24.01.2022 Until recently, psychological stress and diet were thought to have little relevance to the pathophysiology of acne. However, with research and understanding of the brain-gut-skin axis, it is clear that stress and gut health have a significant affects on acne We know when we are stressed, anxious, depressed etc our skin show signs of inflammation, especially those prone to acne. 23.01.2022 One of the biggest factor in any skin conditions are triggers. While this list of potential rosacea triggers various from one individual to another and may be endless, a survey of 1,066 rosacea patients found that the most common trigger factors are Sun exposure Emotional stress Hot weather Wind... Heavy exercise Alcohol consumption Hot baths Cold weather Spicy foods Humidity Indoor heat Certain skin-care products Heated beverages Certain cosmetics Medications Medical conditions Certain fruits Marinated meats Certain vegetables Dairy products (Resource from National Rosacea Society) Finding out what triggers your rosacea can help manage the exacerbation of the condition. I often advise my patients to keep a diary of the types of foods/species they consumed, lifestyle, emotional factors etc to help them better understand how they can assist with their rosacea while taking a prescribed Chinese herbal medicine. Together this help reduce the frequency of blushing and to prevent the deterioration of the skin condition If you would like to understand how Chinese medicine can help with your rosacea, book via link in profile for an online consult . . . #rosaceaawareness #rosaceatips #rosacea #rosaceatriggers #rosaceamanagement #rosaceaawarenessmonth #blushing #flushing #skincare #skinhealth #skinhelp #skin #dermatology #onlineconsult #onlinehealth #telehealth #telemedicine

21.01.2022 Research has confimed that the skin act as an immediate stress perceiver and as a target of stress response. The skin is a primary sensing organ for external stressors. It is also a local source that can induce various immune and inflammatory responses Pyschological stress arises when people are under mental, physical or emotional pressure. It is perceived by the brain and stress hormones such as corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), glucocorticoids and epinephrine are relea...sed. This triggers a wide range of physiological changes and responses that try to adapt the body to the stress Stress conditions exert their effects to skin via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Stress has long been suspected to induce acne flares through the role of skin peripheral HPA axis. Studies had shown that CHR promotes up-regulation of key enzyme and contributing to inflammation PMID 24853682 The key message to take away from this is to find a balance between work and life and, try not to stress/be frustrated about your acne. By shifting your mindset and focus on the positives, it may help reduce the exacerbation and severity of your acne If you have tried everything but havent explore Chinese herbal medicine to manage acne, have a chat with me. 18.01.2022 In Chinese medicine, rosacea is known as either drinkers nose or red nose. This inflammatory condition involves the nose (hence the name of the condition in Chinese medicine), cheeks, forehead and chin From Chinese medicine perspective, rosacea may be caused by Blood-Heat in the Lung meridian. As he Lungs open into the nose, Heat will enter into nose which will gradually redden, given rise to this condition Indulgence in too much pungent or spicy foods can generate Hea...t which transform into Fire. Heat and Fire travels along the meridians, overfills the network vessels, manifesting as tidal reddening of the nose Cold invading the face due to Wind-cold (think windy cold wintery weather) settling into the skin leading ro Blood Stasis as Cold congeals and block the flow of Qi. The nose initially turns red to purple then to dull red Exacerbated by emotional factors such as stress, grief and anxiety Drinks such as alcohol, strong tea or coffee that are Yang in nature can increase flushing to the face Management of rosacea via herbal medicine is very effective. 17.01.2022 Do you listen when your body gives out signs and sends you signals? Do you ignore/accept period pain, mood swings, sugar craving, anxiety/depression etc as part of a normal menstrual cycle? Do you accept that irregular cycles, amenorrhae (lack of period or no period), dysmenorrhae (pain with period), PCOS, Endometriosis etc as part of your menstrual health?... I believe the body is extremely clever. It gives out signs, symptoms and signals to say something within the body is not in harmony. It is up to you to listen and to look into why your body is reacting that way. The body is also very resilient. It will hold up with whatever you throw at it until to a point when it breaks down Now that we are in isolation and have some time for selfcare, take this opportunity to work out how you can improve your menstrual health. 16.01.2022 Over the years, an expanding body of research has highlighted the presence if a gut-brain-skin axis to acne severity Currently strong evidence indicates that gut microbes play a mediating role between skin inflammation and emotion. Although not fully known, the mechanism by which the gut microbiota influence skin stability seems to come from its modulatory effect on systemic immunity. Evidence also suggest that gut flora can affect the skin more directly, by transporting the ...gut microbiota to the skin. When the intestinal barrier is disrupted, gut microbiota and their metabolites quickly enter the bloodstream, accumulate in the skin, disrupt the skin equilibrium resulting in inflammation PMID 31284794 If gut issues, stress and acne is something you battle with and would like some help to bring things back to harmony, have a chat with us on how we can help. 13.01.2022 "Lung-Wind Powder Prickles" I love the way Chinese medicine describes a condition based on what they see The name is derived from the starch-coloured fluid that is squeezed out from the thorn-like papular or pustular eruptions which are characteristic of acne vulgaris. It attributes acne to an imbalance of the Lungs with its pair Organ, the Large Intestines (Dermatology in Traditional Chinese Medicine)... The Lungs governs the skin and sweat glands which removes toxins and waste materials from our body as well as protect us from exterior elements. Its pair Organ, the Large Intestines eliminates digested food from the Small Intestines which is transformed into stools. Its function is to ensure stools are moved along and downwards. Together they form a function to remove unnecessary waste and toxin to keep both the skin and body functioning well If you suffer from "Lung-Wind Powder Pickles" (acne) and would like to explore herbal medicine to manage it, book online for either a face-to-face or online consult via link in profile . . . #acne #acnebegone #acnehelp #acnetips #acnecare #acneprone #herbalmedicineforacne #dermatology #skincare #skincaretips #skin #chinesemedicine #acupuncture #facialcare #facial #skinhealth

01.01.2022 One of the biggest influence in acne from Chinese medicine perspective is the Stomach, both as an Organ and Meridian, follow by the Small Intestines and Large Intestines. These three Organs/Meridians plays a vital role in managing acne. Accompanying symptoms other than acne are often found in patients that I treat are: Stomach-Heat - excessive hunger, constantly eating, halitosis, always on the hotter side of the temperature Small and Large Intestines (gut function) - slu...ggish bowels, prone to constipation, foul smelling stools, digestive issues From herbal medicine and acupuncture treatment, these Organs/Meridians are often targeted to clear Heat (inflammation) and regulate the bowels and digestive function. The Stomach meridian covers most of the face (imagine one) and it travels down to the chest, stomach and gut region, passing through the lower abdomen, leg and foot (second image). Hence, when your stomach and gut is functioning poorly, inflammation can manifest on the face, chest and neck If you have acne with these additional symptoms and would like some help, have a chat with me. I will be reopening the clinic on the 12th May for face-to-face appointments. I will also continue to provide online consults for those that prefer to stay home.
