17.01.2022 On the 20th May 2019, the University of Exeter declared a climate emergency in a bid to show full support of the academic evidence of climate change, and commitment to the change needed to mitigate climate change and its effects. On Friday 15th November 2019, a Climate Emergency Engagement Session was held on Penryn Campus, to discuss the Environment and Climate Emergency Working Group White Paper commissioned by the Vice Chancellor’s Executive Group. ECO Penryn attended thi...s session and spoke to Managing Director Tony Sanders, check out our last Facebook post to see what went on and access the white paper here: http://ex.ac.uk/bPe This summer, Falmouth Exeter Plus launched Our Effect, as part of their sustainability plans. #oureffect showcases some of the sustainable changes made around campus, such as: giving away free, used coffee granules from the Stannary for compost, and providing linen bags to be purchased cheaply at the Campus Shop, as well as showing some of the actions that individuals can take, for example, buying cans instead plastic bottles for drinks. The Our Effect logo is a butterfly composed of individual icons representing the different areas of sustainability that FX Plus tackle, whilst relating to the UN Sustainability Goals. Biodiversity, life on land and below water, climate action, communication and health and wellbeing are all represented in the 28 icons of the butterfly. Add to #OurEffect on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook and post about your sustainable actions! Want to get more involved in campus sustainability? Look up the Green Council! The Green Council involves students and staff in making decisions on sustainability and green plans on Penryn Campus.

04.01.2022 Article of the week: Winchester University proposes to plant 1,000 native trees as part of its pledge for a sustainable future. The university is partnering with Rising Forests to create an on-site woodland for wildlife habitat and to reduce its carbon footprint. They plan to plant oaks, willows, beeches and pines by the end of the year. The vice-chancellor said: We wanted to give our graduates a meaningful gift this year. These trees are symbolic of how the university has ...supported students to grow into the successful graduates we see today. The planting of the trees aims to combat global climate warming one tree at a time. There are currently projects such as this occurring across the UK in locations including Cornwall, Norfolk, Snowdonia and Shropshire. The UK has one of the lowest levels of forest cover throughout Europe which needs to be much higher to reverse climatic disaster and destruction. This project will be vital for carbon sink expansion and biodiversity growth. Click the link below to read the full article. https://www.hampshirechronicle.co.uk//17999280.winchester/
