyed their tree.
12.01.2022 This poor dead mummy possum was found at the entrance of Centennial Park in Dunsborough this afternoon. Literally hundreds of people have walked past her, she was right on the path! Hundreds of people and not one thought to stop and check its pouch, until a gorgeous lady and her family got off their bikes and seen movement.... It makes me sad that this babies chances are so much lower because he has been cold for so long but I will try my best regardless. Another reminder to check possum and kangaroo pouches especially this time of year. It only takes a moment and could save a life. Dont assume someone else will check, because they dont!
11.01.2022 Nothing educational to say, just four cute little pygmy possums growing nicely to cheer you up and get you through the week, Runty is being bullied abit so I might have to separate her shes eating so not in the video but plenty more pics and videos in our insta feed.
10.01.2022 A selection of gorgeous, haooy, healthy joeys currently in care - this isnt even all of what our carers currently have Keep checking pouches
10.01.2022 The poor swallows are getting battered in the storm, my phone and facebook are non stop. Please be careful as they are all over the roads, if you want to help keep them warm and dry in a box for a few hours perhaps on your deck or carport until they are rested enough to take off again. Local vets are taking them too but are already inundated. You can email a report of deaths to the DBCA too at https://www.dbca.wa.gov.au/ it might be useful for records. Please feel free to share any pics you might have or call for advice
10.01.2022 To all those needing to evacuate the Yallingup area be careful of kangaroos also trying to getaway from the fire. If you need help with wildlife our number is 0404235437. Take care on the roads they are especially slippery with the rain
09.01.2022 Yesterday we had a call about a possum who had been stuck in a down pipe for a few days we went and eventually cut her free and pulled her out. She's very cold, wet and dehydrated but will be back home where she belongs soon
09.01.2022 This poor baby suffered days, cold, hungry, terrified and in a lot of pain before someone checked his mummas pouch and found him, sadly he had very bad injuries and broken legs and had to be euthanised so glad he is no longer suffering
08.01.2022 This poor baby got into some bother this morning after becoming tangled in an orchard net, this is more common with 28s and wattle birds and occasionally even snakes. Luckily they had a super tall ladder so I was able to safely cut him free and release As you can see, it really loved me and kept giving me the stink eye
08.01.2022 This is Steve, out of the group hes the only vocal one, hes very impatient and wags his tail angrily while he has to wait 5 seconds for his food 4 of the babies have opened their eyes today, this has made things very interesting as they all run off in different directions when Im trying to feed them
08.01.2022 Great info on here. Remember to never feed an animal especially a baby possum! Always carry a spare pillowcase or towel
07.01.2022 This year has been such a strange one for our wildlife, we still have little teeny babies and even pinkies coming in as well as teenagers misplaced and adults dehydrated ect this little cutie loves her native flowers and leaves

05.01.2022 Planning meeting for Dunsborough
05.01.2022 These teeny tiny little pygmy possums have come a very long way, from weak blind defenseless little orphans who couldnt fend for themselves, with nearly no fur and flat ears into strong ferocious little beasties who fend for themselves and eat my fingers given half the chance! While Runty is still very very small the rest have grown to be big fatties who love their food, even pugsley the other small one has caught up. GeeGee is definitely the boss and what she says goes, Karen is very laid back and Steve is always on guard and ready to make a scene Im soo thrilled these babies were found and I was able to give them the chance they deserve, its such a miracle they survived
05.01.2022 FENCE HANGERS Many people from overseas do not know what the term fence hangers means. These are some of the fence hangers we have photographed over the last f...ew years .Many times photographs are not taken as the vision of these poor creatures suffering necessitates quick action to prevent further injury. The problems these animals have are mutiple-hyper or hypothermia, dehydration, foot or leg fractures ,lactic acidosis, myoglobinuria, nerve palsy ,severe lacerations, dislocated hip and tissue necrosis.Their outcomes with appropriate treatment are very good .The most problematic injuries are hip dislocation and tissue necrosis distal to the wire.Unfortunately many times they are found too late and the poor animals suffer a terrible death.A number of the photos are too late photos . There was no necessity for immediate action and so there was time to take a photo to record the suffering caused by fences - in particular barbed wire fences. See more
04.01.2022 In all the storm chaos and pygmy possum adorablness Ive forgotten to continually remind you all that it is joey season this is the time of year when more kangaroo get hit on the roads but its also just after they have been breeding and pretty much every single female will now have last years joey running along side her as well as a tiny pinky growing in her pouch. Its so important to check pouches as the poor joeys can survive several days slowly feeding and starving. Pop... a pillow case in your car and check pouches Dont forget you can adopt most of our babies online too. If you find sick, injured or orphaned wildlife and its safe to do so you can take it to any vet, you will not be charged for this and they can find an appropriate carer. 03.01.2022 The dead kangaroo outside mitre 10 has been checked I just ran out of spray paint I will get some today and mark it Just letting you know before I get 20 calls about it
03.01.2022 Those mean old Dunsborough lakes swans are at it again bullying this young one and pulling out his feathers
02.01.2022 This is Karen, she is my favourite of the 5 new pygmy possums, she is the best feeder already and has a wonky ear Look at her tiny little hands, so perfect and yet so small Out of the 5 babies rescued after their tree was blown over their are 3 girls and two boys. Dont forget to check your fallen trees for wildlife
02.01.2022 Wohooo Ive taught some of the babies to lap from a bowl After several requests Ive also added them to our adoption page on your website, so you can jump online and support them as well as getting a cute certificate to print and put in your office or on the fridge https://www.dunsboroughwildlifecare.com//the-pygmy-possum-
02.01.2022 Im pleased that last night my image below (which I feel is important for the message it gives - so please read to the end), was announced as runner up in the ...Our Impact category of the 2020 Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year. Titled Dont forget to check for me the image shows a female brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) and her joey that my partner and I found in the gutter. My partner (Heather) and I noticed the dead possum in the gutter from a distance, but as we got closer, this gorgeous little joey poked his/her head head out. We assume that the mother was most likely killed by a car and (considerately) someone had moved it to the side of the road, however didnt know or think to check the pouch for a joey. So we wrapped the mum up in a towel (with the joey still in the pouch), and took them to a veterinarian. The good news is, the joey survived and was given to a carer to look after. To me, this was really a powerful reminder to always check the pouch of any dead marsupial you happen to come accross. Of course congratulation to the winner of the category Richard Robinson with his image The Wreck of the Penguins, and all the other winners and finalists. #brushtailpossum #possum #marsupial #checkthepouch #roadtrauma #roadkill #wildlife #naturephotography #naturephotographer #wildlifephotography #animalwelfarephotography #photojournalism #photodocumentary #documentaryphotography #urbanwildlife International League of Conservation Photographers ILCP Nature Picture Library Wildlife Victoria Australian Geographic
02.01.2022 This gorgeous baby girl was rescued from the ocean a nd waves by a running club
01.01.2022 Everyone keeps asking how the pygmy possums are getting along... The answer is they are all doing amazingly, such different personalities they still sleep pretty much all the time but have started using their tails more. They all move as a group although GeeGee chooses to sleep separately on the top of the nest she has taken over as leader. And is always first out. Karen is still a gorgeous easy little piggy. Steve has settled down his whining and spends most of his time with Karen. Runty and Pugsley have joined up and are last for everything, both being considerably smaller they still need extra attention and feeding separately to ensure they get enough food
01.01.2022 Poor tired and dehydrated little bubba found behind a bin in coles thank goodness the kind employee found him and was able to wait with him until a carer could collect, they are so weak when this small and often become a victim of crows and magpies or domestic pets
01.01.2022 Gorgeous new baby who came into care very last last night, he has given Jenny a very busy time but hes going to do great with Jenny for a foster mum
