19.01.2022 From developing the Olympic flame to bike parts and helmets, Associate Professor Richard Kelso from our School of Mechanical Engineering has been instrumental in bringing the University of Adelaide to the world stage, in not just one, but five Olympic Games. And our students are coming along for the ride. Richard and his team played a key role in the final bike developed for Australia's 2020 Olympic cycling team. Working closely with Cycling Australia and bicycle manufacturer Argon 18, the University engineers helped design the 2020 frame, and selected the wheels and shoes, all of which required testing in the University's wind tunnel. After two (mostly) sunny days, our university rover teams competed across four challenges while entertaining spectators for the top spot at the inaugural Australian Rover Challenge at the University of Adelaide’s North Terrace campus. 1st place - Monash University 2nd place RMIT... 3rd place The University of Adelaide We also asked each team to select their Most Valuable Team member this award recognises the individual’s contribution to the team and going over and above to help the team during the lead up to and during the competition. 12.01.2022 The Minister for Education, The Hon Dan Trehan recently announced new grant outcomes under the Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) scheme. The University of Adelaide submitted 38 Future Fellowships proposals and received funding for 4 awards (totalling $1,674,218), with 2 in ECMS, giving the University a success rate of 10.5%. The University of Adelaide is placed equal 9th nationally (and equal 7th of Go8) for the number of DECRA awards received this year. Congratulations to Yujie Chen from our School of Mechanical Engineering and Dr. Xiaoguang Duan from our School of Chemical Engineering and Advanced Materials who were successful in receiving awards. Justyce Manton, is a first year student undertaking an internship at Defence SA while studying at The University of Adelaide. In 2018, Justyce attended our inaugural Santos Karnkanthi Indigenous Engineering Camp. Wirltu Yarlu Aboriginal Education at the University of Adelaide, in partnership with Santos, run an Engineering School for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Is...lander high school students in Years 11 and 12. Justyce is revelling in the chance to understand the industry better, and now has dreams of becoming the first Indigenous Australian to travel into space. Congratulations to the four ECMS researchers for successfully securing ARC funding totalling nearly $1.8m for their 2021 discovery proposals. Dr. Yuval Yarom from the School of Computer Science, Professor Martin Lambert and A/Prof Alex Ng from the School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering and Dr. Lewis Mitchel from the School of Mathematical Sciences. ARC Discovery projects offers funding for research projects undertaken by research teams or individual researchers. The scheme objectives are to support excellent basic and applied research training by individuals and teams, support national and international research collaboration and enhance the scale and focus of research in Australian government priority areas. 07.01.2022 Our microgravity and space radiation investigations, evaluating pharmaceutical stability, are the first science payloads to be sent by the university to the ISS. The investigation will be conducted inside and outside the ISS National Laboratory in two separately owned and operated research facilities, said the University of Adelaide’s Professor Volker Hessel, Research Director of the Centre for Sustainable Planetary and Space Resources and Professor in the School of Chemical Engineering and Advanced Materials. The University of Adelaide is studying how exposure to microgravity and space radiation affects the stability of pharmaceutical tablet formulations. Space research is one of the key industry engagement priorities as set out in the university's strategic plan Future Making.

07.01.2022 Remote Chinese students flew drones in the ECMS laboratory! With foreign students still unable to enter the country, the ECMS Specialist IT team have continued to provide support to enable remote access to practical lab sessions. Students still in China participated in autonomous systems laboratory sessions, flying mini drones remotely. The 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) is a national competition that challenges Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students to effectively explain their research to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes.
