07.01.2022 || HAPPY BOWEL, HAPPY LIFE || Who'd have thought a talk about bowels would have an audience so focussed we could have heard a pin drop. Dr Michael Levitt, r...espected colorectal surgeon, and author of 'The Happy Bowel: a user-friendly guide for the whole family', enlightened us about functional bowel disorders in an information packed, at times most entertaining, talk delivered so matter-of-factly it dispelled any embarrassment people may have felt. There was a lively Q&A, and John from Dymocks Midland Gate was kept busy with sales of the book. Dr Levitt discussed widely held, but not always, accurate, tenets about what constitutes "normal", as well as the "golden rules" and guidelines governing the achievement of a "happy bowel". We learned about some misconceptions concerning diet, surprising home truths about laxatives, and much more. The book, published by Fremantle Press is very readable, easy to understand, but in no way "dumbed down", and includes chapters such as "The relationship between bowel and brain", "Bowel problems in children", case studies and a "Frequently asked questions". In the book's introduction, Dr Levitt writes, "Given the undeniably important role that opening our bowels plays in the broad sweep of human existence, it is truly mystifying that this pivotal bodily function enjoys such a diminutive place in our society...generally relegated to the dismal ranks of what is disparagingly referred to as 'toilet humour'". So there you go! Get yourself a copy. The libraries have copies for loan, but it can be purchased directly from Fremantle Press, online and from book stores.

05.01.2022 || 'THE HAPPY BOWEL' BY DR MICHAEL LEVITT || Due to the demand for Dr Levitt's first talk on his book, 'The Happy Bowel', Dr Levitt kindly delivered a s...econd talk to a great audience at Boya Community Centre last night. The talk was again filled with humour tempered with dignity, down-to-earth information with medical science evidence, and very practical. Dr Levitt's skill as a writer and presenter is evident in the affable, knowledgeable way he speaks about something that is part of every human's existence but no one wants to talk about except perhaps to joke about. The talk was videorecorded and should be available for viewing on the libraries' Facebook page next week. The libraries have copies for loan, but it can be purchased directly from Fremantle Press , online and from book stores. In fact, Dr Levitt said it would make a great Christmas present!
