14.01.2022 Every purebred dog breed was developed for a purpose, selectively bringing together qualities that allow the dog to be good at its intended job. Those breed traits are what defines and distinguishes one breed from another. While there can be similarities between groups of dogs there will always be elements that set them apart. Many people come to the Lagotto after having one or more different breeds in their lives. That experience gives an opportunity to learn which traits o...r behaviors work for a family and also to identify those common breed traits or behaviors that may be challenging, even ‘deal-breakers’, in the selection of a breed. As new people are learning more about this breed there is an abundance of positive marketing being done through kennel clubs and social media that may not always bring an authentic picture of everything Lagotti. True breed enthusiasts LOVE their dog and are happy to share all of the perfect attributes anytime someone shows interest in the breed. When sharing information about a breed it is good to take a wider view from our individual dog and lifestyle and remember to share those common traits that might not necessarily make them a good fit for everyone. No breed of dog is a great fit for EVERYONE- that’s why it is so wonderful that there are hundreds of dog breeds in the world to choose from. If people interested in this breed only have the ‘perfect breed’ story without having real conversations they may get an unrealistic picture and find disappointment or ‘deal-breakers’ AFTER they bring a dog home. Let’s try and have an open conversation about the breed by answering these two questions: #1 Name a common Lagotto breed trait/behavior that is important for people to know that could be challenging or a ‘deal-breaker’ for some families/lifestyles? #2 Do you feel this breed is a good fit for a first time dog owner?
