25.01.2022 We were inspired by brilliant wildlife illustrator, Mike Bamford, in our nature drawing workshop on Sunday, to create our own sketches of local wildlife. Starting a drawing can be intimidating at times, but with some simple techniques and tricks anyone can give it a go. There was a nice mixture of skills in the class from absolute beginners to a few more advanced students. We had a gourmet spread of plant-based snacks and native bush teas to graze on for the artists We will be hosting more of these workshops because we LOVE them and they are very popular :-) : Clare Courtauld

18.01.2022 We have been buzzy making native bee hotels with researcher Kit Prendergast and The Fremantle Industrial Arts Quarter! As part of the series Your Home is a Habitat, we have helped to deliver one community workshop and have visited the kids at Beaconsfield Primary School :-) (We are visiting more schools in Freo this month!) We learnt about some of the ways that we can help native bees in Western Australia by:... Retaining native remnant vegetation Leaving some bare patches of soil in our gardens for ground dwelling bees Planting a diverse range of natives in suburbia Understanding that honey bees are an introduced species (and can have a negative impact on local wildlife such as cockatoos and birds in hollows) Reducing our intake of meat and diary products (animal agriculture is responsible for a massive amount of land clearing worldwide and is one of the leading causes of deforestation and biodiversity loss) Avoiding herbicides and pesticides We helped native bees by creating 150 native bee hotels, which patrons and students took home with them for their gardens Thank you everyone for your support and enthusiasm! For more on native bees check out: https://www.facebook.com/groups/Beesintheburbs Our next workshop is on microbats on Saturday 26th September: https://www.facebook.com/events/2728737367383616

18.01.2022 We had a delightful Sunday afternoon doing nature sketching with some of the lovely volunteers at Kanyana Wildlife Centre. A great way to relax, connect, and learn some new skills. Nothing will stop you being creative so effectively as the fear of making a mistake. Thanks John Clease for this quote. How very true. We all make lots of mistake when we sketch and create- but this is all part of the process. All drawings and paintings go through an ugly stage!... We had some resident blue tongued lizards’ model for the session. Check out the final drawings made by the ladies Wow

17.01.2022 It was great being back to school last week after a long break from schools for us due to Covid. The Year 2's at St Simon Peter Catholic Primary school loved meeting all of our friendly critters and learning how to draw them. Drawing flora and fauna is a great way to help children to focus, relax, and notice all the beautiful small details on creatures.

17.01.2022 We are facilitating a native bee workshop with the Fremantle Industrial Arts Quarter next month. This workshop will be led by brilliant bee researcher Kit Prendergast . Learn how your back garden is a habitat for local native bees and how to best support them. You will make your own bee hotel to take home with you too! We only have 50 spots available, so book your ticket early to avoid missing out . ... https://www.facebook.com/events/3435983836453380/

01.01.2022 Today Miss Beetle and Miss Flower entertained and educated pre-primary students all about invertebrates! The students learn how vital critters such as worms, native bees, and even cockroaches are for the ecosystem to be in balance. Every creature has its own unique role to play. The students met our friendly critters up close and made their own native bee hotel to take home.
