A project designed to share messages of hope, support and encouragement for women and children who are and/or have experienced domestic and family violence. The project aims to bring awareness of the prevalence and impact of domestic and family violence whilst creating hope and support for victim-survivors, their friends and family whilst sending a clear message the violence against women and children in n...ot okay. The Wings of Hope project is being throughout the 16 days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (from November 25th to December 10th) we will be collecting messages of hope, support and encourage. 25.01.2022 NT’s first specialised, theraputic domestic violence court. A step towards creating safe and therapeutic court experiences for victim of domestic violence in Alice Springs. "It's important that victims aren't retraumatised, or even worse, threatened or intimidated while they are using the facilities," Judge Huntingford said.... "...The court is also where a new, rehabilitation-focused domestic violence list is heard, making it what Judge Huntingford calls "a therapeutic court". Defendants who intend to plead guilty to domestic violence charges and want to access rehabilitation can apply to join the list, which allows them access to men's behavioural change programs..." https://www.abc.net.au//domestic-violence-court-a/12748894

21.01.2022 This month is sexual violence awareness month and it’s time to start challenging some community attitudes around sexual violence and violence against women. Australia’s young people have some concerning attitudes when it comes to violence against women, the National Communality Attitudes Survey towards Violence against Women reports that nearly 1 in 4 young Australian’s disagree that violence against women is common. More than 1 in 4 young Australians believe women are part...ly responsible for what her partner does with that image, or who he shows a that image to. And 1 in 8 believe women mean yes when they say no It is important to challenge these attitudes as they contribute to the ongoing myths and attitudes that violence against women is okay or that women are to be held accountable in some way for the violence and assault that happens to them. Young people are our future and everyone can play a part in changing the attitudes and beliefs around violence against women. If you or someone you know has experienced sexual assault, confidential and free help and support is available: 1800 RESPECT - 1800 737 732 Cairns Sexual Assault Services - 4031 3590 (8:30am 5pm, Mon to Fri_ DVConnect Sexual Assault Services 1800 010 120 (7:30am 11:30pm, 7 days) You can find more information about the findings if the National Communality Attitudes Survey here: anrows.org.au/research-program/ncas/

21.01.2022 Last night at the Hilton Cairns a small group of colleagues, friends and allies came together to farewell Amanda Lee-Ross, who has for the last 18 years fearlessly led the CRDVS service. It was certainly a heartfelt affair full of laughter and tears. It is without a doubt that Amanda’s hard work and dedication to the service and the sector have not gone unnoticed. In Amanda’s reign as fearless leader and empathetic advocate she has gone above and beyond to ensure that victim...-survivors are at the very core of discussions at local, state and national levels that impact on their lives and safety. Whilst this is the end of an era in some ways, it is just the beginning in so many others.

20.01.2022 This is it. The day has come. In a final farewell, we say thank you and see you soon. ... We will be cheering you on as you eventually run the world!

14.01.2022 National Child Protection Week. This week is National Child Protection Week and a great opportunity for us to reflect on the impact domestic and family violence has on children and young people. Australia’s children a report compiled by the Australian institute of Health and Welfare examines the most recent data on children and their families across 7 domains of health, education, social support, household income and finance, parental employment, housing, and justice and safe...ty. The report highlights, specific data relating to children exposed to family violence, under Justice and Safety the key findings included: The 2016 Personal Safety Survey (PSS) estimates that about 1 in 6 women (16% or 1.5 million) and 1 in 9 men (11% or 992,000) experienced physical and/or sexual abuse before the age of 15. According to the 2018 ABS Recorded Crime data, more than two-fifths of all sexual assaults recorded against children aged 014 (around 3,100) were perpetrated by a family member. Sexual assaults perpetrated by family members were almost 4 times more likely perpetrated against girls than boys (107.0 sexual assaults per 100,000 girls compared with 28.3 sexual assaults per 100,000 boys). Where the perpetrator was specified, a parent or another family member was the perpetrator in more than half (58%) of assault-related hospitalisations involving children aged 014 in 201617. 13.01.2022 RECLAIM THE NIGHT Reclaim the Night is a global protest against sexual assault and gender-based violence; supporting women’s right to be free from fear of rape and violence. On October 21st, 2018, the Cairns community was devastated by the senseless and violent murder of Toyah Cordingley. Cairns has one of the highest per capita rates of reported sexual assault crimes in regional Queensland. This prevalence of sexual violence impacts greatly upon... the ability of women in Cairns to move freely and without fear throughout our city during the day or night. On Friday 23rd October, Cairns will come together, taking our voices to the streets and demanding a community free of violence against women! Through street theatre, music, performances, a community art project and more, Reclaim the Night is raising awareness for #AffirmativeConsent #StartByBelieving FOR MORE INFO Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/653084372286536/ For enquiries: Ella Morter. 11.01.2022 "Every day, in a range of services around Queensland, workers encounter people experiencing, or perpetrating domestic and family violence. This means that every day workers hear information that causes them to be concerned for the safety of victims of this violence. However, many workers are not aware of when and how they may appropriately share information, to protect victims, under the current legislative provisions. This brief video introduces you to the Domestic and Fami...ly Violence Information Sharing Guidelines, a valuable resource designed to answer those questions. You will be shown how to access the Guidelines and learn about: what is permitted under the legislation, who is allowed to share information, what circumstances allow information sharing without consent to ensure the safety of victims and children, and what information can be shared. Everyone values their privacy, and whenever safe, possible and practical, workers should gain a person’s consent providing personal information about the person to someone else."

10.01.2022 Women with disability face additional barriers when it comes to reporting sexual violence. Those barriers don't come from the fact that they have a disability, ...the stem from a society that is disabling. Accessibility and communication, reduced financial freedom, a lack of appropriate support services, and being given little or no sexuality education, all impact a person's opportunity to understand their experience and access the resources and support they need to disclose and heal. For some people with disability, their carer may also be the offender which further limits the freedom they have to disclose. They might only get one opportunity to tell someone what they are experiencing so it's important that we all start by believing! #WeBelieveWednesday #SVAM2020 #StartByBelievingAustralia

09.01.2022 MULTICULTURAL & MULTILINGUAL RESOURCES Dear Friends Domestic and family violence occurs in all cultures, and it is hurting our communities. Abuse isn’t always physical it can be emotional, verbal, sexual, financial or involve other controlling behaviours or threats that cause the person being abused to live in fear.... Women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds have other vulnerabilities that can intersect with family violence including social isolation, migration and settlement issues, language difficulties, past experiences of trauma and a lack of support and knowledge about their rights and choices. We can all play an important role in helping victims seek help and find safety from domestic and family violence. As a member of the Multicultural Queensland Advisory Council and the Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Council, I am pleased to be able to share with you some new resources that have been developed to help victims and their friends and family know the signs of abuse, where to get help and how to provide support. The translated resources are available in 29 languages including Arabic, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Punjabi, Korean, Samoan, Spanish, Vietnamese, Amharic, Burmese, Croatian, Dinka, Farsi, Filipino/Tagalog, French, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Malay, Oromo, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Somalian, Swahili, Tamil, Thai, and Turkish, and are available for download at www.qld.gov.au/dfvresources. Please consider how you can best use these resources to support women in your community. The way you respond to someone experiencing domestic and family violence can make a crucial difference in their life. Remember that abuse does not have to include physical violence to be wrong and dangerous. You don’t need to be certain that abuse is happening. Trust your instincts. Don’t wait for the situation to get worse or for someone else to help. Warm regards Faiza El-Higzi Member, Multicultural Queensland Advisory Council Member, Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Council

04.01.2022 Positive step for NSW Community and Religious Leaders Community and religious leaders will be empowered to respond to domestic and family violence through a new training program to begin next month. Educated with the right information and the skills to recognise abuse in different forms means leaders may be able to provide that vital support to survivors for the first time and, ultimately, help ensure that people get the crucial help they need in times of crisis. ... If community and religious leaders educate themselves about the current complexities of domestic and family violence, they can give community members practical solutions and link them to the right services, while supporting them spiritually, Ms Kaur said. https://www.miragenews.com/domestic-violence-training-for-/
