Anxiety Depression Drug/alcohol abuse Research suggests that often we put off seeking help for our suffering for years, even when we suspect that our suffering is probably not normal. We think, I can handle it, or Ill get over it. If someone asks us R U OK?, we are likely to stoically say, Yes, Im fine. Look in the mirror. Say to yourself R U OK?. The U isnt always out there. It isnt always other people. Its just as likely to be you and me. Because we are human. We are the statistics. Were all affected by life. Our mental health can be compromised by: the loss of loved ones (including suicice; 85% of the population is affected by suicide in some way) stress living in a complex world with work pressures and family commitments anxiety having to deal with difficult situations and events every day depression the heavy sadness that strikes us at times and doesnt seem to go away plus all the rest that comes with being human. Lets get selfish about looking after our own mental health first. Lets put our own oxygen masks on first before trying to help others. We cant help others if we are dealing with our own internal struggles. You cant pour from an empty cup. (Anonymous) Some suggested first steps: 1. Be compassionate with yourself 2. Take time to reflect on what is going on in your life 3. Begin a program of self-care 4. Talk to a trusted other 5. Seek help from a professional if you feel bad Look in the mirror and ask yourself R U OK?.
