25.01.2022 Beautiful ride this evening chasing the setting sun. Just a local one but was a much needed break from the monotony. Feed the soul and ease the mind. I’ll have me some of that, thank you! @ Kangaroo Ground, Victoria

25.01.2022 Not long to go now until the competition over Visit Nillumbik expires, so go get your entry in!

25.01.2022 Yep, it sure is muddy out there folks . And I was staying on the main tracks and avoiding the singletrack... . . Nice to get a 50k+ ride in though, really blew away some cobwebs . Hopefully get a few more of these in during lockdown this time around.

23.01.2022 What a beautiful day for Father’s Day! Hope all the Dads out there managed to get out and enjoy it with their kids. Maybe even a bike ride?

23.01.2022 Last minute brake bleed for Alan from Eltham before his ride down Cascades at Lake Mountain today. Hope you had a great day! . . Must get up there myself again soon

21.01.2022 Busy Christmas Eve in the workshop! . . Wheel repairs, drivetrain renewals, tubeless conversions, bike builds... great to see so many people prioritising ride time this holiday! .... . And one lucky lad is going to be riding a sweet 2021 Polygon Siskiu D7! See more

20.01.2022 Wow busy times in the workshop! . . New bike builds, tubeless setups, gear tuneups, wheel truing, brake bleeding, hub rebuilds, suspension setups, new chains, gear cables, valves, tyres. Phew! .... . Lovin’ getting stuck into your bike servicing folks. Thanks for thinking of Elevate MTB! See more

20.01.2022 Well, first time for a race number on this bike. And what a race it was!. . . After an eight year hiatus, it was great to be between the tapes once again. The Odyssey was back to its original race format from Apollo Bay up to Forrest which lured me back in. Such an epic, and me being me, I had to challenge myself a bit more this time! .... . Well done to everyone who competed, it’s no mean feat and to finish is a badge if honour for sure . . For me, the only thing better than completing the race was the hug from my daughter when I crossed the line. Being a Dad is awesome See more

15.01.2022 Hang in there folks. . This lockdown will come to an end eventually. . In case that wasn’t challenging enough, add into the mix widespread power outages and instructions not to drink tap water... . A tree took out the power at our place for two days and since we don’t have gas, boiling water was a bit of a puzzle. . We are all totally over it aren’t we . But despite the wild weather, this weekend did show us a glimpse of Spring! Warm, sunny and, wait for it....dry trailswell mostly anyway! . . Getting out for a ride today was good for the soul. The fresh, optimistic air of Springtime reminded me that all this shall pass, and life will eventually go back to normal. . We just need to sit tight. @ Kangaroo Ground, Victoria See more

14.01.2022 Great to get out for a ride and clear the head this morning. I also cleared every one of the spider webs on the trail for you all. Mainly with my face. You’re welcome

14.01.2022 So when do you know it’s time to replace your bottom bracket? . . The bottom bracket is a curious phrase referring to the bearings in the frame that the axle or spindle of the cranks pass through and allow them to spin. .... . All bottom brackets have two sets of bearing races; one on either side of the bottom bracket shell. There are a few different ways that these bearings fit into the shell with the two most common being threaded (as in the pictures above) and push-fit. But how can you tell if they have had it? . . The most common tell-tale is a creak or noise from this part of the frame whilst peddling and particularly when stomping hard. It can be tricky to determine sometimes though as the noise can often echo through the frame and sound like it’s coming from anywhere! . . To isolate the noise from a possible creaking seatpost (another common source of noise!) try peddling whilst out of the saddle. If you still have it, there’s a good chance your BB could be stuffed. Before you write it off though, just check that the cranks are tight on the spindle/axle and your pedal bearings spin freely (other possible sources of pesky creaks) . . For one last test, drop the chain off the chainring, grab the cranks and try to push and pull them in/out from the frame in different crank positions. Often some play or grittiness can be felt in the bearings by doing this. This is a dead-set giveaway that they are shot! . . So why not check the bottom bracket next time you give your bike a tune up. They are easily the most loaded and worked bearings on the frame and to top it off, gets swamped with mud, grit and you-name-it, particularly through Winter! See more

13.01.2022 I know, I know. Your social feed is full of people getting out now that lockdown has eased. It really was very, very nice though . . . So great to catch up with the Sunday crew, most of which I haven’t seen in the last couple of months new bike bits, new gear....and new beards! but thankfully, the same old banter...good on yer guys, it was awesome to ride with y’all again @ Warrandyte, Victoria, Australia

13.01.2022 When 13 guys get together early on a wet and cold Sunday morning to go ride mountain bikes, it says a lot about passion and commitment to a sport don’t you think? . . . Absolute pleasure riding with you gentlemen as always @ Warrandyte, Victoria, Australia

12.01.2022 Wow, what a day! . . With lockdown restrictions going up a notch , I’m so glad I took the opportunity for an adventure today. I’m lucky enough to live in one of the largest Shires of metro Melbourne and today I thought that I would venture to the very edge and take a peek over the fence into neighbouring Yarra Ranges Shire (but not enter of course). Just fabulous weather - a real early taste of spring , so nice I got a bit carried away. Cue epic 55km round trip with... some 1600m climbing.... . . Might take the dually for this one next time (whenever that might be...) @ Christmas Hills, Victoria See more

12.01.2022 So when is a tyre worn out? . . No, the answer is not when the carcass is showing or when side knobs are breaking off but it’s probably sooner than you might think! .... . Tread depth is not necessarily a good indicator of tyre wear. The original tread depth on brand new tyres varies considerably depending upon the model and intended use. They are all grippy in their own application... . . However, all tyres take a nosedive in grip and performance when the sharp edges of the knobs wear off and become noticeably rounded. . . Usually the next step in deterioration is the side knobs becoming frayed and damaged. Many tyres have a softer compound of rubber at the sides of the tread which aid cornering grip but wears out more quickly. At this point, the tyre is a definite gonner... . . Of course the lifespan of the tyre is down to many factors, not least your usual terrain and how aggressively you ride, but these couple of signs are not bad indicators . . Swipe to see the old and new above! See more

10.01.2022 Time to treat the old workhorse to a new chainring! Single speed chainrings are getting hard to come by these days - no narrow-wide needed here! The stock no-brand ring is well and truly flogged (as you can see!) but it has done well given the beating it has had . I found this SS ring from Canadian brand Blackspire which I’m pretty excited about as I have found their gear to be pretty bombproof in the past . . . And the Pale Ale from Stomping Ground is pretty good too

10.01.2022 Rock Shox Deluxe in for a bit of TLC recently. Ready for a summer of sending it . . When did you last service your rear shock?

09.01.2022 Ah man! How nice is it out there right now?! . Thanks for the ride this morning guys!

08.01.2022 Ripper group ride at Buxton! . . Been far too long since I was here.. .... . Mental note to self - ride here more! . . Thanks for the ride guys See more

07.01.2022 Absolutely bloody loved it out there today! . . The trails were tip-top and the sun was shining What more do you need?

07.01.2022 Want a simple and (relatively) cheap way to boost your brakes? . . . Go up a rotor size! Keep your existing calipers, hoses, levers etc just as they are and fit a larger diameter rotor to the wheel. Rotors are generally now standard sizes at (diameter in mm) 140, 160, 180, 200 and if you are up for it, 220! I have changed a 160 to a 180 in the photo above. The differences in diameter might not seem like much, but trust me it makes a big difference to stopping power! .... . You will also need an appropriate brake mount adapter for the rotor size. This is fitted to the frame or fork before remounting the caliper. It moves the caliper out to the right spot so that the pads make contact with the rotor at the new diameter. Most frames and forks have a specified maximum rotor size, so bear this in mind when making the switchIn the photos above you can see there are two different types of adaptor. One for post mount and one for the older IS mount (side mount). . . But what if you have maxed out the rotor size but want a bit more? Well before you upgrade to higher spec brakes, consider Hope Floating Rotors (third pic). These things are awesome! I have been running them for a few years now and love the extra bite they provide. They also don’t seem to fade as much on long descents as they have better heat dissipation. They also make an awesome ‘ping’ noise when they are cooling down which tells your mates just how hard you were rocking that last downhill See more

07.01.2022 Saturday smiles with @fireroadprincess and @tia.unframed getting to grips with some bike handling techniques. . Their timing and coordination was much better than mine with the camera, ahem, as you can see! . Thanks for a great session guys!

07.01.2022 Absolute cracker of a morning! Bit fresh first thing (6deg!) but what a beautiful day to be out on the bike! . . Hope you managed to get out too?

05.01.2022 Wow, what a wet weekend we have had here in Melbourne! With trails underwater and pretty much non-stop rain, it was a good time to catch up on a few jobs in the workshop

05.01.2022 Awesome ride out this morning with the usual suspects... . . . Yer know, when you go riding in the bush sometimes you can come across some pretty weird things.... @ Warrandyte, Victoria, Australia

05.01.2022 Wow, absolute cracker of a day! . . Double the time meant double the fun for today’s (two) hours of power! .... . There were sooo many people out and about that I’m guessing you managed to get out today too? See more

05.01.2022 Just one hours worship at the dirt church might not seem worth it...a bit of faff getting your bike and gear ready, the wash down afterwards. Motivation can be pretty low. Once you actually get out there though, it’s so worth it! . . Make sure you get out. It’s good for you for a whole bunch of reasons @ Kangaroo Ground, Victoria

04.01.2022 After a blowy few days down here at Anglesea , it calmed right down today for a great rideBeen hanging out to explore some of the perhaps lesser known trails of the area. Also got the chance to ride at the Bike Park finally . . This area has so much to offer and is well worth the trip. I caught up with Carl, a local rider, who hinted that there are more plans for the future. Exciting stuff! .

04.01.2022 Short, sharp loop for the hour-of-power this morning. Too wet for the single track but the gravel roads and shared paths were nice to spin on for a change. Found a great skinny along the way was really, really slippery though! . . . Hope y’all doing OK during lockdown 4.0 and managing to get out and spin the cranks @ Kangaroo Ground, Victoria

04.01.2022 Forks and shocks coming in thick and fast for servicing ahead of the holiday season... . . Or should that be the sendy season!

04.01.2022 Well today’s ride was the result of wondering what happens when you join one regular ride to another - one big loop of awesomeness!. . . Still the odd boggy bit here and there but it’s definitely drying out heaps leaving smooth tacky ribbons of flowy goodness to enjoy . .... . Bit misty and murky again, but it makes for great atmospheric photos! @ Kangaroo Ground, Victoria See more

04.01.2022 Happy World Bicycle Day! . . There are a few people who claim credit for the invention of the bicycle and a German fella by the name of Baron Karl Von Drais apparently started it all off with a velocipede bike in 1818. Pedals only came 40 or so years later and brakes 30years after that (eek! ). .... . It’s been a story of continuous improvement and development since, and none more relentless and profound than in the last 20years I would say! . . Bikes mean different things to different people; a means of transport, independence, a way to make a living or find work, a freedom machine, fitness apparatus, a social facilitator, mental therapy. Whatever way, there’s no denying the humble bicycle has touched the lives of millions of people. . . So here’s to you Baron Karl. You will have had no idea what you created, but I for one am extremely grateful. Cheers See more

03.01.2022 Blue skies are on their way... . The COVID clouds are clearing and a beautiful Spring is here to enjoy . .... Make sure you get out for your hour, breathe in the air and smell the flowers See more

03.01.2022 Misty, murky Melbourne morning. And freezing cold too . Sooo nice to be out with the guys though and give the singlespeed a good thrashing. Certainly a good way to keep warm!

02.01.2022 Changeable weather on the ride this morning but was great to get out as always Thanks guys . . By riding to the start of the ride these days, I’m getting to stretch the legs a bit more too. Typically 45km round trip from home with 900+m of climbing .... . Feels great! See more
