23.01.2022 I N T R O D U C T I O N . I thought it was only about time to introduce myself properly. . I'm Sarah, aka The Balancing Mum. ... . I'm a yogi, wife & mother of two beautiful children + a fur baby I have a Bachelor in Env Science & Diploma in Marine Science, hence my love for the ocean & being in nature . Specialising in pregnancy + postnatal yoga, I am passionate about helping fellow Mothers find a little more balance, peace & love for themselves. . Yoga has been a really powerful tool for me! Helping me feel like a woman again. I don't claim to have the perfect balance (is that even possible). I still have days or moments where I get angry, frustrated, exhausted or just burst into tears. But when these moments do pop up I look at them in a different light & know they don't define me. . With two young children & no family around I was finding life as a mum really hard. I kept thinking it would get easier as they got older, but it didn't for me. I was physically, emotionally & energetically drained & I just thought it was "normal" & tried to keep going. Something had to change so I very slowly got back into yoga. Sometimes one class a fortnight was all I could manage, but even that made me feel so good!! Very gradually (good things take time right) my practice became more consistent. . I slowly began to feel stronger, & not just physically. I was able to be more aware of myself emotionally + mentally, & finally listen to my body. What works & what might not be serving me, & ultimately strong enough to make any necessary changes. . With all of this I knew I had to do more than just practice yoga. I wanted to teach, guide, help women learn to feel & acknowledge whats going in & around our bodies. I have completed over 550 hours of training, including pre + postnatal yoga. I'm constantly reading, listening, studying... yoga practices, philosophy, ritual, anatomy, womens health, mental health... I can't get enough. . So here I am now, The Balancing Mum - Pregnancy + Postnatal Yoga. . Called to help women navigate ALL stages of motherhood. 22.01.2022 O P E N Y O U R H E A R T . . "It is said we have three hearts. Our physical heart, our emotional heart + our spiritual heart. We remove pain + suffering from being stored in our hearts when our innermost heart is unveiled to ourselves." .... . Through past experiences our heart (and hips) becomes a storage facility for emotions that we struggle to release. When the heart and heart space is open and free we can release these emotions and begin to feel more love. Love towards others and more importantly unconditional love towards ourselves. . . On a physical level, opening through the heart and thoracic cavity (chest and upper back) has many benefits. . The Breath - improving flexibly through the rib cage allows us to fully expand our lungs and breathe better. A longer deeper breath can help reduce anxiety, improve sleep quality, increase energy levels and aid in digestion. . Healthy Spine - practicing heart opening asana can create a healthier spine, improving bad posture and creating anatomical balance. As humans we forward fold more than any other movement, and particularly mothers (feeding, carrying children, pushing prams, washing, cleaning...) so to counteract the effects of this one-sided movement, and bring back some balance heart opening poses are a perfect option. . . There are many heart opening asana for all levels of yogis. From gently flowing through cat/cow, cobra or upwards facing dog, to poses like bridge or wheel. . . 16.01.2022 S I B L I N G S . . Anyone else facinated with sibling dynamics, particularly as their children get older? .... . My little bro and sis are 7 and 9 years younger than me, therefore we were always at very different stages growing up. So I find it really enjoyable, albeit frustrating at times, observing the interactions between my two babies. . . My daughter Milla certainly takes the motherly role quite seriously at times, bossing her bother around. Gosh she sounds like me . . Meanwhile Hunter is in that checky and often rebellious stage... that stage when any mother (or big sister in this case) is pulling her hair out one minute, and trying to not laugh at their comebacks or remarks the next . . 10.01.2022 S T R E N G T H . . Yoga has made me strong. Maybe the strongest I have ever been. But I'm not just talking about physical strength. ... . Mental, emotional and physical strength is all interconnected. . Strength isn't something that comes and goes. Strength is all about experiences. . Strength is believing in yourself - so passionately that you still face the situation at hand despite the fears and uncertainties. . Strength is an awareness of obstacles, but still being capable of whatever you set your mind to. . Strength is being ok with finding help or support from friends, family or other networks. . Being strong doesn't mean you'll never break down, cry, loose your shit. Being strong means allowing yourself to feel ALL the emotions. . For many people physical strength is all they know. And it may be hard to access help or resources to build strength mentally and emotionally. That was me! . But by increasing your physical strength, it can often allow you to see that you can do difficult things, which in turn makes you feel empowered. . 10.01.2022 "Sometimes in yoga I feel like a graceful swan. Other times I feel like a baby giraffe learning to walk." . . What ever you are feeling, allow yourself to really feel into it. Witness the feeling, acknowledge it and then release it.... . Don't judge yourself or knock yourself down for feeling a particular way. . . I often have days at home, with the kids or on my mat where I think "what the hell am I doing?" And all I want to do is collapse into a big mess. Then I close my eyes for a moment take some deep breaths, allow myself to soften, release and then pick up where I left off. . This may be a snapshot of a graceful moment. This asana builds stamina and helps strengthen through the entire lower body which is important not just during pregnancy, but also during labour and birth as these muscles help support the body during the surges (contractions). . With many variations on offer, and being able to customise with the use of props, it's also a perfect pose for all stages of pregnancy and postpartum. .... . Our hips are a keystone to your body and its proper functioning, particularly during pregnancy when the body changes so much. Open hips improves your posture, alignment and overall flexibility. . .
