25.01.2022 FUN FIT FRIDAY: Soleus muscle release with the foam roller. . Getting some calf tightness and tension from too much ? Stretching is one way of addressing this issue. Another way is to release it or massage it out. ... Did you know that the calf is collectively a group of 2 muscles? 1.) The gastrocnemius which is the top most layer that we can easily see in most people they raise onto tip toe. It has two bellies creating that funky heart shape. 2.) The other muscle that make up the calf is the SOLEUS. This fella lies deep beneath the gastrocnemius. Another unique feature is unlike the gastroc, it does not cross over the knee joint but only the ankle via the archiles. So stretching this muscle will require you to keep the knee bent. Whilst releasing is a bit tricky as being a deep layer, only its outer edges are exposed. Here's a trick to release the tight-some soleus. The key is to get as much pressure onto it as possible whilst leaning your body/leg onto the sides. Have fun . . for more stretch and release tips, click bio above and join our Online Stretch & Release classes with @alymcbride . Otherwise drop in to see our guru myotherapist @fitzwhat for some hands on treatment before your next See more

08.01.2022 Plantar Fasciitis - is such a pain in the foot of a condition to deal with The plantar fascia is a band of connective tissue running from the base of our heel bone (the calcaneum) to the base of the toes on the sole of the foot. It acts like a spring board to provide shock absorption as the foot fully landed on the ground during weight bearing. It also help stabilises the arch of the foot by maintaining connection of big toe to to heel. Plantar fasciitis is the inflamma...tion of this band, often due to progressive overuse resulting in micro-tearing of the tissue. People with a sudden increased in weight-bearing activities, esp. running and jumping, which causes repeated micro trauma to the plantar fascia. Our foot structures, high arch or flat footed, are commonly associated with this condition also. Poor supportive footwear, e.g. sudden change of being in supported shoes all winter to being in sandals and flip-flop all summer can caused great stress and strain to the fascia. Sudden weight increase and obesity can also be s cause. As the structure has poor blood supply, even the slightest tear can take a long time to heal. Unfortunately, being at the base of the foot, it has to continuously endure weight bearing and impact/load onto it. Symptoms often show up as tightness & pain to the bottom of the foot, right where your arch and heel meets. They're often worse in the morning, and after rather than during exercises. If you suspect that you have plantar fasciitis, it is vital you see your physiotherapist or seek medical advice asap. This is so that they can rule out any other diagnosis with similar symptoms to plantar fasciitis such as stress fracture, heel spurs, or bursitis. Next a management plan is needed asap. Whilst rest, stretch, & anti-inflammatory may help. If the wrong combination or timing is applied it could prolong and further worsen the condition. A carefully tailored strength program to allow the intrinsic muscles of the foot to support the arch and adjunct physiotherapy treatment often have the best results. if you want further information on plantar fasciitis or need help with similar foot pain and injuries DM us. @ Melbourne, Victoria, Australia See more

04.01.2022 Bone Health is an important topic to discuss across all stages of life. Our bones support us and allow us to move. They protect our brain, heart, and other organs from injury. Our bones also store minerals such as calcium & phosphorous, and release them into the body when we need them for certain uses. Did you know that bones, like other organs in our bodies, are active tissues? Every day old bone is broken down, and new is created from the nutrients we provide. During physic...al activities such as running, walking, ball sports, or gymnastics , our bones are naturally broken down in response to the impact forces. This is a necessary and natural process to stimulate the regrowth of new, stronger bone in its’ place. Childhood and young adulthood are the bone building years. As children grow, their bone mass increases until they reach Peak Bone Mass stage. A peak bone mass stage is when the greatest amount of bone an individual can attain, and is normally in late teens to early 20s. Beyond this point, bone density cannot be changed and we rely in this skeleton for the rest of our life. Children who have a higher peak bone mass have a far less risk of developing osteoporosis later in life. For those young athletes who go on to senior sports or reached profesional competition levels, strong bones and greater density will help prevent injury to keep them participating for longer term. There are many things we can do to keep our bones healthy and strong. Weight bearing and regular, moderate, impact exercises encourage new bone matrix to form. Getting outdoors definitely ticks the Vitamin D. box. However, food sources rich in minerals and nutrients such as calcium, phosphorus, collagen (a type of protein) and Vitamin D should also be given extra attention when it comes to bone growth and vitality. For more info on ideal exercise, activity programs, and dietary advice for kids, teenagers, AND adults & seniors regarding maintaining Bone Health, feel free to DM us.
