22.01.2022 Repost @ngvmelbourne To celebrate #InternationalDayofIndigenousPeoples, Hannah Presley, NGV Curator of Indigenous Art, shares her personal connection with Regina Pilawuk Wilson’s Syaw (Fish Net): Regina Pilawuk Wilson is a Ngan’gikurrungurr woman from the Daly River region of the Northern Territory. Regina is a strong cultural leader for the Peppimenarti community and an acclaimed artist and weaver. She is also my family. Syaw (Fish Net) is a significant painting that tra...nslates the traditional weaving practices that Regina has protected throughout her life, into acrylic on canvas. In the early 1970s, Regina and her husband, Harry Wilson, moved away from the Daly River mission, where language and culture were strictly prohibited, and set up an Aboriginal community at Peppimenarti to ensure the survival of their culture. My grandfather, Albert Presley, was from Peppimenarti. When he was a child, the government took him from his mother and his siblings and placed him at the Bungalows, at the Old Telegraph Station in Alice Springs. Syaw (Fish Net) is a particularly important work to me as it connects me to my grandfather’s Country and reminds me that I have a strong cultural connection that Regina fought for, and that her family and community have ensured survives for our new generations. #NGVEveryDay Regina Pilawuk Wilson Syaw (Fish net) 2008 National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Purchased, NGV Supporters of Indigenous Art, 2008 Regina Pilawuk Wilson/Licensed by Copyright Agency, Australia

21.01.2022 Durrmu artists' Regina Pilawuk Wilson and Kathleen Korda have been mentioned as artists and cultural leaders who have influenced artist Katie West as part of Buxton Contemporary’s ‘Creative Cosmos'; a digital program of conversations with artists. Katie met Regina and Kathleen while attending a weaving workshop at @lot19artspace in Castlemaine. Who are some of the thinkers, artists and cultural leaders who influence you?... I admire Regina Pilawuk Wilson and Kathleen Korda, artists from Peppimenarti, west of Darwin, in the Northern Territory. I met Regina and Kathleen while they were visiting Castlemaine, Victoria, to run a workshop on how to make string from palm leaf and how to dye the fibre. This was the first time I had ever been shown how to make string by rubbing the fibre on your leg in a back-and-forth motion. The process requires a gentle touch and nuanced knowledge in your fingertips, and once expertly mastered, it is a quick and efficient method. Regina and Kathleen are highly skilled and are generous with their knowledge, which is deeply entwined with family and country. Knowing their history and how Peppimenarti came to be as a community, I deeply admire and look up to them as artists and elders. #culturalleaders #durrmuarts #durrmuartists #weaving #peppimenarti #keepingculturestrong #weavingworkshop #sharingculture #intergenerationalknowledge #nimbi @ Castlemaine, Victoria

18.01.2022 Regina Pilawuk Wilson has been incredibly busy this past month completing her commissioned 'Wupun' (sunmat) for the newly-developed Manunda Place ground floor lobby in Darwin. Consisting of three giant panels, which are nearly 10m in scale, has required meticulous attention to detail of matching the correct lines and colours across each panel. 16.01.2022 Durrmu Artists Annunciata Dartinga and Regina Pilawuk Wilson have been stripping merrepen (sand palm) and pandanus (yerrgi) as the wet season approaches. Although merrepen can be collected all year round, pandanus is ideally harvested and collected during the wet season as it dries out quickly and is easier to strip while wet. While merrepen takes only 5-10 minutes to dry after being stripped, pandanus can take up to an hour. Stripped merrepen and pandanus are used to make fi... 16.01.2022 Australian music legend Slim Dusty wrote a song called 'Plains of Peppimenarti' after spending time here in the early 1980s. These photos are from our archive during the filming of the music video clip. We think his lyrics sum up Peppimenarti pretty well... Now I've been around Australia and I've travelled everywhere But there's one place I really like to go Where the land is big and wide and tall dark ringers ride... On the plains of Peppimenarti, where the old Moyle River flows And I've mentioned this before And it's a story that I'm always proud to tell. May the march of time never ever bring too many changes To a way of life you people love and prize May the years ahead be good ones And you never lose your customs With old Peppimenarti Hill looking down so old and wise And the Kangaroo still bounds on that rough and rugged ground The ant hills and the old pandanus grow Yes and everyday's a Sunday if you're catching Barramundi By the plains of Peppimenarti, where the old Moyle River flows ‘Plains of Peppimenarti’ words and music by Slim Dusty Here is a link to the video clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpiHJ_-mXX4 #peppimenarti #slimdusty #slimandi #peppimenartihill #plainsofpeppimenarti #fromthearchive #NIMBI #NIMBIproject #keepingculturestrong #culturalmaintenance #durrmuarts

15.01.2022 Regina Pilawuk Wilson recently visited her ancestor's homeland and the sacred rock art hill of Pinnydu. Regina's father's family lived here, where they would roast kangaroo on the stone with fire using bark tree, and also use the bark tree as blankets to sleep. The rock art is made using ochre; the colours of red, yellow, and white made by smashing the ochre and mixing it with water in their mouths to then mark the rock with their hands. These markings can be dated back over ...40,000 years, and as Regina says 'the colours are still so strong', even the little yellow and white baby feet markings which are on the ceiling... Regina took three of her grandson's here for the first time; Preston, Tristan and Harry. A spiritual and peaceful place where a strong connection to Country and their ancestor's can be deeply felt. This special place is hidden and should only be accessed with the permission and accompaniment of the traditional owners of the land. Legend has it, if you can find this special place without a traditional owner and attempt to take a photo, the photo will come out white and blank... #reginapilawukwilson #rockart #rockarthill #ochre #peppimenarti #westdaly #traditionalculture #culturalmaintenance #keepingculturestrong #traditionalowners #sacred #connectiontocountry #NIMBI #NIMBIproject #intergenerationallearning

13.01.2022 Over the past few months, Regina Pilawuk Wilson has been partaking in the 2020 Durrmu Arts Marrgu Digital Residency ‘Marrgu’ means ‘knowledge sharing’ or ‘new start’ in Peppimenarti’s Tyemirri language and is a residency program, established in 2018, which offers an exceptional opportunity for artists and creative practitioners to engage with the Peppimenarti community in a valuable cultural exchange. In this digital iteration of our Marrgu residency program, Regina has been ...corresponding with Artist Katie West (@katiewularni) who belongs to the Yindjibarndi people of the Pilbara tablelands in Western Australia, and Fayen D’Evie (@muckletimes), a Malaysian-born, Aotearoa-New Zealand-raised artist, who now resides in the bushlands of unceded Dja Dja Wurrung country in Victoria. Here, Regina is creating two ‘mail art’ postcards to post to Katie and Fayen in a cultural exchange that extends to, and connects, each artist in a tactile way, in spite of the physical restrictions and impacts of 2020. We have been exchanging and sharing our natural materials from each artists’ local regional areas, with all ideas organically building and developing over time into what will be a new and original (and also as yet, unknown) final artwork from the influences of the residency. In the early 70s, Harold Wilson and his wife Regina, were instrumental in the community’s establishment. Wilson was born in Peppimenarti country, and after being removed from his family and sent to government institutions as a child, he decided to return th...ere as an adult with his family and set up a permanent settlement for the Ngan’gikurrunggurr people. 09.01.2022 ‘Warrgadi’ (string dilly bag) is made from merrepen (sand-palm or livistona humilis) fibre, which is stripped and rolled along the leg into ‘fi’ (twine), and then woven using a simple loop, knotless netting technique. This method is used to make traditional fishing nets, as well as the ‘handbag’ style of dilly bags. At the very beginning of the wet season the natural pigments (berries, roots and ash) are collected and used to dye the merrepen fibres. 07.01.2022 This sunmat is a Wilson-family artistic collaboration. Regina Pilawuk Wilson and her granddaughter, Leaya Smith, weaved this beautifully delicate sunmat together. Leaya weaved the bright and intricate circular centre, while Regina has woven the surrounding curvaceous and complex outer areas. When looking closely, you can see the subtle differences in colours, pattern and style between the outer and inner areas, yet the distinctive Wilson-weaving-style remains strong. 06.01.2022 This is Durrmu Arts artist Grace Dodson and her latest work ‘Nathi pirrihi purrpurr’ (Fossil Head Little People), 2020, acrylic on canvas, 100x120cm. In the cliffs, there is a special rock where ‘little people’ can be seen in the fossils. These ‘little people’ signify the alive and felt presence of the spirits of her ancestors still alive within the cliffs and Country; Fossil Head is Grace’s Mothers' Country. Born in 1980, Grace is daughter to Durrmu Artist Annunciata Darting...a and daughter-in-law to Regina Pilawuk Wilson. Married to Regina’s son Henry Wilson, Grace has lived in Peppimenarti for many years, with Henry and their two sons. Grace works full-time as a nurse at the Peppimenarti Clinic, and uses painting as a way to relax and clear her mind after a busy day at work. She also likes to paint when working the night on-call shifts, shifting from the chaos to calm through her painting. Her calm, soft and delicate colour palette is inspired by stories from her Mothers' Country at Fossil Head.
