15.01.2022 I've put together some resources about creating captions for Zoom and social media video. #AccessIsLove http://elgibbs.com.au/accessible-communications/... [Image description: Closed Caption symbol - two Cs in black on a white background.]

14.01.2022 Growing Up Disabled, the fantastic anthology of disabled writers, was going to be launched today, but due to the pandemic, everyone will have to wait till next year. My story is included, which is a more personal take than I usually write. I'm very excited for you all to read such great stories, and here from disabled people. In the meantime, you can pre-order the book her:... https://www.blackincbooks.com.au//growing-disabled-austral And you can read what some of the writers think, in this piece with the Growing Up Disabled editor, Carly Findlay OAM. https://www.artshub.com.au//how-disabled-artists-are-impac [Image description: Cover, with colourful drawing, of Growing Up Disabled in Australia book.]

12.01.2022 The Disability Royal Commission held hearings this week about people with intellectual disability and the health systems. I've written about what was said for Eureka Street. "I wondered a great deal, listening to all these stories, about what it will take for the medical profession to think of us as whole humans with rights, and loves, and thoughts and wishes and hopes, instead of atomised bits and pieces they can apply their expertise to. I wondered how they can see our disa...bled selves as having value, when they are taught with every lesson only to see us as broken." https://www.eurekastreet.com.au//disability-rc-reveals-imp [Image description: Person in a hospital bed with a tube in their hand.]

06.01.2022 Another big piece out today, this time on the NDIS, and in particular the Tune Review. I looked at what has been recommended, and talked with disabled people about what they wanted, and surprise, surprise, there is a huge gulf between the two. "Rights are very different from awareness. People can be aware all they like about disability, but that still doesn’t mean they understand that we have rights as disabled people. A right to live in the community, a right to support, a r...ight to make decisions, a right to work, a right to be equal. This difference is fundamental to how we are seen and treated by the NDIS." Many thanks to the disabled people who spoke to me, or gave me permission to use their stories. I particularly want to thank Pauline Vetuna, who interviewed many disabled people in December last year, and allowed me to use them in the essay. Go and have a listen/read on the 3CR Community Radio website. https://www.3cr.org.au/disabilityday2019 https://croakey.org/what-will-it-take-for-the-ndis-to-put-/ [Image description: Lights in the shape of a question mark, in one corner of a dark room, with painting on the walls.]

02.01.2022 The good folks at Croakey - independent, in-depth social journalism for health asked me to write about the Disability Royal Commission's report about the experiences of disabled people during COVID. The latest report from the Disability Royal Commission (DRC) makes clear what many disabled people already knew: we were invisible during the pandemic; overlooked, forgotten. It’s been an incredibly hard year for many of us, with the pandemic following on straight after the bushfi...res." https://www.croakey.org/invisible-overlooked-forgotten-dis/ [Image description: Close up of a virus.
