25.01.2022 Ever wondered why Physios ask about your spine when you have arm or leg pain? The reason is referred pain. Checkout the dermatome chart to see where different levels of the spine can innervate the skin.... Making things more complex, you can have pain in the leg that is coming from your lower back, without even feeling any issues in the lower back!



24.01.2022 Heres an interesting concept! Discs indeed do NOT slip. Negative descriptions and visualisations about certain phrases can heighten overall pain and sensitivity to pain.... Some imaging reports will often say a disc bulge but, what does this mean to you? It might not be as bad as you think... Always ask your physio about what certain diagnoses mean in relation to your condition and functional capacity!

12.01.2022 Lateral hip pain and inability to get a comfortable nights sleep is a common relationship we see in the clinic See the picture below from a great article on how you might be able to alleviate your hip pain at night (also useful for lower back pain!) NOTE: 1st picture shows high compressive load on hip = what you should avoid.... It's also important to see your physiotherapist if you're experiencing lateral hip pain... Other differential diagnoses to consider are varied an include lumbar spine referral, hip joint pathology and inflammatory conditions (Grimaldi & Fearon 2015)

08.01.2022 Greater trochanter pain syndrome (GTPS) This condition is a mouthful to say but in simple terms, it refers to lateral hip pain! Some common symptoms include pain on the outside of the hip and sometimes the thigh, pain lying on the affected side and pain with weight-bearing activities ... It is important to get this checked to get treatment started straight away. In some cases, cortisone injection may be required if symptoms are severe! Chat to one of the physios if you think you're suffering from GTPS!

Generally, minimally invasive surgery involves an anterior approach to help spare muscle which means improved/faster recovery.... But how would you know if you need one? 01.01.2022 The high ankle sprain AKA syndesmosis injury Seemed to be a common issue in the AFL this year! This injury happens when the foot is caught underneath a player getting tackled.... Anatomically, in severe cases this causes the two leg bones (tibia and fibula) to widen in weight bearing causing pain and instability! This is important to get assessed so that rehabilitation can begin. This injury can sometimes mean surgery!
