21.01.2022 Working Bees are a central part of life in the Landcare World, where people can make a difference and get outside to help change and protect their small part of the world. 2020 has certainly thrown up many challenges in this area but Paynesville Landcare Coastcare Group have been thinking outside the box to enable their plantings to continue. With 75 mixed lilies to get into the ground, the Group devised a contactless working bee. Using digital technology to engage th...e members and provide guidelines on how and where to plant, contact-free plant deliveries were made to interested individuals and family groups. People could plant at a time that suited them and then just emailed a photo of their work back to the group. Simple, but effective! The photo below shows the results at the half-way stage. Great work: getting outside, getting hands dirty and getting the job done - all while practising safe social distancing. Amazing job everyone. #wonderlandcare Landcare Victoria Paynesville Sunset Cove Walking Track

21.01.2022 Second in our series of EGLN Group introductions: we bring you Raymond Island Landcare Group. This dedicated group of volunteers work alongside government bodies to develop, revegetate and maintain parts of Raymond Island. Most of their work is on public land (38 acres of it!) which is controlled by Parks Victoria and Glawac. The group is fortunate to have the support of Gunaikurnai rangers which has been invaluable in providing help with planting and weed control. The group... was established in 1995 and are still going strong. If youve ever visited Raymond Island, you may have seen the great Koala Trail Booklet all thanks to RI Landcare Group!! Although koalas are a big tourism drawcard for the Island, they arent without their problems especially the overgrazing of trees. The group has been steadily working to restore the island to its original condition through the clearing of bracken and planting of trees and understorey with amazing results as you can see from the before and after photos even with the added complications of kangaroos chewing their guards! But theyre keen to let you know that theyre not all work social events play a huge part for the group with food and friendship playing a big part. If you want to know more about this group, just contact us and well put you in touch!

20.01.2022 Landcarers from Eagle Point Landcare Coastcare Group decided to hold their Clean Up Australia Day event on 28th March in order to tie in with their regular working bee. 11 amazing volunteers helped out on the day and they collected: *10 bags of rubbish (5 rubbish, 5 recyclables), *a discarded picnic table, *a car tyre *a steel wheel rim. ... Great job everyone!! The good news is that the regulars noticed that the amount of rubbish was significantly less than in all previous years perhaps this is due to the COVID restrictions and less visitors over the last year? Unfortunately, having been out and about showing visitors around our beautiful region over the Easter Weekend, I was saddened by the amount of rubbish that had been left at various sites around Bairnsdale - it would be so lovely if people could just take their own rubbish home! #landcare #volunteer

20.01.2022 It was not an ideal day weather wise, but a visit to a Clifton Creek Landcare Group site proved fruitful for new Landcare Facilitator Matt Stephenson as he was present when they pulled out the last remaining Fireweed plant at the site! Rye grass and Clover have recently been sown to keep the invasive Fireweed at bay. Matt is keen to assist the group to maintain momentum on control of the weed and said, "This is a really community orientated community led project with direct action and careful planning at the forefront. This is Landcare at its best ... 2000+ Fireweed plants 12 months ago and now here we are pulling out the last one. There will be more in coming seasons, but this is a terrific start." Well done Clifton Creek!! Maintaining social distancing, masking up and keeping on top of the the job safely!

20.01.2022 EGLN are very excited to announce that we have been successful in receiving an exciting new grant through Landcare Australia and the WIRES Wildlife Relief and Recovery Grants. This new project will look at the impact of bushfires on our local platypus populations using eDNA. eDNA is great for citizen scientists to determine which wildlife species are present in their dams and rivers by collecting water samples. Prior to the bushfires, EnviroDNA (from Melbourne) sampled ri...vers in East Gippsland for platypus DNA. This data now gives us a unique opportunity to assess how platypus populations may have been impacted by the recent bushfires. Here are some amazing platypus photos courtesy of platypusSPOT. We look forward to updating you all on the progress of this project. East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority Far East Victoria Landcare #platypus

19.01.2022 And if Echidnas aren't your thing ... well, how about koalas?! One of our member Groups, Raymond Island Landcare Group, have been working with the Koala Clancy Foundation and Echidna Walkabout Nature Tours to develop special trips in 2021 where guests to the island will help the recently formed koala conservation group collect data including tree species preference, behaviour, identification of individuals and evidence of koalas drinking stemflow (water moving down the stem of a tree).

18.01.2022 Landcare Week is a great time to celebrate the people involved and here at EGLN we have new team member to introduce! The circle of life has landed long term Landcare staff member, Matt Stephenson, back in East Gippsland as EGLN welcomes Matt to the team as Facilitator. Matt previously ran the African Lovegrass and Serrated Tussock Programs for the East Gippsland and Maffra and District Landcare Networks between 2000 and 2005, and then went to work for Landcare on the Bass C...oast. Matts family have been in the East Gippsland area since the late 1860s, so it is a special place of heritage for him to return to. He enjoys time on the family farm at Glenaladale or at his property at Metung or adventuring across the landscape. Matt is looking forward to continuing the great work of current and former Landcare staff and he will be in contact with his new Groups very shortly. In the meantime, Im sure youll all join us in giving Matt a very warm welcome! Landcare Victoria #wonderlandcare #LandcareWeek

Working in partnership, EGLN and Far East Victoria Landcare are extremely pleased to announce that our region is the recipient of a $150,000 grant through News Corp Australia and Landcare Australia. This new project will see the two Networks engaging with schools and local Landcare Groups to provide landowners with the opportunity to set aside areas as habitat, shelter, breeding, or f...eeding areas for endangered species such as koalas, gliders, possums and the glossy black cockatoo, which saw 70% of its Victorian habitat burnt. 17.01.2022 How do you connect with nature? Is it an important part of who you are? DELWP and the Arthur Rylah Institute are conducting a survey in collaboration with Monash University to understand how we, as Victorians, can better connect and act for nature together. The results will help guide what we need to do, and how, to increase our capacity to protect biodiversity together as Victorians. It only takes 5 minutes to complete and is open to all Victorians over 18 years. Why not go and grab yourself a cup of tea and take a look!

14.01.2022 Have you seen this plant? Fireweed is a pretty yet poisonous flowering weed. It invades pastures (often found in bare or disturbed patches of ground), can grow on most soil types and if not controlled it can cause rapid infestation. It seeds prolifically, grows to maturity quickly and can cause liver damage or death if consumed by livestock. Were sure youll agree - its a nasty weed!! Fireweed has daisy like yellow flowers (commonly with 13 petals) and bright green st...aggered, serrated leaves. It can vary greatly in size and shape depending on environmental conditions and can can look very similar to some native species. Small patches have been confirmed in Clifton Creek, particularly along Deptford road, with plants beginning to flower now. These photos were taken just last week. If you live in the area and think you may have this plant growing, please contact us or your local Landcare group and we will come and check it out for you. Agriculture Victoria

13.01.2022 Maintaining social contact has been vital in this challenging year, so when Glenaladale Landcare Group decided to arrange a group gathering, an outing to the 'ghost town' of Mitchelldale for a barbeque and walk around the old historical area provided the ideal venue! After an early encounter with a brown snake, the group wandered around discussing the history of the area and local flora and fauna. Of particular interest was a Pardolote nest in the riverbank and the old orchard first planted in the 1890s. The pictures are of Mitchelldale Post Office c.1885 and the Glenaladale Landcare Group in 2020

13.01.2022 The Friends of Beware Reef were amazed at the diversity of life within the Gippsland Lakes and we completely agree that the Lakes are indeed a special place. 04.01.2022 We would like to extend congratulations to our very own EGLN Facilitator, Erin, who has recently become a recipient of the 2020 Wettenhall Environmental Trust Leadership Development Grant. These grants look to provide support to people playing a key role in conservation projects (particularly those involved in grassroots landscape restoration), to undertake professional development in their field. Erin certainly plays a key role in East Gippsland! In 2019, Erin was the dri...ving force behind our successful Lungs of the Lake project proposal which has since received funding from three different philanthropic investors to secure improvements to water entering the outstanding Gippsland Lakes complex. Erins bubbly personality and get things done attitude have made her successful in establishing partnerships with a range of community and environmental groups that will enhance our area for future generations as Im sure many of you can confirm.
