25.01.2022 As many of you are aware, Ive started a new business called EDNAV (Education Navigation) that draws upon my experience as a teacher, school leader and parent to help families understand and resolve school-based issues. For example: child not happy or underperforming, teacher not open or responsive to student needs or social/behavioural issues being unresolved. I am loving running my own business but am particularly excited to be assisting parents and children achieve better ...outcomes when problems arise at school. Helping parents find the right school for their child is also very satisfying. With this arm of my business, Im a bit like a dating agency, using my experience to find the best match of child, parents and school for a long-term positive relationship. EDNAVs Facebook presence will be a place for information and conversation about school-based issues. I hope that it will be a useful resource for parents and educators committed to building positive professional relationships After EDNAVs soft launch earlier this year Im ready to dial it up another notch. As a FB friend, Id appreciate it if you could LIKE, FOLLOW or SHARE this EDNAV page to help me build my profile and reach. You may also like to look over the EDNAV website found at www.ednav.com.au Thanks for your support! Chris

22.01.2022 HOW A SPECIAL TEACHER MADE A DIFFERENCE I witnessed a powerful reminder of how special some teachers can be to students a couple of days ago. I was working in a local school with their Year 6 students. A guest speaker had been organised for a 1-hour session about resilience and had just concluded his presentation. A 13 year old boy approached the presenter with tears in his eyes, the man called his name in surprise and they hugged as the boy broke down further into sobs. The ...rest of us were taken aback by the emotion and power of this reunion. After a settling time and permission given by the boy to share their history with those remaining in the hall, their story was told. The boy had been at the same school as the guest speaker up until 3 years ago. The boy had arrived in Australia at the age of 6 with his mother and younger sister, with no English and very little of anything. The boy had been bullied and tormented at school and this teacher had spent a lot of time with him and his family trying to protect and improve his situation. It sounded like the teacher was his only friend. 3 years ago the boy changed school for a fresh start and the teacher did the same. This was the first time theyd seen each other since. Their story affected us all. I watched the boys friends give him hugs & comforting pats on the shoulder. I observed staff and children wipe away tears as their story unfolded. This was a powerful reminder of how a strong, positive student-teacher relationship can have lasting effects. Im sure that many teachers are unaware of how influential they are as they go about the everyday roles a teacher willingly takes on: carer, mediator, mentor, coach, disciplinarian, guide, example and advocate. For you teachers (and parents too), keep doing what you know you should do because IT DOES MATTER even if you dont hear about it at the time. Children need decent, caring adults around them, helping them learn about themselves and their world.

20.01.2022 TRANSITION TO A NEW YEAR LEVEL These simple tips for parents will help children transition more comfortably between year levels in primary school and from kindergarten to their foundation year at school. Parents have a big role to play in the transition process. KEEP THE TALK POSITIVE... When talking to children about their next step in formal schooling, highlight the positives. Your confidence in their future will reassure the child of good things to come. Invite conversation and questions from your child about school and frame these conversations in a positive light. FAMILIARISE Visit the buildings, playgrounds and other facilities the children will be using in the following school year. If possible, plan these visits in quiet times where the environment can be experienced without distraction. Ensure the route to school and meeting places are well known. BUILD RELATIONSHIPS Get to know the new/next teacher, the principal and other key staff. If there is not a formal transition process where this occurs, make appointments to facilitate this yourself. Familiar faces will be very comforting in the new school year. Organise or participate in play-dates with children sharing the same class or year level. Use part of the holiday period prior to the new school year to build friendships and relationships with peers. Involving parents too in these social times is good for everyone. Parents rely on each other for support. A strong network of parents will be of great benefit and comfort to the children. PREPARATION Ensure that books, uniform/clothing, stationery and administrative details are in place and in order well before Day #1. All schools need to have updated medical and contact details on file at the start of the year. Find out what you need to do to facilitate this. Break in the new school shoes, learn how to tie shoe laces and make sure all school clothing is clearly labelled with the childs name. Involve the child when shopping for lunch boxes, drink bottles and other personal items. Set up a comfortable morning routine. A good breakfast and stress free start to the day is always good preparation for whatever lies ahead. Set up the routines in the days leading up to the start of the new school year. Help your child learn to pack their bag, set out their clothes and schedule their time so that good habits are developed. Try to get all vaccinations, dentist check-ups and other health related appointments dealt with before school starts. Think of this as being like servicing your car before a big road trip. Your child is more likely to last the distance if they are in good shape at the start of the journey. *FOR THOSE CHILDREN STARTING SCHOOL: More in-depth and targeted tips can be found at the Victorian Governments Transition to School web page: http://www.education.vic.gov.au//Pa/supporttransition.aspx

18.01.2022 A nice article about the tutoring / teaching work I am doing with the fabulous kid cast of School of Rock The Musical. These talented kids rock it on stage and also in the classroom! The 36 children are aged between 9 and 13, come from 4 states and 34 different schools. Working with them is a challenge and a delight! #SchoolOfRockINT #ednav #goseeit

18.01.2022 HYPOTHETICALS #2 Your child comes home from school very upset about something the teacher said to them about their behaviour. Your child says they were not behaving badly and that the teacher always picks on me. When you approach the teacher about what was reported to you, the teacher totally refutes the childs interpretation of the situation. Next week, the situation is repeated. Accusation and denial again. Who do you believe? What will you do if this occurs again?

17.01.2022 How much better could a child's educational experience be if parents devoted as much time and professional attention to it as they do to maintaining and servicing the family car! https://www.ednav.com.au/kids-cars/

16.01.2022 Let 2019 be a year of wonder, friendships, learning, action, engagement and belonging for our children in schools. Best wishes to friends & clients of EDNAV for a wonderful year ahead.

15.01.2022 Many parents consider engaging a professional tutor when their child needs academic support. Are they necessary, what can they do and where do you get a good one? I've just posted an article about tutors on https://www.ednav.com.au/tutors-yes-no-sometimes/ to help parents with these questions.

13.01.2022 ASK, AND RECEIVE! Why do we challenge some institutions but not others? Many people happily ask questions of banks, insurance companies and communication providers but dont feel comfortable to approach a school. Have you ever asked an institution whether something can be improved and it immediately acts in your favour? Is this your best price? Can you throw in any extras? Is this the lowest interest rate? Although we may not ask these questions often enough, we know that the... response generally works to our benefit. Have you ever respectfully asked your childs school What else can be done to help my childs learning / social situation / engagement? In my experience as a teacher, principal and parent advisor most parents do not ask these questions often enough, if at all. Why not? THE BENEFITS I recently asked my mobile telephone provider to review my phone & data plan to see whether I was on the best contract for my needs. It had been 2 years since Id checked in and the monthly payments with phone and data use had become an accepted pattern of my financial life. It was a good plan, I paid without reservation and it met my needs. But when I asked the provider to assess whether there was a better plan for me, without hesitation I was upgraded to a new contract half the cost and with twice the benefits! Asking the question will save me nearly a thousand dollars over the next 12 months. Imagine if you went to your childs teacher or principal and asked whether anything else could be done to improve your childs situation at school and they responded with a resounding yes. Your child may benefit from a more personalised program, greater focus from staff on their needs, access to new resources, matching your child with the most compatible classroom teachers and a monitoring & feedback schedule to track progress. Whats the harm in asking? PREPARE Before you ask the question though, get your ideas and facts in place. Clarify with your child what they perceive their needs to be. Use formal reports to gauge how your childs learning and personal growth is tracking. Consider what your childs long-term and short-term needs are too. Reading the schools policies and curriculum outlines will inform you of how things should be before you ask what could be. Parents too have a vital role in the education of their child. If you are willing to ask questions of the school, be prepared to ask the same question of yourself and do not be surprised if the school suggests some things you can do to help your childs situation. Its a partnership after all and good partners challenge each other to be their best.

11.01.2022 Keys to a positive parent - teacher relationship? Communication, shared expectations, trust, respect, boundaries... Am interested in how you create positive, professional relationships with teachers. What works? https://www.ednav.com.au/positive-relationships-childs-tea/

10.01.2022 HYPOTHETICALS #3 Class lists for the following year have just been released. Your child has been placed in the class of a teacher youve heard negative reports about, but will be with all of their best friends. You are considering speaking to the principal about requesting a change of class to be with the teacher youve heard better reports about but they would not be with their friends any more. Do you pressure the principal for a change to get what you perceive to be a better teacher but separate your child from their friends if you succeed?

03.01.2022 HYPOTHETICALS #1 Your child always tries their hardest at school and likes to be involved in as much as possible. Over the course of the year they miss out on selection for a sports team, a role in the play, a leadership position, the advanced choir and being placed in a class with their best friends. Your childs confidence and enthusiasm is being challenged. So is your faith that this is the right school for your child. What do you tell them? What can you do as a parent?
