13.01.2022 NAPLAN has once again been the talk of the day. It has been reported that NAPLAN has made no difference to the standard literacy and numeracy scores. Surprise, surprise!! As a teacher that has taught in both Year 3 and 5 classes (which sit NAPLAN tests) it is one big waste of time!! All it does is put unnecessary stress on young children. Having 9 year old children sit 4 different tests in exam conditions is absolutely ridiculous. Children aren't allows out of their seats, t...hey can't ask questions and need to be silent for up to 50 minutes. The complete opposite of what a classroom is like. Schools are pressured into obtaining high scores because these scores are accessible to the public which in turn can effect future enrolments. I have been in parent meetings where colleagues have convinced parents to sign exempt forms because they knew that that child would bring down the rest of the cohort's standard!! Teachers HATE NAPLAN! We spend 4 weeks prior to it to try and get students prepared for it. This time could be spent teaching purposeful lessons. As a new parent, I would not place any emphasis on it. I would encourage my son to try his best and that is all. And then when I would receive his results a few months later, I would look at and then bin it because it holds no relevance. Conclusions can't be drawn on one test on one day. So my advice is listen to your child's teacher and ask questions during parent/teacher interviews and read your child's report. You will gain much more valuable information then a NAPLAN report.
13.01.2022 This is a great resource loved by many primary teachers which helps teach your children the sounds of the alphabet through music https://youtu.be/A5QGYDhKhg4
10.01.2022 Today is the first day of remote learning 2.0 for our children in Melbourne. Below you’ll find some helpful hints to help you, your child and your family: 1. Stick to a routine. This includes wake up and going to sleep times, break times, etc. 2. Have a working space dedicated for your child. Ensure that the area isn’t cluttered and away from the busyness of the rest of your home. ... 3. If weather permits, go out for some physical activity each day. The board of education recommends at least 30 minutes each day. 4. Have some brain food for your child that they can munch on as working. This can include; fruit, cheese and yoghurt. 5. If you or your child are getting frustrated, walk a way and take a break!! Teachers are understanding. If you can’t finish the activity in the time allocated. That’s ok. The most important thing is that everyone’s wellbeing is in check. Because above all, that really is all the matters.
08.01.2022 As a parent I can understand the worries that some of you may have... My child isn’t learning... They’re going to be behind... How will they catch up? Will this effect them in the future?? ... These are all valid questions. However, nothing in this world can buy time. Never in our lifetime will we get this time back and soon enough we will all be reminiscing how nice it was to be able to take things a little slower, without being restricted by time - whether that’s getting to after school swimming, cramming homework in before dinner, etc. Enjoy this time with your families and just BE. As parents we are the people that our children look up to. Without even knowing, you are teaching them more than a classroom can teach
05.01.2022 With the new restrictions in place for some Melbourne suburbs. Below is a great clip from Play School that helps explain to children COVID-19. The main message is keep it simple and factual. https://m.facebook.com/ABCKidsCommunity/videos/203365794285386/
03.01.2022 Which child doesn’t LOVE bubbles??? Below you will find a great simple science experiment that children of any age can follow and experience success. You can even make home made bubble wands with some sticks or pipe cleaners. For older children you may like them to estimate the size of their biggest and smallest bubble. You could even discuss with them what the ingredient is in the recipe that helps make the bubbles so big!! For younger children, at the end of the bubble se...ssion you can have them draw a picture if their favourite bubble that they made. If you end up trialing this at home, I would love for you to share your photos. Enjoy https://www.redtedart.com/bubble-recipe/
