24.01.2022 This week I spent time with a husband & wife team that run a successful plumbing business, which has been unaffected by the Covid-19 restrictions. In fact, the... 2019/20 year was their most successful year since the business was created. I pointed out that too often I see business owners worrying about the challenges they are facing in the coming year rather than taking time out to celebrate the success of the business in the past year. As a result, they booked a night out together to celebrate what a great year 2019/20 was for their business and ultimately for them one does not happen without the other! I also encouraged them to take the opportunity to find ways to express gratitude to their team and key customers. Without the commitment & support of both over the past 12 months, they would not have achieved the success they did. How do you celebrate success in your business?

23.01.2022 In the past week, I was in conversation with two clients in the allied health space, who were allowing their view of themselves to be defined by the outcomes ac...hieved by their clients. If the outcomes achieved by the client did not, in their minds, achieve the expected result, they felt it was their fault leading to a sense of failure and unworthiness. My response was to have them understand they have no control over the outcomes achieved by the client as that is only in control of the client. Their primary responsibility was to make sure the client had the motivation, knowledge, and tools to achieve the desired outcome. However, when these emotions do arise do not ignore them or try to suppress them. Instead acknowledge them by treating them as a small child wanting to be treated with kindness & respect. Listen, acknowledge reassure and allow it to unfold and feel supported. Going forward when they start to doubt themselves deal with these doubts with compassion and care. In this way, they will understand that their response is only one part of what will define them as an excellent practitioner of their craft.

10.01.2022 As the Covid-19 restrictions are gradually being lifted I am taking time to reflect on the lessons I learned over the last three months. One of the lessons I le...arned was to let go of the idea I must fill every minute of every day with doing something to be truly productive. I now accept it is OK to have times in the day when I will goof off and do nothing that would be considered productive. Just as importantly I do not feel guilty about having that downtime. It is in these quiet moments I find myself reflecting on my life which leads me to find creative solutions for my challenges. With this reflection & creativity comes a sense of renewal that provides improved energy & enthusiasm to tackle what is coming next. What lessons have you learned during the Covid-19 inspired shutdown?

04.01.2022 At the end of every coaching conversation, I always ask the client to summarise key learnings from that conversation. In the past week, in response to that qu...estion two clients have said the greatest value was talking through the situation they were in and having a fresh set of eyes to review that situation helped find the solution. The point here is that as business owners we are often just too close to the business, to immersed in the day-to-day work to see the forest from the trees. In the end, it does not matter who provides the fresh set of eyes. What matters is you accept the need for another perspective and to engage with someone to bring a fresh set of eyes to the situation. The odds are the solution is already staring you in the face, but you just cannot see it.
