17.01.2022 In order to sell their products, food manufacturers may overinflate an aspect of their product. A food product may be sold on the premise it has 'no-fat' or labeled as 'high in protein'. In essence, it is accentuating an aspect of the product, idolizing certain macros/demonizing other macros in an effort to raise the perceived health status of a product. When we idolize/demonize certain macros we are labeling certain macros as 'good' or 'bad' and in turn, we are makin...g sweeping statements about a food as 'good' or 'bad', as 'healthy' or 'unhealthy, as 'toxic' or 'anti-inflammatory.' However, these claims, on their own, are not a reflection of how we eat. Food in isolation cannot be judged as 'healthy' or 'unhealthy'. To do so is misleading, judgemental and un-just. When we portray food as a macronutrient, a photochemical or a substance, it too is misleading and doesnt do justice to the food. We do this when we refer to bread as "carbs", or a piece of meat as "protein". It would be like calling oranges "acid", or cucumbers "water". The labels which WE give food can be as much a problem as some of the claims on foods. They too, are not calling it, as it is. Food is not to be idolized or demonized based on its content of macros. No macro is superior to another. Having a healthy relationship with food involves not placing some macros on a higher pedestal than others. Weight based compliments are a reflection of diet culture values. . Weight is not a compliment. . Complimenting someone on their weight might be common in diet culture but that doesnt make it okay. . The truth is- weight based compliments are harmful. In my stories yesterday I asked how many people had been harmed by weight based compliments and the answer was (so far) 96%. . It can cause physical harm, but it can also cause long-standing psychological harm. We wouldn't want our children to be victims of bullying. Neither would we want them to be perpetrators of bullying. And yet, we may unconsciously bully ourselves. We allow ourselves to repeatedly listen to our own negat...ive thoughts: "I hate my -, I'm too fat, I look disgusting". It is essentially, bullying. 06.01.2022 Friday Feast: Red cabbage and bean sprout salad. 1/4 whole red cabbage 250g bag bean sprouts 1 bunch coriander... few pinches of pickled ginger 6 tablespoons sesame seeds Finely slice the red cabbage. Place in a large bowl. Add the washed and strained bean sprouts. Remove the coriander leaves from the coriander stalks and add to the bowl. Make a dressing using 2 tsp sugar, 1/2 tsp salt, 3Tb vinegar, 2 Tb olive oil. Drizzle over the ingredients in the salad bowl and mix well. Distribute the pickled ginger over the salad.
