17.01.2022 Dutch trends forecaster Li Edelkoort has a provocative outlook on Covid-19: The virus will slow down everything, Edelkoort notes. We will see an arrest in the making of consumer goods. That is terrible and wonderful because we need to stop producing at such a pace. We need to change our behavior to save the environment. It’s almost as if the virus is an amazing grace for the planet."
16.01.2022 Termed as ‘fast fashion’, the demand for the latest look that is fast and cheap is taking its toll on the environment. Using up natural resources and mindlessly throwing toxins and chemicals into the water, air and soil we are wreaking havoc on the environment. In addition, 2/3 of clothing is made from synthetic fabrics like polyester, acrylic and nylon. These types of fabrics are made from crude oil (a fossil fuel) which are not good for the environment. According to Greyis...hGreen, here are some staggering facts about the apparel industry. 2.5 trillion pounds of used clothing are dumped into landfills every year. 2 million metric tons of CO2 emissions are produced on an annual basis, second only to the oil industry Fashion accounts for 10 % of the world’s carbon footprint. 70 - 100 million trees are cut down each year to make rayon and modal cellulose fabric The volume of water consumed to produce clothing is 70 billion cubic meters and will increase by 50% by 2030 According to the Sustainable Fashion Academy, the negative effects of the apparel industry include: climate change, reducing resources, affecting animals and their welfare, water usage and pollution, air pollution, food insecurity, habitat destruction and human right abuses. In a world where fashion excess and hyper consumption dominate the scene, Eco Fashion Week Australia (EFWA) launched in 2017 and quickly became the largest eco fashion week in the world in terms of length, number of eco designers and events which were powered by local community and volunteers. We are delighted to be back in 2021, with dates and locations announced soon. Please visit us at: www.ecofashionweekaustralia.com
