19.01.2022 In honour of Keep Australia Beautiful Week and to help us avoid, reduce and reuse, heres 10 fun ways to reuse products and packaging around the home, thanks to Planet Arc. 1. CDS. Old CDs make great coasters! Just stick two together and paste felt underneath if necessary. 2. LIPSTICK. Melt the remains of a lipstick together with a small pot of lip balm to make a great lip gloss.... 3. FOOD SCRAPS. Get yourself a worm farm and feed it all of your food scraps. One kilogram of worms can eat and recycle one kilogram of food every day, giving you nutritious worm castings for your plants and vegies. 4. MILK CARTON. Open up the bottom of a used milk carton and plant a tree seedling inside it. The carton will protect your seedling from weather and pests, and when planted it will degrade as the tree grows. 5. CORKS. Save your corks in a jar on the window ledge. They can be used as a stamp when painting, or you could even make your own cork noticeboard by gluing them to a plank or corflute. 6. NEWSPAPER. Make your own gift wrap! Wrap your presents in the comic pages from your local Sunday newspaper, magazines or comics. Kids (and even adults) love it! 7. WET WIPES. Old wet-wipe containers make great string dispensers. 8. BRANCHES. Collect branches from the garden to make a Christmas tree. Have a fun time arranging them in a vase or pot and then hang on the decorations! 9. BREAD BAGS. Save bread bags and other food or newspaper bags to take as doggie-doo bags when walking the dog. 10. CLOTHES. Got some old clothes or furniture that you dont want anymore? There are plenty of charity shops that do want them, so why not donate your unwanted items to your local op shop? Search RecyclingNearYou.com.au to find your local shop. Photo credit - Kevin Dooley

12.01.2022 With 30 MILLION toothbrushes thrown out every year - thats around 1000 tonnes of non-biodegradable material which can take up to 400 YEARS to decompose! - theres never been a better time to minimise plastic waste and switch to a bamboo toothbrush. Here are three other benefits of switching to a bamboo toothbrush: 1 - Less plastic in the sea. Currently, plastic toothbrushes are one of the most common items found on beaches worldwide. The rate of plastic entering our oceans ...is a terrifying 1 truck load every minute. 2 - As the bamboo toothbrush is mostly created from one of the worlds most renewable resources, switching to bamboo means youre supporting sustainability. 3 - Bamboo toothbrushes come in biodegradable packaging, which is a win for the environment. Theres never been a better time to make the switch! We have over 12 varities of bamboo toothbrushes for both adults and kids. Visit goecolateral.com.au or come in to one of our three locations - Magill, Blackwood or Brighton. 09.01.2022 Today is World Bamboo Day! And the spotlight is on the worlds most sustainable material - bamboo. Here are some bamboo facts: Bamboo is the FASTEST growing land plant in the world... the only thing that grows quicker is giant sea kelp in the ocean!... Bamboo is a giant grass! It is not a tree. Bamboo grows with shallow grass like roots (just like lawn), they just grow hard woody culms instead! There are over 1,500 species of bamboo in the world! Australia has around 400 and we specialise in the top 50 species that suit home gardens the best! (And pandas only eat 42 species out of 1,500!) Bamboo plants do not require fertiliser, pesticide or herbicide. Bamboo draws natural nitrogen from the soil and does not add any chemicals to the soil. Bamboo is extremely useful. Bamboo plants can be used for making paper, flooring, charcoal, building materials etc. Every part of bamboo can be utilised. Bamboo produces 30% more oxygen into the atmosphere and absorbs more carbon dioxide than trees, which means that each and every bamboo shoot is doing its part to combat climate change. Ecolateral is proud to stock a wide range of bamboo products - from toothbrushes to nappies! And good news, we are now stocking @ecoriginals bamboo nappies, so come in store today! Available at Ecolateral Magill, Brighton and online. 09.01.2022 From toilet paper to tea tree oil and every carefully curated product in between, did you know the products we stock are selected to ensure they strictly support the sustainable use of our earths resources while possessing quality and style for todays modern living? When it comes to choosing products, we ask: * Is it cruelty free/vegan?... * Is it sustainably sourced? * Does it come with zero waste packaging? eg. no (or limited plastic), glass, bamboo, cardboard, metal * Is it locally sourced? If not, what is the country of origin and how far does it have to travel to get to us? * Is it ethically made? * Is it interesting and/or unique? * Is it reusable, and will it replace single use items? * Is it beneficial for the environment? * Is it made from recycled materials? * Can it be easily recycled? * Does the manufacturer/supplier have an environmental policy? * Does the supply chain have a low environmental impact? 07.01.2022 In honour of Keep Australia Beautiful, weve devised 5 simple swaps to create less waste: 1. SUPERMARKET SPECIALTY STORES Want to be more mindful of what you are buying? Want to reduce waste and save money? Then instead of visiting a supermarket for ingredients and cleaning products, take your own jars and bags to your local bulk food store, or containers to Ecolateral and fill up with one reuseable container!... 2. DISPOSABLE COFFEE CUP REUSABLE COFFEE CUP Dont be that person who orders coffee in a takeaway cup, sip it and then bin it which then takes (thousands) of years to break down. Food bags are handy for storing food items in the fridge, smoothie prep in the freezer and for bread rolls, sandwiches and snacks like popcorn. 4. PLASTIC STRAWS METAL STRAWS With over 500 million plastic straws being used a day which ultimately ruin oceans and kills ocean wildlife straws are small but deadly. Unless its a metal straw! If you have to use a straw, then metal straws are the way to go. 5. PLASTIC TAKEAWAY CUTLERY BYO CUTLERY Plastic take away cutlery is another single use plastic perpetrator. Luckily theres cute BYO cutlery sets on the market like Retro Kitchen Carry Your Cutlery sets which come in their own uniquely designed tin, and includes a fork, knife, spoon, chopsticks, drinking straw and straw cleaning brush.
