17.01.2022 Pet of the month is Missy! Dog Friendly: Yes Cat Friendly: Untested Child Friendly: Yes... House Trained Yes Energy Level: Medium/High Fencing: 6ft Minimum Meet Missy, She is a gorgeous girl with a beautiful nature. She plays happily with her foster families with two young children. She has warmed the most to the youngest and obeys his commands. Missy is still a little shy of adults, especially if they are standing. She doesn't mind sleeping outside in a dog house and really likes a cuddle and rub. She loves being part of what you are doing and would likely be best suited to a family that is home alot or she has company with other pets when you are not at home. If you would like to meet Missy, please contact email [email protected] North Qld Animal Rescue Inc.

10.01.2022 Heartworm Alert Everyone meet Rippa , our patient of the week! Rippa like many dogs at the moment, is currently undergoing treatment for heartworm. He has spent a bit of time with us lately making sure his condition is managed and so far his treatment is going well . ... We are seeing a huge increase in heartworm cases lately so now is the time to make sure your pet is protected! What is heartworm you may ask? Heartworm is a parasitic worm that can infect your pet through a mosquito bite. An infected mosquito injects a larval stage of the worm under your pet’s skin. These larvae mature in the pet’s organs for approximately six months, traveling through the organs to the heart and blood vessels of the lungs. These adult worms then breed to produce microfilaria (baby heartworm) in the bloodstream which is drawn up by a mosquito when it feeds on the pet, continuing the cycle once again. Not all of our heartworm diagnosis are dogs displaying symptoms. A lot of cases are people simply coming in to get their dogs tested and heartworm prevention brought up to date, only to be told the heartbreaking news your dog has heartworm. Some symptoms you may find your dog display are; Dry and persistent cough Lack of stamina when exercising Weight loss Listlessness or weakness We live in FNQ, mosquitos are hard to keep out of both the yard and house, so even your indoor-only pals are at risk. If you would like to get your pal up to date with appropriate prevention please phone the clinic to talk to one of the friendly nurses to book an appointment

09.01.2022 Food glorious food! It’s simply my most favourite thing in the whole wide world apart from being with you my human. But I just can’t handle as many calories as I use too, and the extra weight makes it harder for me to get around. OBESITY is one of the main health issues for older dogs. Weight gain can cause many health issues and one of those is ... Osteoarthritis. Not only does the extra weight put pressure on the joints, the adipose cells in fat have been proven to increase inflammation within the joint. Inflammation causes degeneration of cartilage cells which then leads to a more severe onset of Osteoarthritis. Dogs that are over-weight are far more predisposed to an early onset of Osteoarthritis, Heart Disease, Diabetes and Liver Issuesjust to mention a few. The reason older dogs tend to become obese is not only because their energy level and activity decreases but also because their daily calorie needs shift. Their bodies just can’t burn calories the same way as when they were younger. So over time they gain weight. You may find it’s time to make a diet change more suited to senior dogs, which have fewer calories, more fiber and protein and less fat and carbs. Minimise treats that your doggo gets throughout the day and if you are playing games for mental stimulation for your dog, ensure that this portion of food is included in your dog’s daily food intake. Check out any other potential food sources like other family members sneaking little snacks and treats and if in a multi animal household your older pooch could be nicking food from his pack! Give us a call at the clinic to discuss dietary changes and options to help point you in the right direction. Also keep an eye out next week for your chance to WIN great p[prize for your senior pet in our up and coming competition!

09.01.2022 Happy International Dog Day! To celebrate we would love for you to share a picture of your loved canine pals in the comments below

07.01.2022 Pet of the month this month is Peyton! Peyton | Male | Mastiff X | 10 Months **Only available for adoption in Far North QLD**... Dog Friendly: Yes Cat Friendly: Untested Child Friendly: Yes House Trained: Yes Current Size: 30kgs More Photos: https://www.savour-life.com.au/adop.../search-now/view/25125 Hi my name is Payton! I’m a goofy handsome pup who loves pats and cannot get enough of people. I can follow some basic commands like sit and shake but I will need someone that will take the time to teach me some boundaries and how to walk on the lead as I am very strong and get excited and just want to explore everything! I live with a 1 year old child who I already love very much but I don’t understand why she can’t play rough and run with me so I would better suited to a home that has older kids. I am such a friendly boy and have a huge heart with lots of love to give. **Please note Peyton has some muscular issues with his back legs. He has been x-rayed and no issues with his joints currently, but it is possible that joint issues could develop overtime. Right now he is not in any pain and still very playful, but it will be important that his adopter doesn’t over exercise him and keeps him at a healthy weight** Peyton is $300 to adopt, desexed, microchip, C5 vaccinated and given flea, tick and worm preventatives. If you would like to meet Peyton, please contact email [email protected]. North Qld Animal Rescue Inc.

05.01.2022 PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT - Storm season is approaching and it is the perfect time to update microchip records, collar tags and to book health checks for medication refills. If your dog requires medications for storm phobias, it is required by law that they are seen to by a vet before a prescription medication can be dispensed for them. So if your pet is prone to escaping or gets scared during the storm season it is a good idea to be prepared... just like you would for a cyclone. If you have any questions about your pet and phobias, please contact the clinic and speak to one of the friendly staff for more information.

01.01.2022 Halloween is coming!! Gabby the clinic cat would like to remind you, that although halloween is fun for humans, it can be a bit scary for dogs and cats. The humans hoards of chocolates and lollies are bad for our furry friends. Chocolate toxicity is very serious for our pets and is classified as an emergency if consumed in any quantity. ... Many lollies contain sweeteners that can be toxic to both dogs and cats. If your pet was to consume any of these products, then a phone call or visit to your vet would be highly recommended. Remember! tiny humans like to stash and save lollies in their bedrooms and other places that dogs and cats can get into. So the kitchen pantry isn't the only place furry heads shouldn't get in to.
